A Study on the Current Conditions of Local Independent Bookstores and Methods to Vitalize the Bookstores : Focused on Local Independent Bookstores in Gwangju (지역 독립서점 현황 및 활성화 방안 : 광주지역을 중심으로)

  • In Korea, the independent publication market has grown since it came into existence in the 1990s. In 2008, the country's first independent bookstores selling independent publications opened. As of late 2019, there were a total of 466 independent bookstores in Korea and the number of independent bookstores rapidly increased for the last decade. However, the closing rate of independent bookstores is rapidly increasing. This trend is also shown in independent bookstores in Gwangju. Recently, the closing rate of independent bookstores in Gwangju is more than twice as high as the national average. Against this backdrop, this study intended to identify the current conditions of independent bookstores in the city, analyze the problems facing them, and find solutions. Independent bookstores in Gwangju currently make various efforts such as book curation, management of various supplementary programs, and book markets. However, the bookstores have problems including the curation and programs focused on specific areas, focus on limited generations, dependence on publications from the Seoul metropolitan area. To address these problems, this study proposed solutions such as diversifying publications through planning and developing of local contents, strengthening the taste-based salon nature, organizing networks of independent bookstores, and systematically incubating independent bookstores. At the system level, this study also suggested a need for local bookstore certification system, a complete execution of a fixed book price system, and a fair provision rate.

The Factors Affecting on Intentions to Use Online Bookstores (인터넷 서점의 이용의도에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • As students can purchase textbooks online or from local bookstores, we proposed a model to study the predictors of textbook purchasing from online bookstores based on the theory of reasoned action (TRA) and technology acceptance model (TAM). The survey instrument consisted of 51 items to assess 10 constructs of the proposed model, where the items used to measure the constructs were adapted from previous literature. Pre-testing and pilot testing of the measures were conducted by selected users of online bookstores. Data were collected from 220 university students who have purchased and intend to purchase their textbooks from online bookstores. The findings of this research are summarized as follows. First, navigation, previous experience, and innovation have a significant impact on the buyer's perception of ease of use. Second, price and delivery services have a significant impact on the buyer's perception of usefulness. Third, the perception of ease of use also has a significant impact on the buyer's perception of usefulness. Fourth, the perception of ease of use, perception of usefulness, and subjective norms all significantly support the purchasing intention in the case of online bookstores.

A Study on the Expressional Characteristics of Spaces in Bookstores based on Users' Experiences (이용자 체험에 따른 서점 공간의 표현특성 연구)

  • In recent years, as selling books on the internet becomes popular, the number of off-line bookstores are rapidly dwindling away. This change on the book market requires, the function and space of the bookstores should be defined again. Now bookstores are the places of experiences on cultures, world-views, and lifestyles around books. The study examines six large bookstores and finds three strategies of space expression as follow. First, Dominicanen bookstore in Maastricht which was built as a church has an expression which contrasts the old and the new as well as the sacred and the profane. Fangsuo bookstore in Chengdu creates a modern underground Sutra Depository. Here, people experience history and religion. Second, Cook & Book in Brussels has nine theme areas, each with a different selection of books, different interior decoration and special food and beverage like a theme park. Zhongshu bookshop in Shanghai has a lattice of nine reading rooms in which each unique design theme is characterized based on each book subject. Third, Cultura Bookstore in Sao Paulo is created to support social interchange. It leads people to the enormous plaza of books where people read books freely and participate in workshops, movies and all kinds of events. Daikanyama Tsutaya Books in Tokyo is composed of three white box-form pavilions which are connected by a 55-meter long aisle, called a magazine street. People walk along the street and choose concierge services as they browse magazines and books. The study finds out three strategies of design in current large bookstores to promote place-experience, which are the story-telling of history and culture, the design of theme parks, and openness for public mingling like plazas and streets. Thus, the study suggests a new paradigm in the design of bookstores in this internet age.

A Study on the Consumer's Importance and Satisfaction by Service Quality Factors in Online Bookstores : Focused on IPA Analysis (온라인 서점의 서비스 품질 요인에 따른 소비자 중요도 및 만족도 분석 : IPA 분석을 중심으로)

  • With the advancement of technology, the market size of online bookstores is constantly increasing in Korea. Despite the importance of the quality of services provided by online bookstores as many customers use online bookstores, many existing studies have approached only from a linear perspective that satisfying service quality factors will lead to customer satisfaction. In addition, the service quality of online bookstores has only been addressed in general and universal service situations, such as SERVQUAL and e-SERVQUAL and WebQual, or online situations. This study was conducted to consider the specificity of online bookstores and to establish specific strategies for improving service quality. In this study, we present six higher dimensions of service quality for online bookstores and 25 lower dimensions to measure it, and we confirm strategic direction for service quality elements through IPA analysis. As a result of the analysis, a total of 12 factors were included in the first quadrant, which required maintenance of service quality due to the high importance and satisfaction perceived by customers. Next, the importance of customers is high, but their satisfaction is low, so the second quadrant that should be improved first had a total of two factors. Third, the third quadrant was an area where customers perceived low importance and satisfaction, and a total of nine factors were involved. Finally, the fourth quadrant was an area where the customer was satisfied but perceived low importance, with a total of two factors. The results of this study can be used as basic data for strategic use of online service quality factors.

A Study of Classification System for Online Bookstore in Korea: Categories and Book Classification (한국 인터넷서점 분류체계 연구 - 카테고리와 도서 분류를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of the study is to investigate and analyze the categories of online bookstores and to propose improvements. For the study, the category conformity was compared among eight Korean online bookstores selected; the book classification on the categories was compared from them. The results show that the category conformity was high among online bookstores, but the book classification on the categories was different on the bookstores. ISBN contents classification codes for books might not help to classify the books on the categories. Thus, the study proposes a new publication category for the book classification on categories of online bookstores.

  • This study is about finding factors affecting user experience satisfaction in Korean local bookstores which are increasing recently. Previous researches are concentrated on the aspect of supplier. However, a study for actual users is needed to help develop bookstore industry. The local bookstores were classified into independent, professional, and complex cultural bookstores. Based on the four realms of an experience by the Experience Economy, this study analyzed the experience factors through questionnaires. As a result of study, the three most significant factors influencing experience satisfaction were identified through regression analysis. It is expected that this study may help develop the local bookstores industry in the future by concentrating on the actual experience of the user and finding out the major experience factors.

A Study on the interior environment of the children's book section in grand bookstores (대형서점의 아동서적 실내 환경에 관한 연구 - 서울지역 대형서점을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide basic guidelines for qualitatively advanced children facilities and spaces in grand bookstores. The main concept is considered with a situation that grand bookstores of large corporations are increasing in quantity, but their social missions for the user are often being connived. The study is peformed by research of current six domestic grand bookstores, two branches of each three large corporations, larger than 2,500py in Seoul, and the research is applied to Murtha's User Benefit Criteria as a basic format. As a result of the research, some problems to be improved are detected in ways of behavioral facilitation, physiological maintenance, perceptual maintenance, and social facilitation, therefore findings in survey turned out to be parents' dissatisfaction in many aspects. Finally, with this result, it is desirable for interior designers to reflect the indicated insufficient elements to their following children's bookstore space design for the user, children and their parents.

A Study on Improving a Classification for Health Categories of Internet Bookstores in Korea (국내 인터넷 서점의 건강 분야 분류체계 개선 방안에 관한 연구)

  • The purposes of this study are to analyze and compare current state of subject directories of the health field in eight internet bookstores in domestic and abroad. A comparative analysis was carried out for KDC and DDC, using names of subdivisions within the health field of internet bookstore. Also, user interviews to find their information needs about the health field in internet bookstore were conducted. And then, based upon the findings, this study proposed a design principle and a new classification for the health field of internet bookstores. With evaluations of the experts from the field, a final classification schedule (1 class, 11 division, 60 subdivision, and 16 section) was suggested. The results of this study can be used for a foundation of classifying health resources efficiently in internet bookstores and other web sites.
