  • Rice, the staple food in Korea, is deficient to some extent in protein, lipid and vitamins. This study was carried out in order to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation to the rice diet of cellulose, ginseng, and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol on lead toxicity in rats. Using male rats fed the rice diet with the distilled drinking water containing 750mg of lead as nitrate per liter, for 11 weeks, organ weights, hemoglobin levels, serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase activity and accumulation of lead in liver, blood and kidney were observed. Supplementation of cellulose, ginseng and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol to the lead groups showed the protective effect significantly in the weight of liver but no influence in hemoglobin levels. Ginseng especially decreased the serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase activity to normal level. The three supplemented diets reduced the lead accumulation in kidney and blood, but not in liver.

  • In this work the kinetics of volume changes of fluid spaces associated with infusion of Ringer's solution are analyzed using the body fluid space model. During infusion of Ringer's solution, the human body is assumed to be characterized by the fluid space model into which fluid is fed and from which fluid is left. Various infusion types were tested to accommodate different medical situations. Volunteers were given Ringer's solution and the changes in blood hemoglobin were detected. From the comparison with experimental data, the single- and two-fluid space models were found to represent adequately the kinetics of human volume expansion during infusion of Ringer's solution.

  • This study was conducted to observe the hematological effect of the small dogs when administrated excessive amount of the Korean native chinese chive(Allium tuberosum Rottler) extracts for a short period. In this experiment, clinically healthy dogs(n = 10, average weight = 4.17 kg) were used. They were inserted stomach tube and administrated the extracts(5ml/kg) for 7 days. The followings are the result of this experiment. The red blood cell counts, hemoglobin concentration and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration were significantly decreased. (P<0.05) The packed cell volume was slightly decreased. The mean corpuscular volume and methemoglobin concentration were significantly increased.(P<0.05) The white blood cell counts and reduced glutathione were slightly increased. Consequently, We determined that administrated excessive amount of the Korean native chinese chive extracts induced hemolytic anemia.

  • Many types of chemical data tend to be characterized by many measured variables on each of a few observations. In this situation, target concentration can be predicted using multivariate statistical modeling. However, it is necessary to use a few variables considering size and cost of instrumentation, for an example, for development of a portable biomedical instrument. This study presents, with a spectral data set of total hemoglobin in whole blood, the possibility that modeling using only a few variables can improve predictability compared to modeling using all of the variables. Predictability from the model using three wavelengths selected from all possible regression method was improved, compared to the model using whole spectra (whole spectra: SEP = 0.4 g/dL, 3-wavelengths: SEP=0.3 g/dL). It appears that the proper selection of variables can be more effective than using whole spectra for determining the hemoglobin concentration in whole blood.

  • Many interference in blood should be considered for non-invasive blood glucose level monitoring by near-infrared spectroscopy because blood glucose concentration is about 0.1% (w/v) in normal state. In this study, we investigated the influence of other blood components on blood glucose level monitoring by near-infrared spectroscopy. It carried out by newly developed portable type-NIR system (1100∼2200 nm). Spectrum features of NIR diffuse spectral data were investigated for some blood compnents powder such as hemoglobin, blood serum albumin, urea, uric acid, ascorbate, glucose, cholesterol and as adding glucose powder into other blood components powder mixture. • Purpose: Blood hemoglobin levels are known to influence response to radiotherapy. This retrospective analysis compared the effect of hemoglobin levels upon response to radiation among patients treated with radiation alone (by accelerated hyperfractionated radiotherapy) versus those treated with concurrent cisplatin chemoradiotherapy. Materials and Methods: Among patients treated for locally advanced carcinoma of the cervix (LACC) during 2009-10, a total of 60 fulfilled the eligibility criteria. In this time frame, external beam radiotherapy was delivered with either concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT, n=31) (45Gy over 25 fractions, with weekly cisplatin at 40mg/m2), or with accelerated hyperfractionated radiotherapy (AHRT, n=29) (20Gy over 10 daily fractions over the first two weeks, followed by 30Gy over 20 fractions over the next two weeks, with two fractions of 1.5Gy per day, without the use of chemotherapy). Mean weekly hemoglobin (MWH) levels of all patients were calculated as the arithmetic means of weekly recorded blood hemoglobin levels. As per MWH, patients in both of the AHRT or the CRT groups were classified into two subgroups-those with MWH between 10-10.9g/dL, or with MWH>11g/dL. Complete response (CR) to external beam RT phase (prior to brachytherapy) was declared after clinical examinations and computed tomography. The CR rate was noted for both MWH sub-groups within each of the AHRT and CRT groups. Results: Within the AHRT group, patients with MWH>11g/dL had a much better CR rate in comparison to those with MWH:10-10.9g/dL (80% vs. 21.1%) which was statistically significant (p 0.0045). Within the CRT group, there was no significant difference in the outcomes within the MWH>11g/dL and MWH:10-10.9g/dL sub-groups (CR rates of 80% vs. 61.9%, p=0.4285). Conclusions: The importance of maintaining a minimum hemoglobin level of 11g/dL during RT is much greater for patients treated with RT alone, than for patients treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Enhanced haemoglobin levels during RT may to an extent negate the ill-effects that may otherwise arise due to non-use of concurrent chemotherapy.

  • Iron has a crucial role in growth as part of metalo-proteins like haemoglobin or myoglobin, enzymes; they are also involved in energetic reactions. Iron plays a vital role in fertility. At high doses, Iron has a harmful consequence on the reproductive system, which can be strongly reflected the final stage of spermatogenesis. Nutritional products are claiming to use nanotechnology and it is important to recognize the potential toxicity of nano-sized nutrients. Recently iron nanoparticles were proposed as a food additive for poultry. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of L-cystein coated iron oxide nanoparticles on reproductive performance in male quails. The results of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer, Alternating Gradient Force Magnetometer and Scaning Electron Microscopy showed that iron oxide nanoparticles was produced and have been coated with L-cycstein (Fe3O4-Cys NPs). A total of 100 one-week-old quail chicks were randomly placed to five groups of five replicates. Four quails (two male and two females) were raised in an individual cage for each replicate. The five experimental treatment diets consisted; negative control diet, with no Iron supplementation; positive control diet supplemented with 60 mg/kg of Fe3O4; treatment diets supplemented with 0.6, 6 and 60 mg/kg of L-cystein coated iron oxide nanoparticles. The hemoglobin, Red blood cell, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, gonadal somatic index, daily sperm production, total testicular sperm and sperm viability of the male quails that were fed with diet supplemented by 0.6 mg/kg of Fe3O4-Cys NPs were improved as compare with negative control. This study showed that not only the use of the Fe3O4-Cys nanoparticles had no side effects but also it can be used as a feed additive to improve the reproductive performance in male quails.

  • The phenotypes of hemoglobin, albumin and transferrin of 3U2 Jindo dogs in Jindo area were studied by starch gel electrophoresis for hemoglobin and albumin, and by polyacrylamide gradient gel electrophoresis for transferrin. The results obtained were as follows: 1. In the hemoglobin phenotypes, three phenotypes, HbAA, HbAB and HbBB, which were controlled by two allelic genes, $Hb^A$ and $Hb^B$, were observed and their frequencies of appearance were 1.65%, 10.60% and 87.75% respectively. The distribution of gene frequency was calculated as 0.0695 in $Hb^A$ and 0.9305 in $Hb^B$. 2. In the albumin phenotypes, three phenotypes, Alb FF, Alb FS and Alb SS, which were controlled by two allelic genes, $AIb^F$ and $AIb^S$ were observed and their frequencies of appearance were 12.59%, 25.56% and 61.85% respectively. The distribution of gene frequency was calculated as 0.2537 in $AIb^F$ and 0.7463 in $AIb^S$. 3. Analysis of transferrin phenotypes showed 6 different types which were controlled by three allelic genes, $Tf^B$, $Tf^C$ and $Tf^D$ and their frequencies of appearance were 54.04% in TfBB, 17.54% in TfBC, 9.82% in TfBD, 8.07% in TfCC, 7.37% in TfCD and 3.16% in TfDD. The distribution of gene frequency was calculated as 0.6772 in $Tf^B$, 0.2053 in $Tf^C$ and 0.1175 in $Tf^D$.
