  • The seismic performance of steel beam to concrete-encased composite column with unsymmetrical steel section joints is investigated and reported within this paper. Experimental and analytical evaluation were conducted on a total of 8 specimens with T-shaped and L-shaped steel section under lateral cyclic loading and axial compression. The test parameters included concrete strength, stirrup ratio and axial compression ratio. The response of the specimens was presented in terms of their hysterisis loop behavior, stress distribution, joint shear strength, and performance degradation. The experiment indicated good structural behavior and good seismic performance. In addition, a three-dimensional nonlinear finite-element analysis simulating was conducted to simulate their seismic behaviors. The finite-element analysis incorporated both bond-slip relationship and crack interface interaction between steel and concrete. The results were also compared with the test data, and the analytical prediction of joint shear strength was satisfactory for both joints with T-shaped and L-shaped steel section columns. The steel beam to concrete-encased composite column with unsymmetrical steel section joints can develop stable hysteretic response and large energy absorption capacity by providing enough stirrups and decreased spacing of transverse ties in column.

  • This paper presents the results of experimental and numerical model analyses on partially encased composite columns under concentric loads. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of replacing the conventional longitudinal and transverse steel bars by welded wire mesh on the structural behavior of these members under concentric loads. To achieve these goals experimental tests on four specimens of partially encased composite columns submitted to axial loading were performed and the results were promising in terms of replacing the traditional reinforcement by steel meshes. In addition, a numerical FE model was developed using the software DIANA$^{(R)}$ with FX+. The experimental results were used to validate the numerical model. Satisfactory agreement between experimental and numerical results was observed in both capacity and deformability of the composite columns. Despite of the simplifying assumptions of perfect bond between steel and concrete, the numerical model adequately represented the columns behavior. A finite element parametric study was performed and parameters including thickness of the steel profile and the concrete and steel strengths were evaluated. The parametrical study results found no significant changes in the partially encased columns behavior due to variations of the steel profile thickness or yield strength. However, significant changes in the post peak behavior were observed when using high strength concrete and these results suggest a change in the failure mode.

  • In this work, an experimental research has been performed on Steel Fiber-Steel Reinforced Concrete (SFSRC)specimens subjected to four-point bending tests to evaluate the feasibility of mutual replacement of steel fibers and conventional reinforcement through studying failure modes, load-deflection curves, stiffness of characteristic points, stiffness degradation curves and damage analysis. The variables considered in this experiment included steel fiber volume percentage with and without conventional reinforcements (stirrups or steel fibers) with shear span depth ratios of S/D=2.5 and 3.5. Experimental results revealed that increasing the volume percentage of steel fiber decreased the creation and propagation of shear and bond cracks, just like shortening the stirrups spacing. Higher crack resistance and suturing ability of steel fiber can improve the stability of its bearing capacity. Both steel fibers and stirrups improved the stiffness and damage resistance of specimens where stirrups played an essential role and therefore, the influence of steel fibers was greatly weakened. Increasing S/D ratio also weakened the effect of steel fibers. An equation was derived to calculate the bending stiffness of SFSRC specimens, which was used to determine mid span deflection; the accuracy of the proposed equation was proved by comparing predicted and experimental results.

  • This paper investigates earthquake response of reinforced concrete regular frames subjected to rebar corrosion. A typical four-story reinforced concrete frame is designed according to Turkish Earthquake Code in order to examine earthquake response. Then different levels of rebar corrosion scenarios are applied to this frame structure. The deteriorated conditions as a result of these scenarios are included loss in cross sectional area of rebar, loss of mechanical properties of rebar, loss in bond strength and variations in damage limits of concrete sections. The frame is evaluated using a nonlinear static analysis in its sound as well as deteriorated conditions. The rebar corrosion effect on the structural response is investigated by comparing the response of the frame in each scenario with respect to the sound condition of the frame. The results shows that the progressive deterioration of the frame over time cause serious reductions on the base shear and top displacement capacity and also structural ductility of the corroded frames. The propagation time, intensity, and extensity of rebar corrosion on the frame are important parameters governing the effect of rebar corrosion on earthquake response of the frame.

  • Carbon-11 is one of the most sensitive and desirable positron emission tomography radio-isotope, which offers the capacity to be incorporated, through a covalent bond, into biologically active molecules without altering their biological properties. Carbon-11 can be obtained from the cyclotron with two different chemical forms: $[^{11}C]CO_2$ and $[^{11}C]CH_4$. [$^{11}C$]Methyl iodide has been widely used as a highly reactive labelling precursor that can be applied to label carbon-11 with biologically active molecules via alkylation of N-, O-, or S-nucleophiles. A more recent and still challenging labeling method is transition metal mediated $^{11}C$-carbonylation. Advances in organic chemistry, radiochemistry and improved automated techniques greatly encourage researchers to develop more carbon-11 labelled radiotracers for molecular imaging studies. This mini-review will introduce a historical track of carbon-11 chemistry combining with examples and its role in near future.

  • Because the elevated temperature degrades the mechanical properties of materials used in containments, the global behavior of containments subjected to the internal pressure under high temperature is remarkably different from that subjected to the internal pressure only. This paper concentrates on the nonlinear finite element analyses of the nuclear power plant containment structures, and the importance for the consideration of the elevated temperature effect has been emphasized because severe accident usually accompanies internal high pressure together with a high temperature increase. In addition to the consideration of nonlinear effects in the containment structure such as the tension stiffening and bond-slip effects, the change in material properties under elevated temperature is also taken into account. This paper, accordingly, focuses on the three-dimensional nonlinear analyses with thermal effects. Upon the comparison of experiment data with numerical results for the SNL 1/4 PCCV tested by internal pressure only, three-dimensional analyses for the same structure have been performed by considering internal pressure and temperature loadings designed for two kinds of severe accidents of Saturated Station Condition (SSC) and Station Black-out Scenario (SBO). Through the difference in the structural behavior of containment structures according to the addition of temperature loading, the importance of elevated temperature effect on the ultimate resisting capacity of PCCV has been emphasized.

  • Collision-induced dissociation of peptides involves a series of proton-transfer reactions in the activated peptide. To describe the kinetics of energy-variable dissociation, we considered the heat capacity of the peptide and the Marcus-theory-type proton-transfer rate. The peptide ion was activated to the high internal energy states by collision with a target gas in the collision cell. The mobile proton in the activated peptide then migrated from the most stable site to the amide oxygen and subsequently to the amide nitrogen (N-protonated) of the peptide bond to be broken. The N-protonated intermediate proceeded to the product-like complex that dissociated to products. Previous studies have suggested that the proton-transfer equilibria in the activated peptide affect the dissociation kinetics. To take the extent of collisional activation into account, we assumed a soft-sphere collision model, where the relative collision energy was fully available to the internal excitation of a collision complex. In addition, we employed a Marcus-theory-type rate equation to account for the proton-transfer equilibria. Herein, we present results from the integrated thermochemical approach using a tryptic peptide of ubiquitin.

  • Prussian blue (PB) is known to be an effective material for radioactive cesium adsorption, but its nano-range size make it difficult to be applied for contaminated water remediation. In this study, a simple and versatile approach to immobilize PB in the supporting matrix via surface functionalization was investigated. The commercially available poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) sponge was functionalized by acrylic acid (AA) to change its major functional group from hydroxyl to carboxylic, which provides a stronger ionic bond with PB. The amount of AA added was optimized by evaluating the weight change rate and iron(III) ion adsorption test. The FTIR results revealed the surface functional group changing to a carboxyl group. The surface functionalization enhanced the attachment of PB, which minimized the leaching out of PB. The $Cs^+$ adsorption capacity significantly increased due to surface functionalization from 1.762 to 5.675 mg/g. These findings showed the excellent potential of the PB-PAA-PVA sponge as a cesium adsorbent as well as a versatile approach for various supporting materials containing the hydroxyl functional group.

  • A small domestic solar water heating system in thermosyphonic flow was tested in Seoul. The system consisted of four flat plate aluminium roll bond type collectors of total effective area $3.28m^2$ and a $280{\iota}$ storage tank. It was tilted $52^{\circ}$ relative to the horizon. And the collector plate, collector tube and storage tank were equiped with 14 thermocouples. As the results, the following facts were found; 1) To provide water at $55^{\circ}C$ for a family of four in Seoul, a collector area of $3-4m^2$ and a storage capacity of $180{\iota}- 200{\iota}$ are suggested. And this system can supply hot water at above $45^{\circ}C$ day about. 2) In the late afternoon hours, it might be advantageous to stop the flow in the system as heat losses to the environment increase unduly. 3) Without any hot water consumption throughout the day, water temperature distributions inside the storage tank was found almost linear. This indicates essentially no mixing inside the storage tank. 4) In case of a small domestic solar water heating system, it is better to employ a single transparent cover rather than double one.
