Purpose: This study aimed to compare the shear bond strength between zirconia cores and veneer ceramics as per the sand blasting and liner treatments. Methods: The following 4 groups of zirconia-veneering ceramic specimens were prepared: (1) Group I, untreated; (2) Group II, with 110 ㎛ aluminium oxide (Al2O3) sandblasting; (3) Group III, with liner (IPS e.max ZirLiner; Ivoclar Vivadent); and (4) Group IV, with 110 ㎛ Al2O3 sand blasting and liner. Surface roughness was measured for all the prepared specimens, and the surface morphology was observed using a scanning electron microscope. All the samples (n=40) were fixed with measuring jigs, and shear bond strengths were obtained using a universal testing machine with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. The shear bond strength data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and t-test. The post hoc comparison was performed using the Tukey's test (α=0.05). Results: A significant difference in the surface roughness was observed between the specimens of groups I and II (p<0.05). Surface treatment with liner and sandblasting showed higher shear bond strength between zirconia core and veneering ceramic (p<0.05). Conclusion: The sand blasting and liner treatment increased the shear bond strength between zirconia core and veneering ceramic.
This study aimed to mix and test mortar incorporating activated Hwangtoh to improve the Hwangtoh brick bond strength of brick structures. To do this, the bond strength correlation of mortar was analyzed by means of materials and experiment factors and levels, and the optimum conditions were suggested after analyzing the physical properties of brick and the mix ratio of mortar and additive. Furthermore, the compressive strength and bond strength were found to be in inverse proportion, and in terms of the materials and mixing level, W/C ratio, substitution ratio of activated Hwangtoh, and fine aggregate grading were shown to have a considerable influence on the strength. In conclusion, the optimum mixing conditions to improve the bond strength are found to set W/C ratio at 65% and replacmenet ratio of activated Hwangtoh at 10%.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the bond strength and corrosion resistance of coated reinforcing bar using hybrid-type polymer cement slurry(PCS). PCS coated steels, which is made from two types of polymer dispersions such as St/BA and EVA are prepared, and tested for bond strength and various corrosion resistances such as autoclaved cure, carbonation and H2SO4 solution. From the test results, the bond strength of PCS coated reinforcing bar using ordinary portland cement at 1-5, 2-1 and 4-5 of mixes is higher than that of uncoated regular steel. However, bond strength of almost PCS coated reinforcing bars using ultra rapid high strength cement is higher than that of epoxy coated bar, is also in ranges of 102% to 123% compared to that of uncoated regular steel. In autoclaved accelerating test, the ratio of corrosion of uncoated regular steel is increased with the increase in NaCl content, but the corrosion of PCS coated steel was very small. In the acceleration test for carbonation, increasing the amount of NaCl the corrosion of coated steel did not produce. The corrosion of uncoated regular steel is increased with the increase in the amount of NaCl. It can be seen that the NaCl following the acceleration test for carbonation can lower the corrosion resistance of concrete. As a result, the corrosion of steel largely is affected by the acceleration curing, chloride ion penetration and carbonation and shown more severe corrosion by applying complex factors. These corrosions of steel can be suppressed by the coating of PCS.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in vitro shear bond strengths to enamel and the failure sites of three ceramic brackets and one metal bracket in combination with light cured orthodontic adhesive. The brackets were divided into four groups. Each ceramic bracket group had different bonding mechanisms with adhesive. Group A; metal bracket with foil-mesh base (control group) Group B; ceramic bracket with micromechanical retention Group C; ceramic bracket with chemical bonding Group D; ceramic bracket with mechanical retention and chemical bonding. Forty extracted human lower first premolars were prepared for bonding and 10 brackets for each group were bonded to prepared enamel surfaces with $Transbond^{\circledR}$ light cured ortho dontic adhesive. Twenty four hours after bonding, the Instron universal testing machine was used to test the shear bond strength of brackets to enamel. After debonding, brackets and enamel surfaces were examined under stereoscopic microscope to determine the failure sites, Statistical analysis of the data was carried out with ANOVA test and $Scheff\acute{e}$ test using SPSS PC+. The results were as follows. 1 . There were statistically significant differences in mean shear bond strengths of three ceramic bracket groups (p < 0.05). Shear bond strengths of group C and D were significantly higher than that of group B and shear bond strength of group C was significantly higher than that of group D. 2. Group C and D both had significantly higher shear bond strengths than metal bracket (group A), but there were no significant differences in shear bond strengths between group A and B (p < 0.05). 3. The failure sites of four bracket groups were also different. Group C and D failed primarily at enamel-adhesive interface, but group A and B failed primarily at bracket base-adhesive interface. 4. Among all ceramic bracket groups, group B was very similar to metal bracket in the aspect of shear bond strength and failure site.
PURPOSE. To investigate the microtensile bond strength between two all-ceramic systems; lithium disilicate glass ceramic and zirconia core ceramics bonded with their corresponding glass veneers. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Blocks of core ceramics (IPS e.max$^{(R)}$ Press and Lava$^{TM}$ Frame) were fabricated and veneered with their corresponding glass veneers. The bilayered blocks were cut into microbars; 8 mm in length and $1mm^2$ in cross-sectional area (n = 30/group). Additionally, monolithic microbars of these two veneers (IPS e.max$^{(R)}$ Ceram and LavaTM Ceram; n = 30/group) were also prepared. The obtained microbars were tested in tension until fracture, and the fracture surfaces of the microbars were examined with fluorescent black light and scanning electron microscope (SEM) to identify the mode of failure. One-way ANOVA and the Dunnett's T3 test were performed to determine significant differences of the mean microtensile bond strength at a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS. The mean microtensile bond strength of IPS e.max$^{(R)}$ Press/IPS e.max$^{(R)}$ Ceram ($43.40{\pm}5.51$ MPa) was significantly greater than that of Lava$^{TM}$ Frame/Lava$^{TM}$ Ceram ($31.71{\pm}7.03$ MPa)(P<.001). Fluorescent black light and SEM analysis showed that most of the tested microbars failed cohesively in the veneer layer. Furthermore, the bond strength of Lava$^{TM}$ Frame/Lava$^{TM}$ Ceram was comparable to the tensile strength of monolithic glass veneer of Lava$^{TM}$ Ceram, while the bond strength of bilayered IPS e.max$^{(R)}$ Press/IPS e.max$^{(R)}$ Ceram was significantly greater than tensile strength of monolithic IPS e.max$^{(R)}$ Ceram. CONCLUSION. Because fracture site occurred mostly in the glass veneer and most failures were away from the interfacial zone, microtensile bond test may not be a suitable test for bonding integrity. Fracture mechanics approach such as fracture toughness of the interface may be more appropriate to represent the bonding quality between two materials.
PURPOSE. The aim of the present study was to record the metal-ceramic bond strength of a feldspathic dental porcelain and a Co-Cr alloy, using the Direct Metal Laser Sintering technique (DMLS) for the fabrication of metal substrates. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ten metal substrates were fabricated with powder of a dental Co-Cr alloy using DMLS technique (test group) in dimensions according to ISO 9693. Another ten substrates were fabricated with a casing dental Co-Cr alloy using classic casting technique (control group) for comparison. Another three substrates were fabricated using each technique to record the Modulus of Elasticity (E) of the used alloys. All substrates were examined to record external and internal porosity. Feldspathic porcelain was applied on the substrates. Specimens were tested using the three-point bending test. The failure mode was determined using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The statistical analysis was performed using t-test. RESULTS. Substrates prepared using DMLS technique did not show internal porosity as compared to those produced using the casting technique. The E of control and test group was $222{\pm}5.13GPa$ and $227{\pm}3GPa$, respectively. The bond strength was $51.87{\pm}7.50MPa$ for test group and $54.60{\pm}6.20MPa$ for control group. No statistically significant differences between the two groups were recorded. The mode of failure was mainly cohesive for all specimens. CONCLUSION. Specimens produced by the DMLS technique cover the lowest acceptable metal-ceramic bond strength of 25 MPa specified in ISO 9693 and present satisfactory bond strength for clinical use.
This paper aims to study the local bond stress-slip behavior of reinforcing bars embedded in lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC). The experimental variables of the local bond stress-slip tests include concrete strength (20, 40 and 60 MPa), deformed steel bar size (#4, #6 and #8) and coarse aggregate (normal weight aggregate, reservoir sludge lightweight aggregate and waterworks sludge lightweight aggregate). The test results show that the ultimate bond strength increased with the increase of concrete compressive strength. Moreover, the larger the rib height to the diameter ratio ($h/d_b$) of the deformed steel bars is, the greater the ultimate bond stress is. In addition, the suggestion value of the CEB-FIP Model Code to the LWAC specimen's ultimate bond stress is more conservative than that of the normal weight concrete.

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate the bond strength of RelyX Unicem (3M) to root canal dentin when used as an endodontic sealer. Materials and Methods: Samples of 24 single-rooted teeth were prepared with Gates Glidden drills and K3 files. After that, the roots were randomly assigned to three experimental groups (n = 8) according to the filling material, (1) AH Plus (Dentsply De Trey GmbH)/Gutta-Percha cone; (2) Epiphany SE (Pentron)/Resilon cone; (3) RelyX Unicem/Gutta-Percha cone. All roots were filled using a single cone technique associated to vertical condensation. After the filling procedures, each tooth was prepared for a push-out bond strenght test by cutting 1 mm-thick root slices. Loading was performed on a universal testing machine at a speed of 0.5 mm/min. One-way analysis of variance and Tukey test for multiple comparisons were used to compare the results among the experimental groups. Results: Epiphany SE/Resilon showed significantly lower push-out bond strength than both AH Plus/Gutta-Percha and RelyX Unicem/Gutta-Percha (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in bond strength between AH Plus/Gutta-Percha and RelyX Unicem/Gutta-Percha (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Under the present in vitro conditions, bond strength to root dentin promoted by RelyX Unicem was similar to AH Plus. Epiphany SE/Resilon resulted in lower bond strength values when compared to both materials.
The microstructure and bond strength are examined on the SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel joints brazed by the Ag-Ti based alloys with different Ti contents. In the SiC/SiC brazed joints, the thickness of the reaction layers at the bond interface and the Ti particles in the brazing alloy matrices increase with Ti contents. When Ti is added up to 9 at% in the brazing alloy. $Ti_3SiC_2$ phase in addition to TiC and $Ti_5Si_3$ phase is newly created at the bond interface and TiAg phase is produced from peritectic reaction in the brazing alloy matrix. In the SiC/mild steel joints brazed with different Ti contents, the microstructure at the bond interface and in the brazing alloy matrix near SiC varies similarly to the case of SiC/SiC brazed joints. But, in the brazing alloy matrix near the mild steel, Fe-Ti intermetallic compounds are produced and increased with Ti contents. The bond strengths of the SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel brazed joints are independent on Ti contents in the brazing alloy. There are no large differences of the bond strength between SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel brazed joints. In the SiC/mild steel brazed joints, Fe dissolved from the mild steel does not affect on the bond strength of the joints. Thermal contraction of the mild steel has nearly no effects on the bond strength due to the wide brazing gap of specimens used in the four-point bend test. The brazed joints has the average bond strength of about 200 MPa independently on Ti contents, Fe dissolution and joint type. Fracture in four-point bend test initiates at the interface between SiC and TiC reaction layer and propagates through SiC bulk. The adhesive strength between SiC and TiC reaction layer seems to mainly control the bond strength of the brazed joints.
