  • In the current work, we demonstrate the gas phase plasma synthesis of ultrafine boron nanoparticles by decomposing boron trichloride (BCl3) gas in an argon-hydrogen thermal plasma and quenching the hot plasma by expansion through a ceramic nozzle, driving the homogeneous nucleation of nanoparticles. It is shown that ultrafine nanoparticles can be produced from the experiments. We also show the characterization results regarding the oxidation of boron nanoparticles at room temperature using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and the combined Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (STEM) and Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS).

  • A new method for producing boron-containing nanoparticles is described. Boron trichloride ($BCl_3$) and methane ($CH_4$) are dissociated through injection into a thermal plasma followed by a nucleation process producing boron or boron carbide nanoparticles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to detect B-C bonds related to the carbide state and to probe the ratio of boron to carbon in the B-C bond structure. In addition, nanoparticles were characterized with scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy. It was found that nanoparticles were in the range 30-70 nm and a boron to carbon ratio in the B-C bond structure of up to 2 can be reached when $BCl_3$ of 20 sccm and $CH_4$ of 25 sccm were used.

  • A two-step plasma-assisted boronizing process was carried out on the AISI 1045 steel substrate to reduce the pore density introduced by a conventional single plasma boronizing process. The specimens were plasma boronized for 1 h at $650^{\circ}C$ and subsequently far 7 h at $800^{\circ}C$ in an atmosphere of $BCl_3-H_2-Ar$. The boride layer thickness was parabolic in boronizing time, a high HV reading of 1540 was found up to the boride layer thickness of $25{\mu}m$. It was found that the morphology of the boride layer prepared by the two-step boronizing process was changed from a columnar to a tooth-like structure and the pores in the borided steel were eliminated completely in comparison to those synthesized by the conventional single boronizing process, implying that it is highly applicable for enhancing the dense and compact coating properties of the low-alloy steel.

  • Gu-mi hydrogen fluoride leak accident in 2012 was amplified social anxiety for chemical accidents. To relieve these anxieties Off-site Risk Assessment was introduced in 2015. Off-site Risk Assessment is targeted at most chemicals, and most of the high-pressure-toxic gases which are mainly used in high-tech industries such as semi conductor, display, Photovoltaic panels industry are included in the substance of the Off-site Risk Assessment. Since Korean companies occupy a high market share in high-tech industries, high pressure-toxic domestic gas consumption is constantly increasing. Accordingly, it is expected to increase the possibility of accidents. In accordance with the circumstances, this study was to conducted Consequence Analysis(CA) about high pressure-toxic gases those are high demand in domestic. CA was used for ALOHA developed by US EPA & US NOAA and the CA result of Arsine was the largest at 4,700 m. CA results are expected to be utilized for determining the effective Safety distances when high pressure-toxic gas leak.
