Hemodialysis is essential for patients with end stage renal failure. It is important to improve the patency rate and to minimize occurrence of the stenosis. Also, the blood flow to the artificial kidney can affect the blood flow characteristics though arteriovenous graft. Thus, the delivered dose are important factors for analyzing hemodynamic characteristics during hemodialysis access. In this study, the numerical analysis was performed for the effect of the delivered dose during hemodialysis access on the blood flow through the graft. As a result, The adverse pressure gradient occurred in case of a larger delivered dose through a catheter than standard dose and the flow instability increased. Also the circulation flow appeared largely at anastomotic site of the vein when the delivered dose was exceeded about half blood flow of inlet blood flow.
The three-dimensional flow analysis using the finite volume method is presented to compare the steady flow characteristics of blood with those of blood substitutes such as water and aqueous polymer solution in an idealized double branching model. The model is used to simlllate the region of the abdominal aorta near the celiac and superior mesenteric branches. Apparent viscosities of blood and the aqueous Separan solution are represented as a function of shear rate by the Carreau model, Water and aqueoiu Separan AP-273 500wppm solution are frequently used as blood substitutes in vitro experiments. Water is a typical Newtonian fluid and blood and Separan solution are non-Newtonian fluids. Flow phenomena such as velocity distribution, pressure variation and wall shear stress distribution of water, blood and polymer solution are quite different due to differences of the rheological characteristics of fluids. Flow phenomena of polymer solution are qualitatively similar to those of blood but the phenomena of water are quite different from those of blood and polymer solution. It is recommended that a lion-Newtonian fluid which exhibits very similar rheological behavior to blood be used in vitro experiments. A non-Newtonian fluid whose rheological characteristics are very similar to those of blood should be used to obtain the meaninylll hemodynamic data for blood flow in vitro experiment and by numerical analysis
In the present study, the characteristics of blood flow inside a carotid artery numerically investigated with shear rate specific blood viscosity. To simulate the blood flow with a patient-specific arterial geometry, the geometry of a carotid artery was constructed from 2D rain MRA data. The measured data of blood flow velocity at the common carotid artery were used as boundary conditions of the simulation. For the blood rheology data to be used in the simulation, the patient specific blood viscosity over the whole ranges of shear rate was obtained using $BioVisco^{TM}$. From the numerical results of the blood flow in the carotid artery, the increase of blood viscosity and the decrease of wall shear stress could be found in the carotid bifurcated region, more specifically at the post-plaque dilated region. These characteristics of blood viscosity and wall shear stress can be used more precisely and efficiently to predict the region vulnerable to plaque growht or thrombosis on top of the plaque.
In order to obtain velocity profile of blood flow with high spatial resolution, a micro PIV technique consisted of a fluorescent microscope, double-pulsed YAG laser, cooled CCD camera was applied to in-vitro blood flow experiment through a micro round tube of a diameter $100{\mu}m$. Velocity distributions of blood flow for rabbit were obtained. The viscosity profiles for shear rate were found at flowing condition. To provide hemorheological characteristics of blood flow, the viscosities for shear rate were evaluated. The viscosity of blood also steeply increase by decreasing shear rate resulting in Non-Newtonian flow, especially in low shear rate region caused by RBC rheological properties. The results show typical characteristics of Non-Newtonian characteristics from the results of velocity profile and viscosity for blood flow. From the inflection points, cell free layer and two-phase flow consisted with plasma and suspensions including RBCs can be separated.

In this study, the leaflet motion of a mechanical heart valve and the characteristics of two-dimensional transient blood flow in an elastic blood vessel have been numerically investigated by using fluid-structure interaction method. Here, blood has been assumed as a Newtonian, incompressible fluid. Pressure profiles have been used as boundary conditions at the ventricle and the aorta. As a result, closing motion of the leaflet is faster than opening one. While opening angles of leaflet grow up, vortex is detected at the sinus and backward of the leaflets. When the leaflet is fully closed, vortex is detected at the ventricle and at that moment maximum displacement of the elastic blood vessel is observed in the vicinity of the sinus region. Maximum displacement is caused in association with the blood flow that is oriented toward the elastic blood vessel.
The present study investigates the hemorheological characteristics of blood flow with applying vibration to a non-aggregating red blood cell suspension. In order to obtain the non-aggregating RBC suspension, blood samples were treated with vibration at a specified condition, which viscosities were taken before and after the treatment, respectively. The viscosity of the blood samples after treatment was higher than before treatment. These treated blood samples were forced to flow through a capillary tube that was vibrated perpendicularly to the direction of the flow. The experimental results showed that vibration caused a reduction of the flow resistance of the non-aggregated blood. The reduction of the flow resistance was strongly dependent on both frequency and amplitude of vibration. These results show potential in treating various diseases in the microcirculation associated with blood cell aggregation.
The flow characteristics of chicken blood in a micro-tube with a $100{\mu}m$ diameter are investigated using a micro-Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique. Chicken blood with 40% hematocrit is supplied into the micro-tube using a syringe pump. For comparison, the same experiments are repeated for human blood with 40% hematocrit. Chicken blood flow has a cell-free layer near the tube wall, and this layer's thickness increases with the increased flow speed due to radial migration. As a hemorheological feature, the aggregation index of chicken blood is about 50% less than that of human blood. Therefore, the non-Newtonian fluid features of chicken blood are not very remarkable compared with those of human blood. As the flow rate increases, the blunt velocity profile in the central region of the micro-tube sharpens, and the parabolicshaped shear stress distribution becomes to have a linear profile. The viscosity of both blood samples in a low shear rate condition is overestimated, while the viscosity in a high shear rate range is underestimated due to radial migration and the presence of a cell-depleted layer.
Objectives : This study was designed to establish the basis for expanding the indications for Blood-letting therapy by reviewing the contents recorded in the Zhenjiudacheng. In addition to the usual Blood-letting region, Blood-letting therapy was performed directly on the pathologic site and pathologic reaction site. Conclusions : In the Zhenjiudacheng, Blood-letting therapy was described in a concrete and substantive manner in order to enable practical clinical application.
In this paper, the authors have implemented a blood flow simulator and a blood flowmeter probe using self-mixing effect of the laser diode. The purpose of the blood simulator is to simulate microvascular blood flow in tissue. It consists of melinex film (thickness = $125{\mu}m$) which has similar optical characteristics to epidermis and porous polyethylene filter (Vyon, porosity 35%, mean pore size $50{\mu}m$, thickness=1 mm) which has similar optical characteristics to dermis. The blood flowmeter probe consists of laser diode(5 mW, 780 nm wavelength), CD lens(focal lenght 12 mm), current-to-voltage converter, highpass filter, and preamplifier. It doesn't need optical fiber, therefore, implementation of the probe is simpler than conventional probe using optical fiber.
Cerebral aneurysm mostly occurs at a bifurcation of the circle of Willis. When the cerebral aneurysm is ruptured, a disease like subarachnoid hemorrhage and stroke is caused and this can be even deadly for patients. Generally it is known that causes of the intracranial aneurysm are a congenital deformity of the artery and pressure or shear stress from the blood flow. A blood flow pattern and the geometry of the blood vessel are important factors for the aneurysm formation. Research for several hemodynamic indices has been performed and these indices can be used for the prediction of aneurysm initiation and rupture. Therefore, the numerical analysis was performed for hemodynamic characteristics of the blood flow through the cerebral artery applying the various bifurcation angle and flow rate ratio. We analyze the flow characteristics using indices from the results of the numerical simulation. In addition, to investigate the flow pattern in the aneurysm according to the bifurcation angle and the flow rate ratio, we performed the numerical simulation on the supposition that the aneurysm occurs.
