Objective: This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of grain-based pecking blocks on productivity and welfare status at two commercial broiler welfare-certified farms. Methods: Production and welfare indicators were assessed at two farms (designated Farm A and B). Both farms had two windowless houses with forced tunnel-type ventilation and housed broilers at stocking densities of approximately 16.7 birds/m2 (Farm A) and 16.8 birds/m2 (Farm B). Each house was divided into two or three equal sections and was provided with or without pecking blocks. Grain-based pecking blocks, measuring 25 × 25 × 25 cm, were given to broilers in both farms at 1 block per 1,000 birds. Various parameters including productivity (body weight and flock uniformity), corticosterone levels (in fecal droppings and feathers), footpad dermatitis, hock burn, feather dirtiness, gait score, litter quality, body surface temperature, and volatile fatty acids in fecal samples were assessed at 26 days of age, whereas litter quality was analyzed at 13 and 26 days of age. Results: There were no significant effects of providing pecking blocks on productivity (body weight and uniformity), fecal and feather corticosterone, welfare indicators (i.e., footpad dermatitis, hock burn, feather cleanliness, and gait score), and litter quality (i.e., moisture, nitrogen, and pH). No differences in body surface temperature between the control and enrichment treatments were noted in Farm B, but body surface temperatures of the head (p = 0.029) and legs (p = 0.011) in the enrichment vs. control group were elevated in Farm A. Butyrate concentration in the enrichment vs control group was higher in Farm B (p = 0.023), but this effect was not detected in Farm A. Conclusion: It is concluded that grain-based pecking blocks did not affect performance and welfare indicators. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the potential impact of grain-based pecking blocks on gut health indicators.
This study was performed to extract and analyze the biosignals to find the relationship between the level of anesthesia and the variations of physiological parameters during epidural anesthesia. Seven male and twenty female patients(ages from 45 to 70 years old) were participated for the experiment, and ECGs, PPGs, SKTs, SCRs were obtained during anesthesia. As results, the HF/LF ratios of HRV were decreased after the injection anesthetics. For skin temperatures, values measured from the palm was reduced and the temperatures from four channels, measured from armpit through the right side of the body, were increased. SCRs were decreased for all channels after the injection of anesthetics. However the heart rate and PPGs showed no significant changes. It was concluded that the injection of anesthetics result the changes in biosignals, and it could be explained by the degree of the sympathetic and/or parasympathetic nerve activities. Results of this study could provide the valuable information for the estimation of level for the spinal and general anesthesia, and could be extended to the development of a system which could quantify the level of anesthesia.
In this study, the effects of internal heat treatment associated sintering temperatures were simulated by the Finite Element Method (FEM). The sintering mechanism of pulsed current activated sintering process (PCAS) is still unclear because of some unexplainable heat transfer phenomena in coupled multi-physical fields, as well as the difficulty in measuring the interior temperatures of metal powder. We have carried out simulation study to find out thermal distributions between graphite mold and Ruthenium powder prior to PCAS process. For PCAS process, heating rate was maintained at $100^{\circ}C/min$ the simulation indicates that the sintering temperature range was between $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$ under 60 MPa. The heat transfer inside the Ruthenium sintered-body sample was modelled through the whole process in order to predict the minimum interior temperature. Thermal simulation shows that the interior temperature gradient decreased by graphite punch length and calculation results well agreed with the PCAS field test results.

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the shape control of plates via embedded shape memory alloy (SMA) wires. An extensive body of literature proposes the use of SMA wires to actively modify the shape or stiffness of a structure; in most cases, however, the study focuses on modeling and little experimental data is available. In this work, a simple proof of concept specimen was built by attaching four prestrained SMA wires to one side of a carbon fiber laminate plate strip. The specimen was clamped at one end and tested in an environmental chamber, measuring the tip displacement and the SMA temperature. At heating, actuation of the SMA wires bends the plate; at cooling deformation is partially recovered. The specimen was actuated a few times between two fixed temperatures $T_c$ and $T_h$, whereas in the last actuation a temperature $T_f$ > $T_h$ was reached. Contrary to most model predictions, in the first actuation the transformation temperatures are significantly higher than in the following cycles, which are stable. Moreover, if the temperature $T_h$ is exceeded, two separate actuations occur during heating: the first follows the path of the stable cycles; the second, starting at $T_h$, is similar to the first cycle. An interpretation of the phenomenon is given using some differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) measurements. The observed behavior emphasizes the need to build a more comprehensive constitutive model able to include these effects.

A mechanical face seal is most commonly used to seal liquids and gases at various speeds, pressures and temperatures. The primary seal ring is in sliding contact with the seal seat and as a result heat in the vicinity of the interface is generated. Local temperatures at points along the circumferential direction will fluctuate as asperities on the surfaces pass. This kind of fluctuation of temperature has been investigated to take place. This may lead to the hot spots phenomenon between the contacting asperities. Sibley and Allen showed photographic evidence of systemically moving hot spots in the contact zone. The appearance of such a temperature disturbance has been attributed to a kind of thermoelastic instabilities between two surfaces: This involves a feedback loop which comprises localized elevation of frictional heating, resultant localized thermal bulding, localized pressure increase as the result of the bulging and futher elevation of frictional heating as the result of the pressure increase. The heating of hot spots will be continued until the expanded material due to the frictional heating is worn off. Therefore to predict the speed of temperature propagation into the body is essential to the analysis of heat transfer on the edge of the seal.

The potential ability of environmental temperature to enhance the effect of microwave radiation (7 GHz) was experimentally studied for rabbit heating after simultaneous application of both agents. The tested ambient temperatures (30 and $38^{\circ}C$) didn't exert a considerable influence upon rabbit heat homeostasis after the used duration of exposure (3 hours and 15 minutes, correspondingly). The synergistic interaction of microwave irradiation and ambient temperature was demonstrated for rabbit heating. Power flux density of microwave irradiation was shown to be a determinant of the synergistic interaction effectiveness. For the fixed ambient temperature ($30^{\circ}C$), the synergism was shown to be observed only within a definite power flux density ($0-100\;mW{\cdot}cm^{-2}$), inside of which there was an optimal intensity ($20\;mW{\cdot}cm^{-2}$), which maximized the synergistic effect. Any deviation of the power flux density from the optimal value resulted in a reduction of the synergy. It is concluded that any assessment of the health or environmental risks should take into account the synergistic interaction between ambient temperature and microwave radiation.

In this paper, performance characteristics of a domestic kim-chi refrigerator are predicted by using the theoretical calculation and experimental method. The objective of this study is to find out the best design points of the refrigeration system and to calculate an adiabatic characteristic with variation to outdoor temperatures. The best design points such as refrigerant charge amount and capillary length were experimentally investigated. And the theoretical calculation is conducted as a function of calculation parameters and outdoor temperatures. According to this study results, the best design points of a refrigeration system with 2 rooms are 95 g of a refrigerant charge amount and 3500 / 3500 mm of capillary lengths and the best design points of a refrigeration system with 3 rooms are 100 g of a refrigerant charge amount and 3000/3000/6000mm of capillary lengths. And the power consumptions of both systems are 13.57 and 18.2 kWh/month. The worst part of heat loss is a front side of a domestic kim-chi refrigerator body.
$H_2S$ is a flammable toxic gas that can be produced in plants, mines, and industries and is especially fatal to human body. In this study, CuO nanowire structure with high porosity was fabricated by deposition of copper on highly porous singlewall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) template followed by oxidation. The SWCNT template was formed on alumina substrates by the arc-discharge method. The oxidation temperatures for Cu nanowires were varied from 400 to $800^{\circ}C$. The morphology and sensing properties of the CuO nanowire sensor were characterized by FESEM, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, XRD, and currentvoltage examination. The $H_2S$ gas sensing properties were carried out at different operating temperatures using dry air as the carrier gas. The CuO nanowire structure oxidized at $800^{\circ}C$ showed the highest response at the lowest operating temperature of $150^{\circ}C$. The optimum operating temperature was shifted to higher temperature to $300^{\circ}C$ as the oxidation temperature was lowered. The results were discussed based on the mechanisms of the reaction with ionosorbed oxygen and the CuS formation reaction on the surface.
This study was to determine the effect of cooling part of the trunk without harm for the health. The results provide basic data for the development of clothing which could increase work efficiency and reduce body strain in hot environment. Eight males took part in the study. The experiment was conducted in a climate-chamber controlled with $37{\pm}1^{\circ}C,\;50{\pm}5%R.H$. The trunk was divided into six areas to be cooled: head, neck, chest, abdomen, the upper back, the lower back. According to preceding studies, permissible safety cooling limits of skin temperature, of each part of the trunk for four hours cooling were $25^{\circ}C$ on the head, $20^{\circ}C$ on the neck, $27^{\circ}C$ on the chest, $25^{\circ}C$ on the abdomen, $20^{\circ}C$ on the upper back, $20^{\circ}C$ on the lower back. So cooling temperatures of each region set up temperatures above mentioned. In conclusion, the head, the neck and the upper back cooling could reduce sweating amount, rectal temperature and heart rates and reduce the heat stress of workers exposing in the hot environment by decreased subjective sensations of heat and comfort. Thus, it was concluded that effectiveness of cooling among the trunk was best on the head and the neck.

We investigated the effects of calcination temperature and sintering additives on the sintering behaviors and microwave dielectric properties of $(Zn_{0.8}Mg_{0.2})TiO_3$. Highly densified samples were obtained at the sintering temperatures below $1000^{\circ}C$ with additions of 0.45 wt.% $Bi_2O_3$ and 0.55 wt.% $V_2O_5$. From the examination of the existing phases and microstructures before and after sintering of $(Zn_{0.8}Mg_{0.2})TiO_3$ system calcined at the various temperatures ranging from $800^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$, it was found that high $Q{\times}f_o$ values were obtained when unreacted or second phases in calcined body were reduced. When calcined at $1000^{\circ}C$ and sintered at $900^{\circ}C$, it consists of hexagonal as a main phase with uniform microstructure and exhibits $Q{\times}f_o$ value of 42,000 GHz and dielectric constant of 22.
