A numerical study for the number of terms of a power series stress function and the effect of hybrid element size on stress analysis around a hole in loaded orthotropic composites is presented. The hybrid method coupling experimental and/or theoretical inputs and complex variable formulations involving conformal mappings and analytical continuity is used to calculate tangential stress on the boundary of the hole in uniaxially loaded, finite width glass epoxy tensile plate. The tests are done by rarying the number of terms, element size and nodal locations on the external boundary of the hybrid region. The numerical results indicate that the hybrid method is accurate and powerful in both experimental and numerical stress analysis.

Structural analyses are preformed for the high pressure steam turbine casings of the nuclear and the fossil power plants. An axisymmetric boundary element program for analysis of the casings is developed and applied in the process of practical structural design. To show the useful-ness and accuracy of the developed program results of the analysis are compared with those of the finite element analysis under hydrostatic test pressure, To check the validity of the axisymmetric numerical analysis of the casings the stresses resulting from the hydrostatic test pressure are measured using the strain gate. The results of the numerical analyses are compared and discussed with those of the experiments.
The finite element model for automotive muffler analysis is improved by modifying the boundary condition of outlet and the mesh of finite element model. The model minimizes the difference between transmission loss from analysis and that from experiment. Four different boundary conditions and the four types of finite element model are tested to find out the best one of those. From the case study it is verified that the bevel of transmission loss can be changed by the variation of radiation impedance value. Also the resonance or anti-resonance frequencies of transmission loss can be shifted by the variation of finite element mesh. An improved finite element model of muffler is proposed in consideration with the accuracy and the computing time of analysis.
BEASY is a soft-ware tool which may be used to solve problems in heat transfer(linear and non-linear, steady state and transient) and linear elastic stress analysis. It is based on the boundary element method. The central part is the analysis module, called BEASY. For pre- and post-processing the BEASY Interactive Modeling System BEASY-IMS can be used. Three examples are devoted to show the capability of BEASY.
This study investigates the influence of loading and inflow conditions on tidal turbine performance from a hydrodynamic and hydroacoustic point of view. A boundary element method is utilized for the former to investigate turbine performance at various loading conditions under zero/non-zero yaw inflow. The boundary element method is selected as it has been selected, tested, and validated to be computationally efficient and accurate for marine hydrodynamic problems. Once the hydrodynamic solutions are obtained, such as the time-dependent surface pressures and periodic motion of the turbine blade, they are taken as the known noise sources for the subsequence hydroacoustic analysis based on the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings formulation given in a form proposed by Farassat. This formulation is coupled with the boundary element method to fully consider the three-dimensional shape of the turbine and the speed of sound in the acoustic analysis. For validations, a model turbine is taken from a reference paper, and the comparison between numerical predictions and experimental data reveals satisfactory agreement in hydrodynamic performance. Importantly, this study shows that the noise patterns and sound pressure levels at both the near- and far-field are affected by different loading conditions and sensitive to the inclination imposed in the incoming flow.
The equivalent boundary conditions have been applied to the front door panel forming process, in order to demonstrate its reliability and validity. The elongation in the bead forming process is applied to the binder wrap process as the equivalent displacement boundary condition and the restraining force in the drawing process is applied to stamping process as the equivalent force boundary condition. The result calculated with the equivalent boundary conditions shows closer coincidence with the experimental result than simulation with different boundary conditions. The numerical result fully demonstrates that drawbead forming simulation for calculation of equivalent boundary conditions is necessary and effective.
A coupled method, that combines the Ritz method and the finite element (FE) method, is proposed to solve the vibration problem of rectangular thin and thick plates with general boundary conditions. The eigenvalue partial differential equation(s) of the plate is (are) first reduced to a set of eigenvalue ordinary differential equations by the application of the Ritz method. The resulting eigenvalue differential equations are then reduced to an eigenvalue algebraic equation system using the finite element method. The natural boundary conditions of the plate problem including the free edge and free corner boundary conditions are also implemented in a simple and accurate manner. Various boundary conditions including simply supported, clamped and free boundary conditions are considered. Comparisons with existing numerical and analytical solutions show that the proposed mixed method can produce highly accurate results for the problems considered using a small number of Ritz terms and finite elements. The proposed mixed Ritz-FE formulation is also compared with the mixed FE-Ritz formulation which has been recently proposed by the present author and his co-author. It is found that the proposed mixed Ritz-FE formulation is more efficient than the mixed FE-Ritz formulation for free vibration analysis of rectangular plates with Levy-type boundary conditions.
In this study, structural behavior of plastic greenhouse foundation was investigated using rational finite element modeling for structures which have different material properties each other. Because the concrete foundation of plastic greenhouse and soil which surround and support the concrete foundation have very different material property, the boundary between two structures were modeled by a interface element. The interface element was able to represent sliding, separation, uplift and re-bonding of the boundary between concrete foundation and soil. The results of static and dynamic analysis showed that horizontal and vertical displacement of concrete foundation displayed a decreasing tendency with increasing depth of foundation. The second frequency from modal analysis of structure including foundation and soil was estimate to closely related with wind load.
This paper focuses on post-buckling analysis of Timoshenko beams with various boundary conditions subjected to a non-uniform thermal loading by using the total Lagrangian Timoshenko beam element approximation. Six types of support conditions for the beams are considered. The considered highly non-linear problem is solved by using incremental displacement-based finite element method in conjunction with Newton-Raphson iteration method. As far as the authors know, there is no study on the post-buckling analysis of Timoshenko beams under uniform and non-uniform thermal loading considering full geometric non-linearity investigated by using finite element method. The convergence studies are made and the obtained results are compared with the published results. In the study, the relationships between deflections, end rotational angles, end constraint forces, thermal buckling configuration, stress distributions through the thickness of the beams and temperature rising are illustrated in detail in post-buckling case.
The purpose of this paper is to study shear locking-free analysis of thick plates using Mindlin's theory and to determine the effects of the thickness/span ratio, the aspect ratio and the boundary conditions on the linear responses of thick plates subjected to uniformly distributed loads. Finite element formulation of the equations of the thick plate theory is derived by using higher order displacement shape functions. A computer program using finite element method is coded in C++ to analyze the plates clamped or simply supported along all four edges. In the analysis, 8- and 17-noded quadrilateral finite elements are used. Graphs and tables are presented that should help engineers in the design of thick plates. It is concluded that 17-noded finite element converges to exact results much faster than 8-noded finite element, and that it is better to use 17-noded finite element for shear-locking free analysis of plates. It is also concluded, in general, that the maximum displacement and bending moment increase with increasing aspect ratio, and that the results obtained in this study are better than the results given in the literature.
