  • BN films were grown on silicon (l00) substrate by magnetically enhanced activated reactive evaporation (ME-ARE) with pulsed DC power instead of r.f. for substrate biasing. The deposited films were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). FTIR results show that the intensity of absorption band of $sp^2$ bond of BN decreased and that of $sp^3$ bond of c-BN increased with increasing pulsed DC bias voltage applied to substrate. The initially grown layer at the interface was observed by TEM and considered to be of$ sp^2$-bonded BN. The cross-sectional and planar TEM micrographs show that the upper layer on the initial layer was the single phase c-BN. It is concluded that cubic boron nitride films could be synthesized by ME-ARE process with pulsed DC biasing.

  • High concentrated $TiO_2$ nano colloids were synthesized by sol-gel method. Reactions were performed in $TiCl_4$/HCl/$H_2O$ aqueous solution and the conditions of particles such as shape, size and aggregation, etc. were controlled by polymerization and adsorption of acrylamide in surface of $TiO_2$ nano particles. And also, aminopropyltriethoxysilane was added instead of acrylamide and compared each other. The prepared colloids were well dispersed and showed the strong absorption peaks at 350nm-370nm which is blue shifted to 20-30nm, compared to macro particles. The obtained techniques from $TiO_2$ nato colloids synthesis were utilized in coating on boron nitride powders which are nonpolar and isoelectronic materials of carbon. Their surface morphology, structure, thermal stability and U. V absorption chracteristics were examined by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy), XRD(X-ray diffraction), TG/DTA(Thermogravimetric and Differential Thermal Analysis), UV-VIS(Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy).

  • The hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BN) were firstly treated by silane coupling agents 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) and 3-glycidoxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (KH560) to introduce some amino and epoxy (EP) groups on the BN surface. These modified BN nanosheets were incorporated into an EP matrix to prepare BN@KH560/EP composites with excellent thermal conductivity and electrical insulation properties. Results showed that the thermal conductivity of BN@KH560/EP composite with 20 vol% BN dosage was found to be 0.442 W/($m{\cdot}K$), which was 81% higher than that of pure EP resin. Both BN/EP composites treated by KH550 and KH560 showed rather good electrical insulation properties, although the dielectric constant of BN@KH550/EP composites were slightly higher than BN@KH560/EP composites. Moreover, BN@KH560/EP composites also showed better thermal and mechanical properties than that of BN@KH550/EP composites.

  • Hexagonal boron nitride particles (s-hBN) modified with 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) were used for the preparation of silicone composite materials. The microstructure of the composite materials was observed, and the thermal conduction and mechanical characteristics of the composite sheets were studied based on the compositions and microstructures. When a small amount of s-hBN particles was used, the thermal conductivity of the composite improved as a whole, and the tensile strength of the sheet also increased. The thermal conductivity and tensile strength of the composite in which a small amount of carbon fiber was added along with s-hBN were further improved. However, the use of carbon nanotubes with structural characteristics similar to those of carbon fiber resulted in lower thermal conductivity and tensile strength. Elastic silicone composites exhibiting 2.5 W/mK of thermal conductivity and a low hardness are expected to be used as thermally conductive interfacial sheet materials.

  • In this study, we investigate the tribological behavior of AISI 304 stainless steel pairs under deionized water and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) water dispersion lubrication. The specimen friction and wear properties are evaluated using a reciprocating ball-on-flat tribometer. The coefficient of friction remains nearly constant throughout the test under both lubricant conditions. The wear depth of the specimens under h-BN lubrication is smaller than that under deionized water lubrication, indicating the inhibition behavior of h-BN nanolubricants on direct metal-metal contacts. Optical micrographs and stylus profilometer measurements are performed to evaluate the severity of damage caused by the sliding motion and to determine the wear morphology of the specimens, respectively. The results show that h-BN nanolubricants does not have a significant effect on the friction behavior but demonstrates reduced wear owing to their trapping effect between the sliding interfaces. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy images of the specimens were acquired to confirm the trapping effect of h-BN between the sliding interfaces. The results also suggest that the trapped lubricants can distribute the contact pressure, reducing the wear damage caused by the metal-metal contact at the interface. In conclusion, h-BN nanolubricants have potential as an anti-wear additive for lubrication applications. Further investigation is needed to provide direct evidence of the trapping effect of h-BN nanoparticles between the sliding interfaces. These findings could lead to the development of more efficient and effective lubricants for various industrial applications.

  • High thermal conductivity films with electrically insulating properties have a great potential for the effective heat transfer as substrate and thermal interface materials in high density and high power electronic packages. There have been lots of studies to achieve high thermal conductivity composites using high thermal conductivity fillers such alumina, aluminum nitride, boron nitride, CNT and graphene, recently. Among them, hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) nano-sheet is a promising candidate for high thermal conductivity with electrically insulating filler material. This work presents an enhanced heat transfer properties of ceramic/polymer composite films using h-BN nano-sheets and PVA polymer resins. The h-BN nano-sheets were prepared by a mechanical exfoliation of h-BN flakes using organic media and subsequent ultrasonic treatment. High thermal conductivities over $2.8W/m{\cdot}K$ for transverse and $10W/m{\cdot}K$ for in-plane direction of the cast films were achieved for casted h-BN/PVA composite films. Further improvement of thermal conductivity up to $13.5W/m{\cdot}K$ at in-plane mode was achieved by applying uniaxial compression at the temperature above glass transition of PVA to enhance the alignment of the h-BN nano-sheets.

  • This work takes place in the context of the development of a transport phenomena simulation based on group III nitrides. Gallium and boron nitrides (GaN and BN) are both materials with interesting physical properties; they have a direct band gap and are relatively large compared to other semiconductors. The main objective of this paper is to study the effect of boron content on the electron transport of the ternary compound $B_xGa_{(1-x)}N$ and the effect of the temperature of this alloy at x=50% boron percentage, specifically the piezoelectric, acoustic, and polar optical scatterings as a function of the energy, and the electron energy and drift velocity versus the applied electric field for different boron compositions ($B_xGa_{(1-x)}N$), at various temperatures for $B_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}N$. Monte carlo simulation, was employed and the three valleys of the conduction band (${\Gamma}$, L, X) were considered to be non-parabolic. We focus on the interactions that do not significantly affect the behavior of the electron. Nevertheless, they are introduced to obtain a quantitative description of the electronic dynamics. We find that the form of the velocity-field characteristic changes substantially when the temperature is increased, and a remarkable effect is observed from the boron content in $B_xGa_{(1-x)}N$ alloy and the applied field on the dynamics of holders within the lattice as a result of interaction mechanisms.

  • In this paper, $Si_3N_4/hBN$ ceramics with various hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) contents (0, 10, 20, or 30 wt%) were fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) at $1500^{\circ}C$, 50MPa, and 10m holding time. The material properties such as the relative density, hardness, and fracture toughness were systematically evaluated according to the hBN content in the $Si_3N_4/hBN$ ceramics. The results show that relative density, hardness, and fracture toughness continuously decreased as the hBN content increased. In addition, peak-step drilling (with tool diameter $500{\mu}m$) was performed to observe the effects of hBN content in micro-hole shape and cutting force. A machined hole diameter of $510{\mu}m$ (entrance) and stable cutting force were obtained at 30 wt% hBN content. Consequently, $Si_3N_4/30wt%$ hBN ceramic is a feasible material upon which to apply semi-conductor components, and this study is very meaningful for determining correlations between material properties and machining performance.

  • Coating of amorphous nitride thin layers, such as boron nitride (BN) and carbon nitride (CN), has been performed on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for the purpose of enhancing their electron-emission performances because those nitride films have relatively low work functions and commonly exhibit negative electron affinity behavior. The CNTs were directly grown on metal-tip (tungsten, approximately 500 nm in diameter at the summit part) substrates by inductively coupled plasma-chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD). Sharpening of the tungsten tips were carried out by electrochemical etching. Morphologies and microstructures of BN and CN films were analyzed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The electron-emission properties (such as maximum emission currents and turn-on fields) of the BN-coated and CN-coated CNT-emitters were characterized in terms of the thickness of BN and CN layers.

  • This paper describes a fabrication method of a circular diaphragm using boron etching stop method. It will be applied to acoustic transducers such as microphones or microspeakers and so on. The sensitivity is expected to be increased with the circular diaphragm through the simulation results to compare with a general rectangular diaphragm. The borondoped layer which is doped with solid source is sufficient for achieving an etching stop in 20 wt% TMAH, and the thickness is about $7.4{\mu}m$. The diameter of the circular silicon nitride diaphragm was measured to be 2 mm with $1{\mu}m$ thickness. The fabrication of piezoelectric acoustic devices was completed.
