The Ground anchor is reinforcement to resist pull-out through ground that is used supports structure. The pull-out resistance of anchor is constructed by skin friction resistance from compression borehole wall in expanded wings and bearing pressure from the ground. Especially, underreamed ground anchor is reinforcement that adopts active reinforcement to prevent deformation of ground using bearing resistance generated reaming anchorage. This study is conducted to calculate bearing resistance of underreamed ground anchor. Realistic model tests were fulfilled to determine bearing resistance of anchor, and correlate results of tests to Uniaxial Compressive Strengths (UCS) of ground models that assumed weathered rock condition in 8 case. In a comprehensive series of the tests, the bearing resistances were measured by pull-out tests. The bearing resistances derived from tests have a linear correlation with UCS. We also suggest empirical equation between bearing resistance and UCS of rocks by single linear regression analyses. In test results of this study, the bearing resistances were evaluated approximately 13 times higher than UCS of the grounds, and it is qualitatively similar to numerical values of pull-out force derived from theory.
As greater numbers of fill dams and reservoirs become old, the risks of damage or embankment collapse increases. However, few studies have considered the deterioration and hazard classification of the internal core layers of fill dams. This study reports the results of geotechnical investigations of 13 earth-cored fill dams in Korea, based on no-water borehole drilling, Standard Penetration Test, and 2D and 3D electrical resistivity surveys along with in situ and laboratory testing. High-capacity no-water boring minimized core layer disturbance while providing continuous core sample recovery. The results allow the classification of potential hazards related to the existing core layers based on both visual inspection of the recovered samples and the results of engineering surveys and tests. Four types of potential hazard are classified: locally fluidized core with a high water content, rapid water inflow to a borehole, cores with granular materials, and relatively low stiffness of core. Among these, the locally fluidized core is the most critical hazard that requires remedial action because it is related to the potential internal flow path and internal erosion. The other three hazard types are of medium importance and require careful monitoring and regular inspection. Of note, there was no correlation between age and core deterioration. The results are expected to aid the safe management and potential upgrading of aging cored fill dams.
Engineering behaviour of uplift-resisting ground anchors constructed in weathered rocks has been investigated by carrying out a series of full scale pull-out tests. The anchor was to resist uplift forces (buoyancy) associated with high groundwater table acting on the basement of a rail way station. The study has included the ultimate pull-out capacity of the anchors and shear stress transfer mechanism at the anchor-ground interface. The pull-out tests were conducted by changing bonded lengths of the anchor (2~7 m) and diameter of drilled borehole (108~165 mm) to investigate their effects on the behaviour of the anchor. The measured results showed that the ultimate capacity of the anchors was increased with an increase in the bonded length, diameter of drilled borehole as expected. The ultimate capacity of the anchors deduced from the pull-out tests ranged from 392 to 1,569 kN, depending on the above-mentioned factors. This corresponds to the interface shear strength of about 227~505 kPa. Interface shear stresses deduced from the pull-out test showed that the larger the pull-out force, the larger the mobilisation of the interface shear strength. The failure mode of the anchors heavily depended on the bonded lengths of the anchors. When the bonded length was short (2~3 m), a cone-type failure was observed, whereas when the bonded length increased (5~7 m), failure developed at the grout-ground interface.
In this study, the in situ deformation moduli, which were measured by borehole loading tests at basaltic rock masses located in the northeastern onshore and offshore and the northwestern onshore of Jeju Island, were examined in relation to RQD and RMR. The measured deformation moduli were also compared with the estimated deformation moduli from conventional empirical formulas using RQD and RMR. In addition, the measured deformation moduli were analyzed with respect to both the velocity ratio ($V_P/V_S$) and dynamic Poisson's ratio, which were obtained from the elastic wave velocities measured by velocity logging tests. As results, with only RQD, it was inappropriate to evaluate the quality of the Jeju island basaltic rock masses, which are characterized by vesicular structures, to select a measurement method of in situ deformation moduli, and to estimate the deformation moduli. On the other hand, it was desirable to evaluate the quality of the Jeju Island basaltic rock masses, and to estimate the deformation moduli by using RMR. The conventional empirical formulas using RMR overestimated the deformation moduli of the Jeju Island basaltic rock masses. There was qualitative consistency in the relation between velocity ratio and deformation moduli. To estimate appropriately the deformation moduli of the Jeju Island basaltic rock masses, empirical formulas were proposed as the function of RMR and velocity ratio, respectively.
This study shows the prediction of the engineering properties of weathered zone bearing corestones through the engineering geological surveys and the scale model test in the laboratory. The window survey and the observation on the borehole core were peformed on three natural slopes in corestones area in order to analyse the distribution pattern and the geometrical properties of corestones. Natural corestones were crushed and abrased for the scale model test into less than 5 mm in maximum-2mm in average by the scale reduction ratio based on the size of natural corestones and the specimen size. Scale model tests were carried out on soil and plaster model specimens with different corestone content ratio - 0%, 10%, 20%. The direct shear test on soils shows that shear strength is increased by the increase of corestone content ratio. The increase of cohesion is, however, more important factor to the shear strength of soil for 20% corestone content ratio due to interlocking of crushed corestone particles. The plaster model test shows a tendance of increase of UCS and modulus of elasticity with increase of corestone content. The variation ratio of specimen property by change of corestone content ratio in plaster model test was applied to in situ properties in order to estimate the properties of weathered zone bearing corestones. So it could be predicted that the increase of corestone content to 10% and to 20% produce about 18% and 30% UCS's increase respectively.

Due to various advantages such as small facilities, ease of construction and so on, the grouting technology which is widely used in construction field has developed remarkably compared with the past. However, the efforts to improve the homogeneity of quality, long-term durability and environmental problems have been continued. In recent years, new grouting method has been developed in order to solve problems such as low strength, durability and leaching phenomenon of liquid glass (sodium silicate) grouting material in Korea. A newly developed method integrates the injection material with the ground by the self-healing material of crystallization growth type. For this reason, it is known that improvement of the durability and water quality of the ground, prevention of leaching, and environment friendliness can be expected. The present study applied a newly developed method to test sites and verified its effect such as injection range, improvement effect, waterproofing performance and so on. Standard penetration test, field permeability test, borehole shear test, pressuremeter test and pH test were conducted, and the results were compared between before and after developed method application. As results of tests, the field applicability and improvement effect of developed method were proved to be excellent.

Ground source heat pump(GSHP) systems is known as environmental friendly and energy saving. Especially a ground heat exchanger is an important unit that determines the thermal performance of a system and initial cost. In design phase of vertical GSHP system, it is recommended that the effective borehole thermal resistance, be determined from in-situ thermal response test. In this study, ground effective thermal conductivity was categorized by a region. As a result of the study, the ground thermal conductivity of national average was analyzed as 2.56 W/mK. The highest regional average of thermal conductivity is 2.68 W/mK in Seoul, and the lowest is 2.28 W/mK in Busan. Also, the thermal conductivity on the coast has been analyzed approximately 30% lower than the average.
The NDT(Non-Destructive Testing) technique, detecting defects without damaging foundations, has, lately, been a matter of concern. In this study, the applicability of the borehole methods(CSL, CT, PS) and the surface reflection methods(SE, IR) to the evaluation of integrity of drilled shaft was investigated through field test. Ten drilled shafts, 0.4 m in diameter and 7.0 m long each, were constructed, one shaft with no defect and nine shafts intentionally with the combination of the common defects such as soft bottom, necking, bulging, cave-in, and/or weak concrete. Analysing each NDP test result on the constructed drilled shafts, an optimum combination of the NDP methods as well as the applicability of each NDP method to detecting defects of drilled shaft have been investigated.
In completely weathered granite gneiss,8 of 40cm cast-in-situ concrete piles are constructed, and static pile load tests are executed on the piles to study the bearing behavior of rock-socketed piles. Subsurface explorations are carried out on the test site in three phases, in which 14 borehole investigations as well as the seismic investigation are performed. Rock socketd depths of the piles in the weathered rocks are varied as 3m, 6m and 9m to separate the shaft resistance from the end bearing resistance, and for a couple of piles, styrofoam of 10cm thickness is installed under the pile point to eliminate the effect of the end resistance. Strain gages are instrumented on re-bars to pick-up the transferred loads along the pile length. From the results of the pile load tests, the allowable shaft resistance and the allowable end bearing values of weathered rocks are proposed as $8.6t/m^2\;and\; 84t/m^2$, respectively. The empirical equation relating the elastic modulus of rock mass with the uniaxial compressive strength of the rock specimen is also proposed for the weathered rocks.
The cracks induced by hydraulic rock splitting technique are formed in the direction parallel to the free plane, which is perpendicular to the minimum principal stress of the ground, or is affected by the pre-existing microcracks. In this study, the hydraulic rock splitting experiments were conducted in which the guide slot was engraved in the direction parallel to the borehole axis on the biotite granite slope, and the hydraulic pressure was injected through the double packer pressure and interval section. The test results show that the cracks along with the guide slots were induced either by the double packer pressurization or the injection of hydraulic pressure into interval section, some cracks extended across the boreholes. Therefore, the hydraulic rock splitting test is expected to control efficiently the induced cracks if the guide slots are engraved in the direction of splitting and a big flow rate is applied.
