  • The characteristics of fretting wear are reviewed. Fretting damage depends on slip amplitude and classified into three groups: (1) an annular damage according to Mindlin's analysis at microslip region, (2) strong adhesive deformation without loose wear particles at the intermediate region, and (3) formation of fine oxide particles at the gross slip region. The critical slip amplitude of fretting is the boundary between (2) and (3). The boundary slip amplitude depends on normal load. The wear rate increases and saturates with increasing slip amplitude. But it is constant by considering the critical amplitude. The role of oxide particles are discussed. Three different actions are noted: accelerating wear, preventing wear and insignificant effect. The oxide shows two opposing effect depends on normal load and slip amplitude. This is related to the removal rate from the interface (abrasive action) and compaction rate at the interface to form a protective layer. The effect of oxidation is significant to determine the wear and friction. The diffusion of oxygen is restricted at the small amplitude. As a result, crack formation at the boundary is a predominant damage, related to fretting fatigue damage.

  • In this study, a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes simulation around Wido Island was performed to analyze the wake effect behind an island. A 10 m/s wind speed and pressure boundary conditions were assigned for the inflow and outflow boundary conditions, respectively. Wido Island was modeled using GIS data. A prevailing wind from the north-northwest direction was determined based on QuikSCAT satellite data. A computational domain of $40km{\times}20km{\times}5km$ covering Wido Island was applied for numerical analysis. Sixty points were specified to extract the wind speed data. A wind speed profile inside the atmospheric boundary layer was compared with a wind profile using a simple power law. It turns out that the wake effect decreases the mean wind speed by 5% more or less, which corresponds to a 14% decrease in wind energy. Thus, the installation of a meteorological mast or development of a wind farm behind Wido Island is not highly recommended.

  • We consider. a horizontal static liquid layer on a planar solid boundary. The layer is evaporating when the plate is heated. Vapor recoil and thermo-capillary are discussed along with the effect of mass loss and vapor convection due to evaporating liquid and non-equilibrium thermodynamic effects. These coupled systems of equations are reduced to a single evolution equation for the local thickness of the liquid layer by using a long-wave asymptotics. The partial differential equation is solved numerically.

  • A median-density fluid was injected into the upper layer of a two-layered fluid in a rotating cylindrical container. Several sets of the top and bottom boundary configurations were employed and the flow pattern of each layer including the injected fluid was observed to determine the factors that affect the path of the injected intermediate fluid. The axisymmetric path of the intermediate fluid when the upper layer had a free surface, changed into the asymmetric path with bulged-shape radial spreading whenever either the upper layer or the lower layer had ${\beta}$-effect. The internal Fronds number that controls the shape of the interface turned out to be the most important parameter that determines the radial spreading in terms of location and strength. When the upper and lower layer had the ${\beta}$-effect, convective overturning produced anticyclonic vortices at the frontal edge of the intermediate fluid, and that could enhance the vertical mixing of different density fluids. The intermediate fluid did not produce any topographic effect on the upper-layer motion during its spreading over the interface, since its thickness was very small. However, its anticyclonic motion within the bulged-shape produced a cyclonic motion in the lower layer just beneath the bulge.

  • Effeccs of porous wind fence on surface-pressure around 2-dimensional prism model of triangular cross-section were investigated experimentally. The pressure data were obtained at a Reynolds number based on the model height of Re=2.1*10$^{5}$ . Flow visualization also carried out to investigate the flow structure qualitatively. The mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles measured at fence location were well fitted to the neutral atmospheric surface boundary layer over the open terrain. Various fences with different porosity and height were tested to investigate their effects on the surface pressure acting on a prism model at different locations. As the results, porous fence with porosity 40 ~ 50% is most effective for abating wind erosion. With decreasing porosity of the fence, pressure fluctuations on the model surface are increased. The mean pressure coefficients are decreased only when the fence height is greater than the model height. The effect of distance between wind fence and triangular prism was not significant, compared to that of the fence porosity and height.

  • The flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by interaction of a pair of vortices were studied experimentally. The test facility consisted of a boundary-layer wind tunnel with a vortex introduced into the flow by half-delta winglet protruding from the surface. In order to control the strength of the longitudinal vortices, the angles of attack of the vortex generators were varied from $\pm20\;degree\;to\;\pm45$ degree, but spacings between the vortex generators were fixed to 4 cm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity measurements were made using a five-hole pressure probe. Heat transfer measurements were made using the thermochromatic liquid to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. By using the method mentioned above, the following conclusions were obtained from the present experiment. The boundary layer was thinned in the regions where the secondary flow was directed toward the wall and thickened where it was directed away from the wall. The peak augmentation of the local heat transfer coefficient occurred in the downwash region near the point of minimum boundary-layer thickness.

  • The flow structure around the free end of a finite circular cylinder (FC) embedded in an atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) over open terrain was investigated experimentally with varying the free end shape. The experiments were carried out in a closed-return type subsonic wind tunnel. A finite cylinder with an aspect ratio (L/D) of 6 was mounted vertically on a long flat plate. The Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter is about Re=7,500. The velocity fields near the FC free end were measured using the single-frame double-exposure PIV method. As a result, for the FC with a right-angled free end, there is a peculiar vortical structure, showing counter-rotating twin vortices near the FC free end. It is caused by the interaction between the entrained irrotational fluids from both sides of FC and the downwash flow from the FC free-end.

  • The viscous flow in an axisymmetric nozzle was analyzed while accounting for the mesh sizes in both in the free stream and the boundary layer. The Navier-Stokes equations were resolved using the finite volume method in order to determine the supersonic flow parameters at the exit of the converging-diverging nozzle. The numerical technique in the aforementioned method uses the flux vector splitting of Van Leer. An adequate time stepping parameter, along with the Courant, Friedrich, Lewis coefficient and mesh size level, was selected to ensure numerical convergence. The boundary layer thickness significantly affected the viscous flow parameters at the exit of the nozzle. The best solution was obtained using a very fine grid, especially near the wall at which a strong variation of velocity, temperature and shear stress was observed. This study confirmed that the boundary layer thickness can be obtained only if the size of the mesh is lower than a certain value. The nozzles are used at the exit of the shock tube in order to obtain supersonic flows for various tests. They also used in propulsion to obtain the thrust necessary to the displacement of the vehicles.

  • Direct numerical simulations were performed to analyze the effects of time-periodical blowing through a spanwise slot on a turbulent boundary layer. The blowing velocity was varied in a cyclic manner from 0 to 2A$^{+}$(A$^{+}$ =0.25, 0.50 and 1.00) at a fixed blowing frequency of f$^{+}$=0.017. The effect of steady blowing (SB) was also examined, and the SB results were compared with those for periodic blowing (PB). PB reduced the skin friction near the slot, although to a slightly lesser extent than SB. PB was found to generate a spanwise vortical structure in the downstream of the slot. This vortex generates a reverse flow near the wall, thereby reducing the wall shear stress. The wall-normal and spanwise turbulence intensities under PB are increased as compared to those under SB, whereas the streamwise turbulent intensity under PB is weaker than that under SB. PB enhances more energy redistribution than SB. The periodic response of the streamwise turbulence intensity to PB is propagated to a lesser extent than that of the other components of the turbulence intensities and the Reynolds shear stress.
