Purpose: To longitudinally observe the healing process of extracted socket and the alterations of the residual ridge in healthy adult dogs using cone beam CT (CBCT). Materials and Methods: The mandibular premolars of two beagle dogs were removed and the extraction sites were covered with the gingival tissue. CBCTs (3D X-ray CT scanner, Alphard vega, Asahi Co.) were taken at baseline and at 1 week interval for 12 weeks. Radiographic density of extracted wounds was measured on normalized images with a custom-made image analysis program. The amount of alveolar crestal resorption after the teeth extraction was measured with a reformatted three-dimensional image using CBCT. Bony healing pattern of extracted wound of each group was also longitudinally observed and analyzed. Results: Dimensional changes occurred during the first 6 weeks following the extraction of dogs' mandibular premolars. The reduction of the height of residual ridge was more pronounced at the buccal than at the lingual aspect of the extraction socket. Radiographic density of extracted wounds increased by week 4, but the change in density stabilized after week 6. New bone formation was observed at the floor and the peripheral side of extracted socket from week 1. The entrance of extracted socket was sealed by a hard-tissue bridge at week 5. Conclusion: The healing process of extracted wound involved a series of events including new bone formation and residual ridge resorption.

Introduction: Research on dental bone graft material has been actively conducted. Recently, demineralized dentin matrix material has been developed and introduced. This study examined the effect of demineralized dentin matrix material on bone healing. Subjects and Methods: The patients who received no treatment after extraction were used as the control group and patients who underwent demineralized dentin matrix material application in the extraction socket after extraction were used as the experimental group. Panorama radiography was performed at the baseline and at 3.5 months after graft material placement and CT was taken at 3.5 months after graft material placement for a radiologic evaluation. Bony tissue specimens were collected from the alveolar crest in the middle of the extraction socket using a 2 mm trephine bur after 3.5 months for the histology and hostomorphometric study. Results: 1. On the panoramic view, a higher bone density was observed in the subject group. 2. On the panoramic view, the bone density increased significantly in the extraction socket, from the baseline to 3.5 months: a 7 and 10 gray-level scale was observed in the control and experimental group, respectively (P<0.05). 3. The CT view evaluation at 3.5 months revealed significantly higher bone density in the subject group than the control group (P<0.05). 4. The histological findings showed more active new bone and lamellar bone formation in the subject group. Dentin with osteoinduction ability and enamel with osteoconduction ability appeared. 5. On histomorphometric analysis, the subject group showed significantly more new bone, lamellar bone area and lower soft tissue area (P<0.05). The difference between the groups was significant (P<0.05). Conclusion: Bone healing was improved after the application of demineralized dentin matrix material and there was active new bone and lamellar bone formation.
Bone scan using radioactive isotope can be more effective than conventional X-ray radiograph for finding jaw lesion because it takes an image of the physiologic change of bone. This study is designed to show how available bone scan is able to diagnose jaw lesion better than simple X-ray and CT, as well as to determine a basis of diagnosis for jaw lesion using bone scan. The 77 patients, visiting the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Dankook University Hospital from January 2002. to August 2005. who were diagnosed histopathologically with postoperative malignant tumor, osteomyelitis, and bone infiltrative benign disease. Preoperative X-ray, CT, bone scan were taken and were compared with histopathologic finding. Also to compare specificty of each lesion in bone scan, bone density was measured to compare. The results were as follows. 1. Among the 25 cases of oral malignant tumor of bony invasion, a positive diagnosis associated with histopathologic evaluation, 22 cases(88%) in bone scan, 14 cases(56%) in CT image, and 10 cases40%) in simple X-ray. 2. Among the 31 cases of osteomyelitis, a positive diagnosis associated with histopathologic evaluation, 30 cases(97%) in bone scan, 23 cases(74%) in CT image, and 19 cases(61%) in simple X-ray. 3. Among the 11cases of bone infiltrative benign disease, a positive diagnosis associated with histopathologic evaluation, 11 cases(100%) in bone scan, 10 cases(91%) in CT image, and 6 cases(55%) in simple X-ray. 4. Measurement of bone density in each group showed no statistical significant difference between malignant tumor and osteomyelitis as well as benign bone disease. But, a statistical significance was seen between osteomyelitis and benign bone disease. From this results, bone scan are more sensitive than simple X-ray and CT image in jaw lesion diagnosis, but specificity shows no significant difference. Therefore, it should be suggested that evaluation of bone scan must be carrying out in reference to final histopathologic diagnosis.

The authors observed a patient who referred to the Department of Oral Radiology, due to diffuse skeletal pain, muscular weakness and unknown tumor mass on the buccal gingiva of upper right molar region. The patient was found to have peripheral reparative giant cell granuloma and osteomalacia. After removal of the tumor, the clinical, radiologic, and laboratory findings of the patient was rapidly normalized with remarkable improvement of bone pain. The results were as follows: 1. After removal of the tumor, the patient improved. the clinical findings such as bone pain, trismus. muscular weakness and he could walk. 2. In postoperative x-ray findings at 1 and 2 months intervals, the lamina dura of all dentition and bony trabeculae in upper and lower arches were regenerating and the bone density increased. 3. In periodic recall check, no occurrence of osteomalacia was existed and the laboratory findings of the patient showed gradual improvement.
For the purpose of investigating the response of the periodontal tissue in relation to the experimental tooth movement, the rats were inhibited from collagen formation by adminstration of aminoacetonitrile. Findings were as follows: 1) In experimental group, the principal fibers of the periodontal ligament came to run parallel along the alveolar bone or root surface on the pressure side, while the decrease in density, irregular arrangement, and partial loss of principal fibers were observed on the tension side. 2) Sharpey's fibers at the alveolar bone decreased in number, and as the aminoacetonitrile administration continued, the capability of matrix formation decreased on the tension side, the narrowing of the alveolar septum and poor-bony trabeculation appeared on the pressure side. 3) In cementum, Sharpey's fibers were distributed irregularly. The formation of acellura cementum was decreased on the tension side, while the formative capability of cellular cementum was increased. 4) The degree of staining by Herovici technique decreased in the periodontal membrane. By PAS and ninhydrine -Schiff reaction it was appeared weakly positive in the region where the Sharpey's fibers existed.
Osteochondroma is a common bone tumor but a rare tumor in the rib. It is often asymptomatic and observed incidentally. This is a case report of a 49-year-old woman with an osteochondroma mimicking a mediastinal mass in hereditary multiple exostoses. The chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) scans revealed the bony density feature of the mass. Surgical excision confirmed that the lesion was an osteochondroma.
Recently, for the reconstruction of bony defect and cosmetic improvement, many graft materials and implants have been widely used in the various surgical situations. The alloplastic materials have many advantages such as simplicity of operation, no additional need of surgery, and easy manipulation. The $Medpor^{TM}$(porous high-density polyethylene, Porex Co., USA) was initially studied in 1972 for surgical implant and introduced as an implant material for oral and maxillofacial region by Sauer and King in 1988. This material permits full ingrowth of bone into the implants, substantially increasing the implant's incorporation into the recipient site. It can be shaved during the surgery, which results in an improvement and prefabricated various size and shapes to fit into the surgical defect. The $Medpor^{TM}$ was used in 32 patients from 1995 to 1997 at the maxillofacial region. It was used for paranasal augmentation in 24 cases, for malar augmentation in 2 cases, for infraorbital augmentation in 2 cases, for mandibular angle augmentation in 2 cases, for mandibular body augmentation in 2 cases, for chin vertical augmentation in 1 case. It was mainly fixed with miniplate or screw. There were few complications except one infection and one exposure of the implant.
Purpose: To evaluate the knee joint after double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with three-dimensional (3D) isotropic magnetic resonance (MR) image, and to directly compare the ACL graft findings on 3D MR with the clinical results. Materials and Methods: From January 2009 to December 2014, we retrospectively reviewed MRIs of 39 patients who had reconstructed ACL with double bundle technique. The subjects were examined using 3D isotropic proton-density sequence and routine two-dimensional (2D) sequence on 3.0T scanner. The MR images were qualitatively evaluated for the intraarticular curvature, graft tear, bony impingement, intraosseous tunnel cyst, and synovitis of anteromedial and posterolateral bundles (AMB, PLB). In addition anterior tibial translation, PCL angle, PCL ratio were quantitatively measured. KT arthrometric values were reviewed for anterior tibial translation as positive or negative. The second look arthroscopy results including tear and laxity were reviewed. Results: Significant correlations were found between an AMB tear on 3D-isotropic proton density MR images and arthroscopic proven AMB tear or laxity (P < 0.05). Also, a significant correlation was observed between increased PCL ratio on 3D isotropic MRI and the arthroscopic findings such as tear, laxities of grafts (P < 0.05). KT arthrometric results were found to be significantly correlated with AMB tears (P < 0.05) and tibial tunnel cysts (P < 0.05). Conclusion: An AMB tear on 3D-isotropic MRI was correlated with arthroscopic results qualitatively and quantitatively. 3D isotropic MRI findings can aid the evaluation of ACL grafts after double bundle reconstruction.
Authors was experienced a case of mucocele in the left frontal sinus. A 24-years-old Korean male soldier was admitted to C.A.F.G.H. on 16th May 1980, with chief complaints of dull headache, exophthalmos, visual disturbance and intermittent epistaxis on the left side. On physical examination, left turbinates and septum were revealed hyperemic middle turbinate with blood tinged spots and deviated slightly to right side, and felt round, smooth, rubbery painless swelling within the orbit at the left inner canthus. The left orbital contents was displaced laterally producing proptosis with diplopia. On the radiological examination, Caldwell and Water's view showed hazy density in medial side of left orbital and left frontal sinus. Tomography of orbit showed hazy increased mass density with rather sharply defined outer margin of left bony orbit probably due to compressive erosion. The case was treated with surgical removal of the Lynch frontal approach, so present this case with a brief review of the literature.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether cyst enucleation would be done after marsupialization of large cystic lesion on the jaws or not, and if so, when it should be done. Patients & Methods: 12 patients with cystic lesion treated by marsupialization only and 10 patients with cystic lesion treated by marsupialization followed by enucleation were examined in this study. Postoperative clinical and radiographic examinations were performed at 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19 months on 22 patients. Bone regeneration and reduction rate of the residual cystic cavities and bone density were evaluated with a analysis of digital panoramic radiographs. Also histological evaluation of the healing process was performed on 1 patient. Results: Uneventful healing and spontaneous bony filling of the residual cavities were observed in all cases. Postoperative radiographs showed that the size of the lesions was reduced for a few months, but the reduction rate of the residual cavity was minimized for 13~16 months after marsupialization. The bone density was increased 22.5 % after 19 months. Conclusion: This results suggest that the appropriate timing to perform enucleation would be 13~16 months after marsupialization. The state of healing process could be confirmed by histological examination and radiographic evaluation of bone density. Enucleation after marsupialization could be applied appropriately to reduce the periods of bone healing in large cystic lesion on the jaws.
