Elderly Women's Body Image and Clothing Behavior (노인여성의 신체이미지와 의복행동)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate elderly women's body image and clothing behavior. Data were collected from 305 elderly women living in Gyeongnam province from May and June of 2011. Statistical methods including frequency analysis, factor analysis, F-test, t-test, Duncan test, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, correlation analysis and multiple regression were used for this study. The results of this study were as follows.: The body image was composed of two factors, 'physical attractiveness and interest in appearance', and 'concern about weight'. The clothing behavior was composed of the following five factors: 'social importance', 'conformity' 'individuality' 'economic efficiency' and 'clothing fashion interest'. The body image and clothing behavior according to the elderly women' demographic showed many differences. Elderly women's body image influenced their clothing behavior. These study results are highly expected to be used as valuable sources in fashion marketing plans for industries that target elderly women.

Effects of Clothing Behavior and Body Image on the Quality of Life of Elderly Men (노년 남성의 의복행동과 신체이미지가 삶의 질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated factors that contribute to the clothing behavior and body image of elderly men, how these factors vary by demographic characteristics, and how these factors affect quality of life. The subjects were 250 elderly men selected by convenience sampling between the ages of 60 to 80 who lived in Gyeongnam province. They participated in a survey from May-June 2012. Out of the 250 participants only 227 were used to analyze the data due to the completeness of their survey. The results showed that the factors for clothing behavior were social psychological importance, conformity, economic efficiency, fashion interest, and interpersonal intention. For body image, the factors revealed were physical attractiveness, interest in appearance, and concern about weight. Differences in the clothing behavior, body image, and quality of life were indicated by the demographic characteristics of the subjects. Clothing behavior and body image of elderly men were revealed as a contributing factor towards quality of life.

The Influence of Body Satisfaction and Psychological Characteristics on Appearance Elevation Attitude (신체만족도와 심리적 특성이 외모향상태도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation of desire for aesthetic surgery and clothing attitude of female with their body satisfaction, need, and self-esteem. Subjects were 813 females of 10's to 40's living in Daejeon Metropolitan City and Gongju City, Chungchungnamdo. Results from this research revealed that the correlation of desire for aesthetic surgery with body satisfaction was negative so that female satisfying one's body shape didn't want to have aesthetic surgery. However, aesthetics and sexual attractiveness of clothing had positive correlations with body satisfaction. It was also shown that the need and self-esteem of female affected directly on the desire for aesthetic surgery and the pursuit of clothing aesthetics. Women with higher need for exhibition and dominance were not only concerned about the elevation of their appearance through their clothing but also recognized the value of modifying their appearance through aesthetic surgery. Women with higher self-esteem were interested in the elevation of their appearance through clothing, but the other hand, they showed negative attitude toward modifying their appearance via aesthetic surgery. This result revealed the fact that women with higher self-esteem had a tendency to keep the traditional sense of value and as a result, showed negative attitude toward the aesthetic surgery.

The Male Perceiver's Image Evaluation and Preference of Women's Hairstyle (여성 헤어스타일에 대한 남성 지각자의 이미지 평가 및 선호도 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the male perceiver's image evaluation on women's hairstyle and hair color, and to disclose the preference of the hairstyle and hair color. The experimental design was $2{\times}3{\times}3$ (hair $wave{\times}hair\;length{\times}hair$ color) factorial design by 3 independent variables. The stimuli were 18 women's upper body photographs which were output by computer simulation. The hairstyles were straight hair and wavy hair, and the types of the hair length were long, medium, and short hair. The hair colors were black, dark brown, and bright brown. Subjects were 154 men living in Seoul. The data were analyzed by using factor analysis, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ reliability coefficient, three-way ANOVA, one-way ANOVA, and Duncan's multiple range test. The results of this study were as follows. Four image dimensions were derived by factor analysis. These were individuality, elegance, potency, and attractiveness. Male perceivers evaluated the women's long hairstyles to be more elegant than the short and the medium length hairs. The women's short hairstyles were perceived more potent than the long and the medium length hairs. The straight hairs were evaluated more elegant than the permed hairs, and the permed hairs were evaluated higher in individuality and attractiveness. The black hairs were perceived lowest in attractiveness, and the bright colors were perceived low in elegance. Male preferred the long brown straight hair first. They liked women's long hairs better than the short and the medium length hairs. Teenaged males preferred various hair colors more than those in their 20's and 30's did.

Body Image and Self-esteem of Adolescent Segments According to Family and School Factors (가족과 학교 관련 요인에 따른 청소년 세분집단의 신체 이미지와 자아존중감)

  • The purposes of this study were to segment adolescents into groups by family and school factors and to investigate the differences among the groups regarding body image and self-esteem. The study distributed the questionnaires to the adolescents who were middle and high school students in South Korea. The total respondents were 2240. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, cluster analysis, ANOVA, Duncan test, and $X^2-test$. Factor analysis showed that body image had four dimensions: appearance management, physical attractiveness, weight control, and the opposite sex fear. The cluster analysis showed that Korean adolescents were segmented into four groups (family preference/school preference group, family dissatisfaction/school dissatisfaction group, family average/peer competition group, family average/peer dissatisfaction group). The four groups were significantly different in regard to three dimensions of body image, self-esteem, and demographics. For example, the family preference/school preference group was most satisfied with their bodies, had a lowest opposite sex fear, and had a highest self·esteem. However, family dissatisfaction/teacher dissatisfaction group was most dissatisfied with their bodies, had a greatest interest in their appearance, and had a lowest self-esteem.

The Effects of Attitudes toward Cosmetic Surgery, Body Value Inclination, and Sociocultural Attitudes toward Appearance on Clothing Behavior (성형태도, 신체편향성, 외모에 대한 사회문화적 태도가 의복행동에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examines the influence of attitudes toward cosmetic surgery, body value inclination, and sociocultural attitudes towards appearance on clothing behavior. The subjects of this study were 315 female college students in Gyeongsang province. The data obtained were analyzed by a reliability analysis, factor analysis, correlation analysis, stepwise multiple regression analysis, and t-test. The major results of this study were as follows: First, three factors of attitudes toward cosmetic surgery were identified: the desire/motive for cosmetic surgery, risk taking for cosmetic surgery, and confidentiality about cosmetic surgery. Second, two factors of body value inclination were identified: getting an attractive physical appearance and maintaining an attractive physical appearance. Third, a significant positive correlation was found for attitudes toward cosmetic surgery, body value inclination, and sociocultural attitudes towards appearance with clothing behavior. Fourth, the most important variable that affected the imitation of celebrity clothing and preference for luxury goods was the desire/motive for cosmetic surgery. In addition, the sexual attractiveness of clothing was influenced by risk taking for cosmetic surgery and sociocultural attitudes towards appearance.

Attitudes toward Appearance and Body Satisfaction according to Uniform Modification Behavior of Middle and High School Girls (여중·고생들의 교복변형행동에 따른 외모에 대한 태도와 신체만족)

  • The purpose of this study is to classify students' attitudes towards uniform modification and analyze their subjective experience regarding appearance, and body satisfaction. Questionnaires were administered to 369 middle and high school girls living in Deagu Metropolitan City. Frequency, factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, ${\chi}^2$-test, and t-test are all used for data analysis. Our findings are as follows. Two hundred thirty students (62.3%) agreed to modify their school uniforms to express their personalities and follow fashion trends. Motives for uniform modification had to do with social life, physical attractiveness, and practicality. Attitudes toward appearance are found to be shaped by appearance internalization, active management of appearance, appearance needs, social recognition, and conformity. The motives for uniform modification reveal a significant correlation with attitudes toward appearance. Uniform modification satisfaction differed depending on sub-variables of attitude toward appearance(active management of appearance, personalized appearance needs, social recognition, and body satisfaction, such as satisfaction with height and BMI). There was a significant difference in expression of intention for future plastic surgery depending on body image.

Suggesting Coping Strategies for the Various Stresses from Body Weight in Korean Males -A Qualitative Approach-

  • This study investigates coping strategies of overweight or underweight males in Korea. For this purpose, the authors identify types of stress related to weight management. A qualitative method was utilized to collect the data related to successful weight management experiences of males aged 20-37 years. Data were analyzed based on a motivation theory of coping, which suggests coping strategy elements. The results of this study identified the stress related to weight: dissatisfaction with appearance, others' disapproval of appearance, health problems, weaker athletic ability, negative self-perception, passiveness about appearance, lower romantic attractiveness, others' disapproval of lower romantic attractiveness, weakened task execution capability, and negative stereo-types about task execution capability. In addition, six coping strategies were suggested: improved appearance, improved physical function, improved positive self-perception, more choices to improve appearance, enhanced romantic relationship, and enhanced job performance. This study shows that weight problems in modern society are diverse and complex. Therefore a man who has abnormal weight needs to clarify his stress first and then proposes strategies that are appropriate for each type of stress.

The Effect of Presentation Methods of Apparel Products on the Internet on Purchase Decision Making. - Focused on the purchase of jeans apparel far college students - (인터넷상의 의류상품 제시방법과 구매의사결정과의 관계 연구 -여대생의 청바지 구매를 중심으로-)

  • There are various presentation methods of apparel products on the internet shopping mall. The objective of this study was (a) to identify the effect of information supply about the criteria to evaluate a garment according to presentation methods and (b) to investigate the relation between the consumer's evaluation of presentation methods and confidence in purchase decision. For this experiment. 4 presentation methods of jean were selected from internet shopping mall. They were rotating appearance on the body, enlarged product picture, apparel items coordination method and just picture of wearing appearance. Each presentation method was evaluated by panels using questionnaire. Consumer's evaluation of presentation methods were developed 5 point likert scale. The major findings drawn from this study were as follows : 1. There were significant differences in degree of information supply about product criteria according to presentation methods. Enlarged product picture introduction was good for confirmation of sewing state, fabric and detail. Apparel items coordination method was good for judgement of styling and current fashion suitability. 2. Dimension of information evaluation was composed of providing pleasure, utility of information, reliability & attractiveness, negative emotions. All of these factors affect confidence in purchase decision and intention of revisiting the site. The most important factor for confidence in purchase decision making was reliability & attractiveness. as compared to this, intention of revisiting the site was more influenced by providing pleasure.

The Effect of Achromatic Shirt and Chromatic Tie Combination on Image of Menswear (무채색 셔츠와 유채색 타이의 배색이 남성 패션 이미지에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of achromatic shirt and chromatic tie combination on image of menswear. This experiment was designed by shirt color(N9, N7, N4, N2), tie color(red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple), tie tone(vivid, light, dull, dark), and perceiver gender(a male, a female). The experimental materials developed for this study were a set of stimulus and response scales. The stimuli were 96 upper body photographs and 26 7-point bi-polar adjectives were used to evaluate the image. The subjects of this research were 480 male and 480 female college students. The data was analyzed by using SPSS program. Analysis methods were four-way ANOVA. The items of the adjectives were classified into 4 image factor: potency, activity, attractiveness, and visibility. Shirt color, tie color, tie tone influenced on the 4 image dimension greatly by interaction as well as independently. Dull or dark tone tie had an effect on the formation of potency image. And white color shirt, vivid or light tone tie had an effect on the formation of activity image. White or black shirt had a positive effect on attractiveness, and black shirt or vivid tone tie was effective for visible image.
