The purpose of this research is to investigate how the boundary layer separation caused by a tripping wire installed in front of the flat plate affects the transition from laminar to turbulent flow, and consequently mass transfer. A naphthalene sublimation technique is used to measure the local mass transfer coefficients on the flat plate, and two boundary conditions for the developed and developing flow are considered to evaluate the effects of the flow boundary. The local mass transfer data for a flat plate with a tripping wire are compared with the data for a flat plate without a tripping wire. The variation trends of the local heat transfer coefficients for the plates with and without the tripping wire are similar to each other in the case of the developing flow, but are quite different for the developed flow. The average Sherwood number for the flat plate with a tripping wire is much higher than that without a tripping wire because of the boundary layer separation.

The interfacial transition zone(ITZ) which is the boundary layer between cement composites and aggregates is considered to be the region of gradual transition, heterogeneous, and the weakest part of concrete. For the development of lightweight high strength concrete, it is essential to evaluate the mechanical properties of ITZ between high strength concrete with low water-binder ratio and lightweight aggregates. However, the mechanical properties of ITZ are not well established due to its high porosity and complex structure. Furthermore, the properties of ITZ in concrete using lightweight aggregates are dominated by more various variations (e.g. water-binder ratio, water absorption capacity of aggregate, curing conditions) than normal-weight aggregate concrete. This study aims to elucidate the mechanical properties of ITZ in lightweight high-strength cement composites according to the types of aggregates and the aggregate sizes. Nanoindentation analysis was used to evaluate the elastic modulus of ITZ between high strength cement composites with the water-binder ratio of 0.2 and normal sand, lightweight aggregate with different aggregate siz es of 2mm and 5mm in this study.
The vortical structures in a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) developed over a flat plate have been investigated experimentally. The flow conditions tested in this study were Re$_{\theta}$ = 3700, Re$_{\delta}$ = 11${\times}$105 and the shape factor H = 1.3. Instantaneous velocity fields in the streamwise-wall-normal planes were measured by using a dynamic PIV system. A trip-wire and sandpapers were placed behind the leading edge to promote the turbulent transition. 1000 velocity fields were obtained consecutively with a time interval of 1 millisecond. Streamwise u-velocity components were temporally averaged in the measuring plane. In addition, 2000 velocity fields were obtained randomly and ensemble-averaged to get the fully-developed turbulent characteristics. Profiles of the normalized u-component, turbulent intensities and Reynolds shear stress were evaluated. The structures of spanwise vortices were extracted from the instantaneous velocity fields by determining the swirling strength, ${\lambda}_{ci}$. The wall-normalized locations of vortices were temporally averaged in the measuring plane with respect to their rotational direction. The correlations between the temporally averaged u and the temporally averaged $y^+$ of vortices were evaluated. For the case of positive vortices, the correlation is not significant. However, the negative vortices show a strong negative correlation. The y-location of negative vortices tends to increase, as the averaged u decreases and vice versa. These findings indicate that the number of negative vortices in the outer layer increases during the outward bursting events.

The performance in the practical combustion system including reciprocating engines and gas turbine combustors is being much governed by turbulent reacting flow that is often analyzed by both a laminar flamelets concept and flame interaction. The characteristics of laminar flame interaction have been investigated numerically to provide basic understanding of wrinkled turbulent flames under concentration interaction resulting from inhomogeneity in fuel-air mixing, especially focused on the transition of flame characteristics such as diffusion flame, partially premixed diffusion flame, and triple-layer flame by the variation in the degree of premixedness. The extinction stretch rates to the premixedness have also been obtained in this paper. The boundary defining the regime of the existence of triple-layer flames as functions of both stretch rate and premixedness has been determined which agrees well with previously reported experiment measuring OH radical concentration peaks based on PLIF.
Chulwha pieces collected from Hakbong-ri site in Keryong mountain were studied whether there is reactions or not in each layer to investigate firing condition of glaze, body, Chulwha, engobe of Buncheong ware in the early Chosun Dynasty, 15th~16th Century. As a result of XRD analysis of a Chulwha piece, a main crystal phase was $\alpha$-Quartz and a second was Mullite. It was assumed the firing temperature would be around $1200^{\circ}C$ because a little amount of Mullite was formed in the body and there was no phase transition $\alpha$-Quartz to cristobalite. As a result of ICRM analysis, Chulwha and glaze didn't react and the melted glazes were sunk into the Chunwha particles. The thin layer of glaze was found on the Chulwha layer. As a result, the color of Chulwha layer always came to vivid black. Moreover, Chulwha painting didn't spread over the Buncheong ware, because Chulwha and engobe didn't react. The boundary interface of engobe and body was not clear because they had similar compositions. This shows engobe was composed of more $Al_2O_3$ than body.

This paper investigates the effects of inlet turbulence conditions and near-wall treatment methods on the heat transfer prediction of gas turbine vanes within the range of engine relevant turbulence conditions. The two near-wall treatment methods, the wall-function and low-Reynolds number method, were combined with the SST and ${\omega}RSM$ turbulence model. Additionally, the RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$, SSG RSM, and $SST_+{\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ transition model were adopted for the purpose of comparison. All computations were conducted using a commercial CFD code, CFX, considering a three-dimensional, steady, compressible flow. The conjugate heat transfer method was applied to all simulation cases with internally cooled NASA turbine vanes. The CFD results at mid-span were compared with the measured data under different inlet turbulence conditions. In the SST solutions, on the pressure side, both the wall-function and low-Reynolds number method exhibited a reasonable agreement with the measured data. On the suction side, however, both wall-function and low-Reynolds number method failed to predict the variations of heat transfer coefficient and temperature caused by boundary layer flow transition. In the ${\omega}RSM$ results, the wall-function showed reasonable predictions for both the heat transfer coefficient and temperature variations including flow transition onset on suction side, but, low-Reynolds methods did not properly capture the variation of the heat transfer coefficient. The $SST_+{\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ transition model showed variation of the heat transfer coefficient on the transition regions, but did not capture the proper transition onset location, and was found to be much more sensitive to the inlet turbulence length scale. Overall, the Reynolds stress model and wall function configuration showed the reasonable predictions in presented cases.
A numerical experiment is made in order to clarify the mechanism of the upwelling phenomenon along the coast near the poleward edge of the western boundary current. The possibility of the upwelling is suggested from the analysis of the observational data in the east of Honshu, Japan, and in the south eastern coast of Korean Peninsula. This upwelling phenomenon is very deep and can be traced to the bottom layer. The upwelling phenomenon seems to be a general oceanic feature which characterizes the region along the west coast near the poleward edge of the western boundary current. This experiment is simulating the oceanic condition of the transition region between Kuroshio front and the Oyashio front in the east of Honshu, Japan. The possible explanations of the causes of the upwelling are as follows; In the interior of the modeled ocean the cold heavy water supplied from the north and the warm light water from the south make the north-south gradient of the pressure field and accelerate the eastward current to produce the h-orizontal divergence feld near the west coast. The divergence is compensated by the upwelling near the separation region. Another one is that the upwell-ed cold water strengthen constantly the pressure gradient which is balanced by the northward current and is weakened by the horizontal diffusion.

An analysis of laminar mixed convection flow adjacent to the inclined flat surface which is subjected to a uniform temperature in a uniform free stream is performed. Nonsimilar boundary layed equation are derived by using the mixed convection parameters such that smooth transition from the purely forced convection limit to the purely free convection limit is possible. The governing equations are solved by a finite difference method using the coupled box scheme of sixth order. Numerical results are presented for prandtl numbers of 0.7 and 7 with the angle of inclination ranging from 0 to 90 degree from the vertical. The velocity distributions for the buoyancy assisting flow exhibit a significant overshoot above the free stream value in the region of intense mixed convection and the velocity field is found to be more sensitive to the buoyancy effect than the temperature field. The separation point near the wall was obtained for the buoyancy opposing flow. The local Nusselt number increases for buoyancy assisting flow and decreases for opposing flow with increasing value of the local Grashoff number in the mixed convection parameter. For large Prandtl number, the Nusselt number and the friction factor decrease significantly near the separation point. Present numerical predictions are in good agreement with recent experimental results by Ramachandran.

Single-phase convection and nucleate boiling heat transfer were locally investigated for confined planar water jets. The detailed distributions of the wall temperature and the convection coefficient as well as the typical boiling curves were discussed. The curve for the single-phase convection indicated the developing laminar boundary layer, accompanied by monotonic increase of the wall temperature in the stream direction. Boiling was initiated from the furthest downstream as heat flux increased. Heat transfer variation according to the streamwise location was reduced as heat flux increased enough to create the vigorous nucleate boiling. Velocity effects were considered for the confined free-surface jet. Higher velocity of the jet caused the boiling incipient to be delayed more. The transition to turbulence precipitated by the bubble-induced disturbance was obvious only for the highest velocity, which enabled the boiling incipient to start in the middle of the heated surface, rather than the furthest downstream as was the case of the moderate and low velocities. The temperature at offset line were somewhat tower than those at the centerline for single-phase convection and partial boiling, and these differences were reduced as the nucleate boiling developed. For the region prior to transition, the convection coefficient distributions were similar in both cases while the temperatures were somewhat lower in the submerged jet. For single-phase convection, transition was initiated at $x/W{\cong}2.5$ and completed soon for the submerged jet, but the onset of transition was retarded to the distance at $x/W{\cong}6$ for the fee-surface jet.

A computational simulation for a nonslender BWB UCAV configuration with rounded leading edge and span of 1.0m was performed to analyze its aerodynamic characteristics. The freestream is 50m/s over -4 to 26 degree A.o.A.s. Reynolds number based on the mean chord length is $1.25{\times}10^6$. 3D multi block hexahedral grids are used which allow good grid quality and ease to capture boundary layer. ${\gamma}-Re_{\theta}$ model as well as $k-{\omega}$ SST model is employed to assess the effect of transition for flow behavior. Drag and lift of the UCAV were well predicted while $C_M$ is under predicted at high angle of attacks and influenced by the turbulence models strongly. After assessing pressure distribution, skin friction lines and velocity field around the UCAV configuration, it was found that transition effect should be considered to enhance the prediction of aerodynamic behavior by a vortical flowfield.
