Recently, the external bonding of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets has come to be regarded as a very effective method for strengthening of reinforced concrete structures. The behavior of CFRP-strengthened RC structure is mainly governed by the interfacial behavior, which represents the stress transfer and relative slip between concrete and the CFRP sheet. In this study, the effects of bonded length, width and concrete strength on the interfacial behavior are verified and a bond-slip model is proposed. The proposed bond-slip model has nonlinear ascending regions and exponential descending regions, facilitated by modifying the conventional bilinear bond-slip model. Finite element analysis results of interface element implemented with bond-slip model have shown good agreement with the experimental results performed in this study. It is found that the failure load and strain distribution predicted by finite element analysis with the proposed bond-slip are in good agreement with results of experiments.

The use of hybrid FRP-concrete structures with a dual purpose of both permanent formwork and reinforcement, has been considered in some studies recently. For the FRP plank and the concrete to act as a composite structural member a satisfactory bond at the interface between the smooth surface of the pultruded plank and the cast-in-place concrete must be developed. Sand was bonded to the pultruded FRP plank using a commercially available epoxy system. In applying general analysis techniques to evaluate the performance of composite structures with FRP stay-in-place forming, it is essential that characteristics of the bond stress-slip relation be identified. In this study I would like to propose a simplified bilinear bond stress-slip model for FRP composite structures.

Buildings become high and large. CFT(Concrete Filled steel Tube) columns have been developed to manage effectively that loads which columns support and cross sections of columns are increased. Because CFT column is the composite structure made of two different materials, many researches have been performed to look into mechanical behaviors. This study is an analytic study about bond stress on interface between concrete core and steel tube in circular and rectangular CFT columns. ABAQUS/Standard Version 5.8 is used to analyze bond stress by bond form and position of shear-connector, and improved analystic method about mechanical characters on interface is suggested.
Recently, it is increased the use of High-Strength Light-Weight Concrete(HLC) in the high-rise buildings and mega-structures. But there are a few research on the bond behavior of HLC, so it need to study about that. The present study was performed to investigate the bond characteristics of HLC. Major test variables include concrete compressive strength(f'c), concrete cover(c), bond length (${\ell}_{db}$), and bar diameter($d_b$). Test results indicate that the bond stress of HLC is increased with the increment of $\sqrt{f'_c}$ and concrete cover, bond stress is decreased with increment of bond length and bar diameter. And the final failure mode such as splitting or pullout failure is significantly affected by the concrete cover to bar diameter ratios(C/$d_b$). Test results were compared with ACI code and other proposed equations. The bond stress of HLC is higher than that of normal-strength normal-weight concrete, but lower than that of high-strength normal-weight concrte. Considering the present test results, modification factor(${\lambda}$= 1.3) of bond length in ACI 318-95 code for light-weight concrete is may have to be reviewed to apply to HLC.
Bearing capacity of pile foundations in cold region is dominated by adfreeze bond strength between surrounding soil and pile perimeter. Adfreeze bond strength is considered to be the most important design parameter for foundations in cold region. Many studies in last 50 years have been conducted to analyze characteristics of adfreeze bond strength. However, most studies have been performed under constant temperature and normal stress conditions in order to analyze affecting factors like soil type, pile material, loading speed, etc. In this study, both freezing temperature and normal stress acting on pile surface were considered to be primary factors affecting adfreeze bond strength, while other factors such as soil type, pile material and loading speed were predefined. Direct shear box was used to measure adfreeze bond strength between Joomoonjin sand and aluminium because it is easy to work for various roughness. Test was performed with temperatures of > $0^{\circ}C$, $-1^{\circ}C$, $-2^{\circ}C$, $-5^{\circ}C$, and $-10^{\circ}C$ and vertical confining pressures of 1atm, 2atm, and 3atm. Based on the test results, the effects of temperature and vertical stress on adfreeze bond strength were analyzed. The test results showed that adfreeze bond strength increases with decreased temperature and increased vertical stress. It was also noted that two types of distinct sections exist, owing to the rate of increase of adfreeze bond strength along the change of freezing temperature: 1)rapidly increasing section and 2)gradually decreasing section. In addition, the results showed that a main factor affecting adfreeze bond strength switches from friction angle to adhesion as freezing temperature decreases.

The effect of thermal cycling on bond strength and residual stress at the interface between benzocyclobutene (BCB) and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposited (PECVD) silicon dioxide ($SiO_2$) coated silicon wafers were evaluated by four point bending and wafer curvature techniques. Wafers were bonded using a pre-established baseline process. Thermal cycling was done between room temperature and a maximum peak temperature. In thermal cycling performed with 350 and $400^{\circ}C$ peak temperature, the bond strength increased substantially during the first thermal cycle. The increase in bond strength is attributed to the relaxation in residual stress by the condensation reaction of the PECVD $SiO_2$: this relaxation leads to increases in deformation energy due to residual stress and bond strength.
Zirconia coatings are performed by the plasma spraying on the substrate of Al-Si alloy. In case of plasma sprayed ceramic coatings, it is important to control properly residual stress occurred during cooling process. Residual stress in coating layer varies with sprayed conditions and is influenced greatly by the coating layer thickness. Surface residual stress due to coating layer thickness is measured by X-ray diffraction method and the residual stress in coating layer is estimated by the deflection of coating layer when the restraint force in substrate was removed. When zirconia was coated on the substrate, tensile residual stress remains on zirconia coated surface layer. The tensile stress is increased to 0.35mm thickness and after 0.45mm thickness it is decreased abrouptly. A thick bond and composite coating reduce the zirconia surface stress and composite coating controls effectively the thick zirconia surface stress.

Steel plates and carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates or plates bonded to concrete substrates have been widely used for concrete strengthening. However, this technique cause plate debonding, which makes the strengthening system inefficient. The main objective of this study is to enhance the bond strength of externally bonded steel plates and CFRP laminates to the concrete surface by proposing new embedded adhesive and steel connectors. The effects of these new embedded connectors were investigated through the tests on 36 prism specimens. Parameters such as interfacial shear stress, fracture energy and the maximum strains in plates were also determined in this study and compared with the maximum value of debonding stresses using a relevant failure criterion by means of pullout test. The study indicates that the interfacial bond strength between the externally bonded plates and concrete can be increased remarkably by using these connectors. The investigation verifies that steel connectors increase the shear bond strength by 48% compared to 38% for the adhesive connectors. Thus, steel connectors are more effective than adhesive connectors in increasing shear bond strength. Results also show that the use of double connectors significantly increases interfacial shear stress and decrease debonding failure. Finally, a new proposed formula is modified to predict the maximum bond strength of steel plates and CFRP laminates adhesively glued to concrete in the presence of the embedded connectors.
A tendon model that can effectively be used in finite element analyses of prestressed concrete (PSC) structures with bonded tendons is proposed on the basis of the bond characteristics between a tendon and its surrounding concrete. Since tensile forces between adjacent cracks are transmitted from a tendon to concrete by bond forces, the constitutive law of a bonded tendon stiffened by grouting is different from that of a bare tendon. Accordingly, the apparent yield stress of an embedded tendon is determined from the bond-slip relationship. The definition of the multi-linear average stress-strain relationship is then obtained through a linear interpolation of the stress difference at the post-yielding stage. Unlike in the case of a bonded tendon, on the other hand, a stress increase beyond the effective prestress in an unbonded tendon is not section-dependent but member-dependent. The tendon stress unequivocally represents a uniform distribution along the length when the friction loss is excluded. Thus, using a strain reduction factor, the modified stress-strain curve of an unbonded tendon is derived by successive iterations. The validity of the proposed two tendon models is verified through correlation studies between analytical and experimental results for PSC beams and slabs.
This paper presents a nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete column with lap splice confined by FRP wrapping in the critical hinging zone. The steel stress-slip model derived from the tri-uniform bond stress model presented in the companion paper is included in the nonlinear frame analysis to simulate the response of reinforced concrete columns subjected to cyclic displacement reversals. The nonlinear modeling is based on a fiber discretization of an RC column section. Each fiber is modeled as either nonlinear concrete or steel spring, whose load-deformation characteristics are calculated from the section of fiber and material properties. The steel spring that models the reinforcing bars consists of three sub-springs, i.e., steel bar sub-spring, lap splice spring, and anchorage bond-slip spring connected in series from top to bottom. By combining the steel stress versus slip of the lap splice, the stress-deformation of steel bar and the steel stress-slip of bars anchored into the footing, the nonlinear steel spring model is derived. The analytical responses are found to be close to experimental ones. The analysis without lap splice springs included may result in an erroneous overestimation in the strength and ductility of columns.
