마찰저항감소를 위한 난류유동의 DNS/LES 해석기술의 개발 (Development of Numerical Tool for the DNS/LES of Turbulent Flow for Frictional Drag Reduction)

  • The friction drag reduction of a ship is of prime importance for the design and production of high-valued/high-tech ship. Thus, this study carried out the development of reliable numerical tools to identify the friction drag reduction mechanism for turbulent boundary layer on the ship surface and to deduce the optimum reduction technique by numerical experiment. The developed LES and DNS numerical tools were applied to simulate the turbulent channel flow These results were very well matched with previous results not only qualitatively but also quantitatively. The parallelization using MPI (Message Passing Interface) technique implemented in the developed code to speed up the simulation and to obtain the accurate results from the fine grid system was testified its computational efficiency.

자유유동 난류강도에 따른 익형 위 후류유도 경계층 천이의 거동 (Wake-Induced Boundary Layer Transition on an Airfoil at Moderate Free-Stream Turbulence)

  • Wake-induced boundary-layer transition on a NACA0012 airfoil with zero angle of attack is experimentally investigated in periodically passing wakes under the moderate level of free-stream turbulence. The periodic wakes are generated by rotating circular cylinders clockwise or counterclockwise around the airfoil. The free-stream turbulence is produced by a grid upstream of the rotating cylinder, and its intensities $(Tu_{\infty})$ at the leading edge of the airfoil are 0.5 and 3.5%, respectively. The Reynolds number (Rec) based on chord length (C) of the airfoil is $2.0{\times}10^5$, and Strouhal number (Stc) of the passing wake is about 1.4. Time- and phase-averaged streamwise mean velocities and turbulence fluctuations are measured with a single hot-wire probe, and especially, the corresponding wall skin friction is evaluated using a computational Preston tube method. The patch under the high free-stream turbulence $(Tu_{\infty}=3.5%)$ grows more greatly in laminar-like regions compared with that under the low turbulence $(Tu_{\infty}=0.5%)$ in laminar regions. The former, however, does not greatly change the turbulence level in very near-wall region while the latter does it. At further downstream, the former interacts vigorously with high environmental turbulence inside the pre-existing transitional boundary layer and gradually loses its identification, whereas the latter keeps growing in the laminar boundary layer. The calmed region is more clearly observed under the lower free-stream turbulence level and with the receding wakes.

철근콘크리트 전단벽-모멘트골조 형식 건물에 대한 마찰형 감쇠기 설치방식 비교연구 (Configurations of the Friction Dampers Installed in a Reinforced Concrete Shear Wall-Moment Frame System)

  • 본 연구에서는 전단벽-모멘트골조 시스템으로서 전단벽이 주로 횡력을 부담하는 철근콘크리트 건물을 대상으로 다양한 설치형식과 마찰력의 총량 및 분포를 갖는 마찰형 감쇠기의 제진보강 효과를 수치해석을 통해 비교 분석하였다. 감쇠기의 설치형식으로서 전단벽에 인접한 대각가새형, 벽체가 없는 골조를 보강하는 대각가새형 및 벽체 단부를 보강하는 수직경계요소형을 고려하였다. 하중기준 강화로 설계용보다 크게 증가한 지진하중에 대해 건물의 재료비선형성을 고려한 비선형시간이력해석을 수행하여 에너지소산, 횡하중 및 부재손상도 측면에서 마찰형 감쇠기의 제진성능을 비교 분석하였다. 기준마찰력의 30% 수준의 총마찰력을 갖는 벽체보강 대각가새형 설치형식이 전반적으로 가장 우수한 제진성능을 보이며,이 경우에 마찰력 배분방식은 중요하지 않았다. 또한 일부층에 집중설치함으로써 전층설치에 약간 못미치는 제진성능을 얻을 수 있었다.

  • In this study, we experimentally investigate the possibility of skin-friction drag reduction by series of transverse cavities in a turbulent boundary layer flow. The effects of cavity depth (d), cavity length (l) and cavity spacing (s) on the skin friction drag are examined in the range of $Re_{\theta}\;=\;4030\;{\sim}\;7360$, $d/{\theta}_0\;=\;0.13\;{\sim}1.03$, l/d = 1 ~ 4 and s/d = 5 ~ 20. We perform experiments for twenty different cavity geometries and directly measure total drag force using in-house force measurement system. In most cases, the skin friction drag is increased. At several cases, however, small drag reduction is obtained. The variation of the skin ftiction drag is more sensitive to the cavity length than to the cavity depth or cavity spacing, and drag is reduced at $s/l\;{\geq}\;10$ and $l/{\theta}_0\;{\leq}\;0.26$ irrespective of the cavity depth. At $l/\bar{\theta}_0\;=\;0.13$ and s/l = 10, maximum 2% drag reduction is achieved. When the skin friction drag is reduced, there is little interaction between the flows inside and outside cavity, and the flow changed by the cavity is rapidly recovered at the following crest. A stable vortex is formed inside a cavity in the case of drag reduction. This vortex generates negative skin friction drag at the cavity bottom wall. Although there is form drag due to the cavity itself, total drag is reduced due to the negative skin friction drag.

Effect of Lubricant with Nanodiamond Particles in Sliding Friction

  • This paper presents the experimental effects of lubricant with nanodiamond particles in sliding friction. In order to improve the performance of lubricants many additives are used, such as MoS2, cadmium chloride, indium, sulfides, and phosphides. These additives are harmful to human health and to the environment, so alternatives are necessary. One such alternative is nanodiamond powder, which has a large surface area. In order to investigate the effect of nanodiamonds in lubricants under sliding friction, they are dispersed in the lubricant at a variety of concentrations (0 wt%, 0.1 wt%, 0.3 wt%, 0.5 wt%, and 1 wt%) using the matrix synthesis method. Friction and wear tests are performed according to the ASTM G99 method using a pin-on-disc tester at room temperature. The specimens used in this experiment are AISI 52100 ball bearings and AISI 1020 steel discs. During the test, lubricant mixed with nanodiamond is supplied constantly to keep the two bodies separated by a lubricant film. To maintain boundary lubrication, the speed is set to 0.18 m/s and a load of 294 N is applied to the disc through the pin. Results are recorded by using workbench software over the test duration of 10 minutes. Experimental results show that when the concentration of nanodiamond increases, the coefficient of friction decreases. However, above a nanodiamond concentration of 0.5 wt%, both the coefficient of friction and wear volume increase. From this experiment, the optimum concentration of nanodiamond showing a minimum coefficient of friction of 0.09 and minimum wear volume of 0.82 nm2 was 0.5 wt%.

  • Direct Numerical Simulation(DNS) of turbulent mass transfer in fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed to study the effect of wall boundary conditions on the concentration fields at $Re_{\tau}$=180 based on friction velocity and pipe radius. Fully developed turbulent pipe flows for Sc=0.71 are studied with two different wall boundary conditions, namely, constant mass flux and constant wall concentration. The mean concentration profiles and turbulent mass fluxes obtained from the present DNS are in good agreement with the previous numerical results currently available. To investigate the effects of wall boundary condition on the turbulent mass transfer, the mean concentration profile, root-mean-square of concentration fluctuation, turbulent mass fluxes and higher-order statistics(Skewness and Flatness factor) are compared for the two cases. Furthermore, the budgets of turbulent mass fluxes and concentration variance were computed and analyzed to elucidate the effects of wall boundary conditions on the turbulent mass transfer.

  • Hot-wire measurements are performed in boundary layers developing on a NACA0012 airfoil over which wakes pass periodically. The Reynolds number based on chord length of the airfoil is 2$\times$10(sup)5 and the wakes are generated by circular cylinders rotating clockwise and counterclockwise around the airfoil. This paper and its companion Part II describe the phenomena of wake-induced transition of the boundary layers on the airfoil using measured data; phase-and time-averaged streamwise mean velocities, turbulent fluctuations, integral parameters and wall skin frictions. This paper describes the background and facility together with results of time-averaged quantities. Due to the passing wake with mean velocity defects and high turbulence intensities, the laminar boundary layer is periodically disturbed at the upstream station and becomes steady-state transitional boundary layer at the downstream station. The velocity defect in the passing wake changes the local pressure at the leading of the airfoil, significantly affects the time-mean pressure distribution on the airfoil and eventually, has influence on the transition process of the boundary layer.

원심 압축기의 임펠러 원판 마찰 손실에 대한 CFD 해석 (CFD analysis of the Disk Friction Loss on the Centrifugal Compressor Impeller)

  • 원심 압축기의 원판 마찰 손실은 동력 손실의 한 종류로써, 원심 압축기의 전체 효율 향상을 위해 원판 마찰 손실을 줄여야 한다. 본 연구에서는 원심 압축기의 임펠러 디스크 면과 케이싱 사이의 축 간격 및 표면 조도 변화에 따른 원판 마찰 손실을 분석하였고, 원판마찰손실 저감을 위한 새로운 이론식을 제안하고자 한다. 원심 압축기 임펠러의 정상상태 해석을 위해서 상용 전산해석 코드인 FLUENT의 회전 좌표계와 2-equation k-${\omega}$ SST 모델을 사용하였다. CFD 해석 결과, 원심압축기 임펠러의 원판 마찰 손실은 축 간격의 변화보다는 표면조도의 변화에 더 큰 영향을 받는 것으로 분석되었다. 원심압축기 임펠러의 원판 마찰 손실을 최소화하기 위해서 축 간격은 이론적인 경계층 두께와 동일하도록 설정하고 표면조도는 최소화해야 한다.

마찰접합 된 A6063 합금의 미세조직과 기계적 특성 평가 (Evaluation of the Microstructures and Mechanical Properties on Friction Welded A6063 Alloy)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the developed microstructures and mechanical properties of friction welded A6063 alloy. For this work, specimens were prepared at a size of 12 mm ${\O}{\times}80mm$, and friction welding was carried out at a rotation speed of 2,000 RPM, friction pressure of $12kgf/cm^2$ and upset pressure of $25kgf/cm^2$. To perform an analysis of the grain boundary characteristic distributions, such as the grain size, orientation and misorientation angle distributions, the electron back-scattering diffraction method was used. In addition, in order to identify the dispersed intermetallic compounds of the base and welded materials, transmission electron microscopy was used. The experimental results found that the application of friction welding on A6063 led to significant grain refinement of the welded zone relative to that of the base material. Besides this, intermetallic compounds such as AlMnSi and $Al_2Cu$ were found to be dispersed with more refined size relative to that of the base material. This formation retains the mechanical properties of the welds, which results in the fracture aspect at the base material zone. Therefore, based on the developed microstructures and mechanical properties, the application of friction welding on A6063 could be used to obtain a sound weld zone.
