  • This paper presents the stress and deformation characteristics of $9\%$ nickel based inner tank bottom plate in full containment LNG storage tank. When a . maximum hydrostatic pressure applies the bottom plate of inner tank, the maximum = f stress and displacement distributions of the bottom plate have been analyzed as ' functions of inclined angle of the bottom plate, and the thickness and length of the annular plate between the shell plate and bottom one. The calculated results indicate that the taper of the bottom plate is recommended by 100${\~}$200 : 1 for $140,000m^3$ storage capacity of the inner tank. The results recommend that the thickness of the annular plate is around 20mm and the length is greater than 3m for a maximum hydrostatic pressure of $140,000m^3$ tank capacity.

  • This study was to investigate the effects of soil-structure relative stiffness on the structural characteristics of the cylindrical tank supported by soil. A standard example model of the farm silo rested on the Winkler's subsoil model was used for the analysis of soil-structure coupled system. In this paper, Winkler's constants 4,15 and l00kg/cm$^2$/cm were considered and the bottom plate thicknesses of the farm silo 20, 30, 50,100 and 150cm were adopted. For the given model the effects of bottom plate thickness were the most conspicuous at weakest Winkler's constant 4kg/ cm$^2$/cm. While when Winkler's constant is l00kg/cm$^2$/cm, the effect of the bottom plate thickness is almost negligible. On the other hand, when the bottom plate thickness is more than 100cm, the effects of elastic foundation were aknost disappeared. In design practice, it is hoped that the thicknesses of bottom plate should be determined reasonably because of it's considerable effect on the structural characteristics as the lOOcm thickness of bottom plate will not be practical value in usual sites.

  • A WIG(Wing-In-Ground effect) craft flies close to the water surface by utilizing a cushion of relatively high pressurized air between its wing and water surface. This implies that when one designs such craft it is important to have lightweight structures with adequate strength to resist external loads with some margins. To investigate this requirement, this paper deals with the structural analysis of the bottom plate of small WIG craft having a design landing weight of 1.2-ton. As building materials for the WIG craft, pre-preg carbon/epoxy composites are considered. The strength information of the bottom plate is obtained using the first-ply-failure analysis in conjunction with a mid-plane symmetric laminated plate theory. As a result, the first-ply-failure location, load and deflection of the bottom plate are obtained. The calculated strength information is compared with the water reaction load for the bottom plate of seaplanes considered when they land on the water surface -the same fluid-structure interaction mechanism as that of WIG craft. In the calculation of seaplane water reaction load information, the rules shown in FAR(Federal Aviation Regulations) Part 25 are used. Through the comparison, the structural integrity of the bottom plate for the WIG craft is checked.

  • In order to establish a design guide for the bottom plate structure of a 4.3 ton aluminum planning boat, the feasibilities of bottom plate scantling of the ship are investigated based on the results of structural strength analysis and a simple equation and evaluation system are developed for initial structural design purposes. This study consists of 5 steps: First, the background, necessity, and purpose of this study are explained briefly, Second, the principal dimensions of this ship, the position of the considered bottom plate members and material characteristics are introduced. Third, the equivalent design pressure concept is introduced and evaluated based on experience and experimental data. Fourth, the strength of bottom plate members are examined using elasto-plastic nonlinear structural analysis, and response levels and several boundary conditions are reviewed based on the analysis results. Finally, in order to suggest design guides in respect to the ship's structural design, a simple design equation and evaluation system for bottom plate members are suggested for boats in the 4.3 ton aluminumboat range through the introduction of safety factorsbased on the ultimate design pressure concept.

  • Aluminum was used as metallic bipolar plate material to reduce a stack weight. The functional materials such as conductive material, Au and nonconductive material, PTFE [polytetrafluoroethylene] were coated on the bipolar plate to enhance electrical contact and corrosion prevention in PEMFC. The active area of bipolar plate is divided into the top layer part that electric current mainly passes, and the bottom layer part that gas and water pass. The bottom layer part in the flow channel needs not to have electrical conductivity because it doesn't pass electric current directly. In this reason, Au on the top layer and PTFE on the bottom layer were coated to apply high electrical conductivity and/or good corrosion resistance. Although the single cell performance using Au-PTFE/Al bipolar plate was shown 78% in comparison with that of graphite, specific power of Au-PTFE/Al bipolar plate(0.4 W/g) was twice as much as graphite bipolar plate.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of gravity-designed post tensioned (PT) flat plate frames with and without slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column. For the PT flat plate frames, the slab bottom reinforcement is often omitted since the requirement for the slab bottom reinforcement for PT flat plates is not clearly specified in ACI 318-08. This study evaluates the seismic performance of the model frames was evaluated by conducting nonlinear time history analysis. The seismic performance of PT flat plate frames is significantly improved by placing slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column.

  • In ship's structure, deck and bottom plate are main strength member subjected to the inplane load due to longitudinal bending, i.e. tensile and/or compressive load. The deck and bottom plate are subdivided into many plate members by stiffeners and girders longitudinally and transversely. Since the plate members are thin, it is likely to be collapsed under compressive load, and when we consider the local strength of deck and bottom, the plate members play an important role in the longitudinal strength. Therefore the precise analysis of their compressive ultimate strength is required for the optimal design of ship's structures. In this paper, the modified analytical method using the incremental form of principle of virtual displacement is introduced to determine the compressive ultimate load of plate members. The results by the present method is satisfactory, and the present method is more effective and economical than the finite element method.

  • This study developed an analytical model for predicting nonlinear behavior of PT flat plate frames having slab-column connections with and without slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column. The developed model can predict the failure sequence until punching failure occurs. For verifying the analytical model, the test results of PT flat plate slab-column connections were compared with the results of the analysis. Moreover, the results of static pushover test and shaking table test of 2 story PT flat plate frame were compared with analysis results. For evaluating seismic performance of PT flat plate frame, this study conducted nonlinear response history analysis of the 2 story PT flat plate frame with and without slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column under 1940 El Centro ground motion scaled to have pseudo spectral acceleration of 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7g at the fundamental period of the frame. This study observed that as ground motion is more intense, seismic demands for the frame having the connections without slab bottom reinforcement passing through the column are larger than those without slab bottom reinforcement.

  • This study aims to develop a computerized program for analysis of the ground-supported cylindrical shell structure with step varied section and to find out its mechanical characteri- stics through application of the developed program to the analysis of a ensiled farm silo as a model structure. The thickness of wall and bottom-plate of farm silo is assumed to be step-varied and its detailed structural dimensions are presented in Tab. 1 and 2. Several numerical case studies show that sectional stresses of the sample structures are largely reduced by adopting "varied section" design technique. And, other major results ob- tained from this study are summarize4 as follows ; 1. The variation of wall-thickness has a great influence on bending stresses of wall. Ho- wever, the larger the relative thickness of bottom-plate is, the smaller the influence is. 2. The magnitude of thickness of projecting toe of bottom-plate has negligible effect on sectional stresses 3. The conventional design methodology, which assumes the bottom edge of wall as clam- ped on ground, is proved to be discarded through the numerical analysis. 4. It is found that the "varied section" design technique should get similar effects as in the case of thick bott6m-plate having uniform thickness. 5. The variation of wall-thickness has a considerable effect on the bending stresses of bo- ttom-plate. Especially, this phenomenon is very remarkable in its projecting toe. In some cases. the negative bending moment may be acted on.

  • This study evaluates the seismic performance of post-tensioned(PT) flat plate frames with or without slab bottom reinforcement. For this purpose, 3 and 9 story PT flat plate frames designed only considering gravity loads. This study conducts a nonlinear static pushover analysis. This study use an analytical model which is able to represent punching shear failure and fracture mechanism. The analytical results showed that seismic performance of PT flat plate frame is strongly influenced by the existence of slab bottom reinforcement through column. By placing slab bottom reinforcement in PT flat plate frame, lateral strength and deformation capacity are significantly increased.
