Recently, the color separation issue of wide-spreading white LEDs has attracted attention due to their wide applicability as light sources in direct-lit LCD backlights. These wide-spreading LED packages usually consist of LED chips, a color-conversion phosphor layer, and a light-shaping lens. The technical aspect of this color issue was related to a method for balancing the yellow spectral component emitting from phosphors with respect to the blue one from the LED chip as a function of viewing angle. In this study, we suggested an approach for carrying out quantitative analysis for the color separation problem occurring in wide-spreading LED packages by optical simulation. In addition, the effect of an internal scattering layer on the color uniformity was investigated, which may be considered as a potential solution for this problem.
A new LED lamp driving technology with a charge pump instead of a conventional DC-DC converter is proposed. The proposed driving technology is used to control the LED lamp with digital dimming. The power loss in the zener diodes is reduced because the charging process of the capacitors is selectively controlled according to the digital control signal. From the experimental results, when dimming four LED lamps simultaneously, the average driving circuit efficiency of 89% is obtained, regardless of the dimming level. White light with color temperature over a range of 2800~7200K was produced by dimming control of red, green, blue and amber LED lamps with the proposed driving circuit. The characteristics of the driving circuits can be changed depending on the characteristics of the R, G, B, and A LED lamps. The efficiency of the driving circuits up to a maximum 89% can also be obtained depending on the combination of LED lamps. The driving technology with digital dimming control for LED lamps proposed in this paper would be effective for obtaining high efficiency in LED driving circuits and remote control of LED lamps using digital communications.
Europium$(Eu^{2+}\;or\;Eu^{3+})$-activated calcium aluminium silicate phosphors were synthesized for the first time and the structures and luminescence characteristics of these phosphors were investigated. The phosphors in this study emitted blue, green, and even red light depending on the starting milterials and annealing conditions for synthesis. In addition, the structure was also changed when the different starting materials were used. When $CaCO_3$ was used as a starting material, tetragonal $Ca_2Al_2SiO_7$ was formed. However, pure green light was emitted when the annealing was conducted in reduced atmosphere and red one was emitted by annealing in air. In the case of $CaSiO_3$ as a starting material, triclinic $CaAl_2Si_2O_8$ was formed and only pure blue emission was observed. Moreover, this blue phosphor exhibited higher intensity than that of commercial YAG:Ce phosphor, which showed the possibility of application on the phosphor for new light source such as a UV-LED.
Investigation on oriental melon was carried out for 30 minutes starting at 7 PM every day from March 21 to May 24 to find out the effect of light emitting diode on seedling quality, grafting, growth and flowering of oriental melon. According to the result of the investigation, plant height was longer in Blue, Infrared, Red+Blue and Red treatment and leaf number was higher in Blue, Red+Blue and Infrared treatment than those of control. No big difference was identified between control and Yellow, Green, Ultraviolet treatments. Grafting rate was high in Green, Red+Blue and Green treatment. The number of flower every week in control was nine, the number was almost 1 higher in White and Ultraviolet A treatments, but it was 1 to 4 lower in the rest of treatments. The number of female flowers of control was 10, however, it was 21 in Infrared treatment, 17 in White, 15 in Ultraviolet, 13 in Red+lnfrared, 12 in Blue and Red+Blue, 11 in Yellow and 8 in Green.
To use the GaN based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as solid state lighting sources, the improvement of light extraction and internal quantum efficiency is essential factors for high brightness LEDs. In this study, we suggested the new materials system of a zinc tin oxide (ZTO) layer formed on blue LED epi-structures to improve the light extraction. ZTO is a representative n-type oxide material consisted of ZnO and SnO system. Moreover, ZTO is one of the promising oxide semiconductor material. Even though ZTO has higher chemical stability than IGZO owing to its SnO2 content this has high mobility and high reliability. After formation of ZTO layer on p-GaN layer by using the spin coating method, structural and optical properties are investigated. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement results show the successful formation of ZTO. The photoluminescence (PL) and absorption spectrum shows that it has 3.6-4.1eV band gap. Finally, the light extraction properties of ZTO/LED chip using electroluminescence (EL) measurement were investigated. The experimental and theoretical analyses were simultaneously conducted.
A novel electrochemical potentiostatic method has been examined in order to enhance the hole concentration of p-type GaN thin films using KOH and HCl electrolyte. The hole concentration was increased more than 2 times by the electric voltge apply with the mobility of $10{\sim}12cm^2/V.s$. At optimum condition of 3V apply, hole concentration was enhanced more than reference sample from $1.7{\times}10^{-17}cm^{-3}$ to $4.1{\times}10^{-17}cm^{-3}$. Application of this activation method to blue-LED fabrication improved optical output from 18.4mW to 20.6mW, that is ~12% increase. SIMS analysis indicates that nearly 70% of hydrogen atoms could be removed by this method.

The clinical performance of light polymerized composite resins is greatly influenced by the quality of the light curing unit used. Commonly used halogen light curing units(LCUs) have some specific drawbacks such as decreasing light output with time. To overcome this, the blue LED LCUs are newly developed and introduced. The purpose of this study was to observe the reaction kinetics and the degree of polymerization of composite resins when cured by different light sources and to evaluate the effectiveness of the blue LED LCUs compared with conventional halogen LCUs.(omitted)
In this study, we attempt to synthesize the $Sr_{3}SiO_{5}:Eu$ yellow phosphor by sol-gel technique. Based on the blue emitting diodes as primary light source, white light emitting diodes have been manufactured using the $Sr_{3}SiO_{5}:Eu$ yellow phosphor as the luminescent material. Luminescent efficiency of yellow phosphor as well as that of blue LED is very important factor to enhance the luminescent efficiency of white LED. In order to improve the luminescent efficiency, we have synthesized the $Sr_{3}SiO_{5}:Eu$ phosphor by sol-gel technique. To research optimum condition of gelation reaction, the ratio of $H_{2}O$ to TEOS was fixed as 60:1. When the drying temperature was at $100^{\circ}C$, emission intensity was better than at $70^{\circ}C$. The critical $Eu^{2+}$ concentration was estimated to be about 0.05 mol and sintering temperature at $1300^{\circ}C$ was indicated best emission intensity.
