Comparison Between Sodium Acetate and Sodium Chloride in Parenteral Nutrition for Very Preterm Infants on the Acid-Base Status and Neonatal Outcomes

  • Purpose: To compare between sodium acetate (SA) and sodium chloride (SC) in parenteral nutrition (PN) with associated metabolic acidosis and neonatal morbidities in preterm infants. Methods: Preterm infants below 33 weeks gestational age, and with a birth weight under 1,301 g were enrolled and further stratified into two groups: i) <1,000 g, or ii) ≥1,000 g in birth weight. The subjects were randomized to receive PN containing SA or SC within the first day of life. The results of routine blood investigations for the first 6 days of PN were collated, and the neonatal outcomes were recorded upon discharge or demise. Results: Fifty-two infants entered the study, with 26 in each group: 29 infants had extremely low birth weight (ELBW). There were no significant differences in birth weight, gestation, sex, exposure to chorioamnionitis and antenatal steroids, surfactant doses and duration of mechanical ventilation between groups. The SA group had significantly higher mean pH and base excess (BE) from days 4 to 6 than the SC (mean pH, 7.36 vs. 7.34; mean BE -1.6 vs. -3.5 [p<0.01]), with a two-fold increase in the mean BE among ELBW infants. Significantly fewer on SA required additional bicarbonate (n=4 vs. 13, p=0.01). The rate of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) was approximately four-fold lower in SA than SC (n=3 vs. 11, p<0.01). No significant differences were observed in necrotizing enterocolitis, patent ductus arteriosus, retinopathy of prematurity, cholestatic jaundice, and mortality between groups. Conclusion: The use of SA in PN was associated with reduced metabolic acidosis and fewer BPD.

Nutrient Intake, Acid Base Status and Growth Performance of Thalli Lambs Fed Varying Level of Dietary Cation-anion Difference

  • Influence of -110, +110, +220 and +330 mEq/kg of dry matter (DM) dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) on growth performance of Thalli lambs were examined in a randomized complete block design. Four DCAD diets were randomly allotted to four groups, with ten lambs in each group. A linear increase in nutrient intake was recorded with increasing DCAD level. The digestibilities of nutrients were higher in lambs fed -110 DCAD diet than those fed +110, +220 and +330 DCAD diets. Lambs fed +330 DCAD diet had higher nitrogen balance than those fed -110 and +110 DCAD diets. Blood pH and serum $HCO_3$ increased with increasing DCAD level. Serum chloride was higher in lambs fed -110 DCAD diet, while serum (Na+K)-(Cl+S) increased linearly with increasing DCAD level. Serum calcium increased with decreasing DCAD level while serum magnesium and phosphorus remained unaffected. Lambs fed -110 DCAD diet had higher Ca balance than those fed +110, +220 and +330 DCAD diets. Urine pH increased with increasing DCAD level. Lambs fed +220 and +330 DCAD diets gained more weight than those fed -110 and +110 DCAD diets. In conclusion, increased DCAD level not only increased the dry matter intake but also improved the weight gain of growing Thalli lambs.

  • Recently, the use of antibiotics to improve animal productivity in livestock industry was strictly restricted. For these reason, probiotics have been regarded as one of promising materials for an antibiotic alternative. In this study, we investigated how the probiotics influences on the performance of broiler chicken via meta-analysis. Eighteen researches from 1997 to 2010 were used for meta-analysis. The standard summary effects were calculated via fixed effect model and random effect model (Borenstein et al., 2009). Heterogeneity was calculated by using the Cochran's Q statistics (Kook et al., 2009) and publication bias was calculated via Egger's regression (Lee et al., 2011). In fixed model average daily gain, body weight serum protein content and cecal LAB showed positive effect significantly. Feed intake, feed/gain and serum cholesterol showed significant negative effect. In serum triglyceride, negative effect was found but significance was not shown. In random model, average daily gain body weight and cecal LAB showed positive effects with significance and feed/gain and serum cholesterol represented significant negative effects. Publication bias was found only in feed/gain.

Expressions of Gonadotropin Subunit Genes in the Reproductively Inactive Golden Hamsters

  • Photoperiod has well been established to regulate testicular activities in golden hamsters. These animals breed actively around summer but become infertile in winter. In males, testicles are full of multistep germ cells including spermatozoa in summer. But in winter only fundamental cells consisting of the testicles are detected. The testicular degeneration is accompanied by the reduced levels of blood gonadotropins and testosterone. In this study, the expressions of gonadotropin subunit genes were investigated in the reproductive active and inactive testicles. And parts of sequences of the gonadotropin subunits were identified and compared with those of other rodents. As results, common gonadotropin alpha (CGa), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) β, and luteinizing hormone (LH) β genes were equivalently detected in pituitaries of both sexually active and inactive animals. In considering low concentrations of gonadotropin hormones determined in pituitary, the present findings imply that the processes involved in translation and/or formation of functional hormones could be impeded in the sexually inactive hamsters. All the nucleotide sequences of gonadotropin subunits identified in this study were same as those reported previously except for one base in CGa. An unsure amino acid deduced from the CGa sequence was confirmed from mRNA sequencing. The outcomes mentioned above suggest that animals with regressed testes prepare for the sexually active period forthcoming in the future.

$CO_2$ 환경에서의 참문어의 급성 독성반응 (Acute Toxic Responses of Octopus vulgaris to $CO_2$ Environment)

  • 이산화탄소($CO_2$) 해양격리처리 방안의 실효성을 검토하기 위해서는 해양에 처리된 $CO_2$가 해양생태계 및 해양생물에 미칠 수 있는 영향에 대해서 광범위하게 정보를 축적할 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 두족류인 참문어 Octopus vulgaris를 대상으로 고농도 $CO_2$ 환경(1, 2, 3%-$CO_2$)에서의 폐사율 및 1%-$CO_2$ 환경에서의 생리학적 반응에 대해서 조사하였다. 참문어는 혈액채취를 위하여 복부대동맥에 케뉴레이션을 행한 후 호흡실에서 회복시켰다. 회복된 개체에 대하여 헤모림프의 산염기 조절인자에 대한 측정을 행하였다. 참문어는 3%-$CO_2$ 환경에서 72시간 안에 100% 폐사하였다. 헤모림프의 pH는 1%-$CO_2$ 노출 30분 후 유의하게 감소하였으나 실험종료 때까지 회복되지 않았으며, $[HCO_3^-]$$CO_2$ 노출 후 유의하게 증가하여 8시간에 7.8 mM를 나타내었으나 그 후 점차 감소하는 경향이었다. 헤모림프 이온$([Cl^-],\;[Na^+],\;[K^+])$들은 유의한 변화를 보이지 않았다. 본 연구 결과 참문어는 방어, 넙치와 같은 경골어류 및 별상어와 같은 판새류보다 $CO_2$에 민감한 것으로 사료된다.

Serum Mineral and Haematobiochemical Profile of Microfilariae Infected Cattle in India: Its Effects on Production and Therapy

  • A survey was under taken of six district of Northern India viz. Bareilly, Pilibhit, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Almora and Rampur. The age, breed, sex and physiological status recorded. A total number of 854 cattle examined out of which lactating (274 cases), non lactating (302 cases) heifers (128 cases), calves (82 cases) and adult male (68 cases) were examined. An incidence of 4.92 percent (42) of microfilarisis was recorded. The highest prevalence was observed in Rudrapur District of Udham Singh Nagar (33.33%, 4/12), followed by Lalkaun in Nanital District (21.74%, 10/46), Rampur (12.50%, 2/16), Bareilly (8.16%, 8/98) and Pilibhit (1.22%, 1/82). No infection was observed in Almora region. Amongst 854 cattle of different group incidence was highest in adult male (12.20%, 10/82), followed by non lactating (3.82%, 12/314) and lactating (2.70%, 2/74), (7.64%, 12/157) was found in Heifers. For haemeto-biochemical, serum minerals estimations and therapeutic study 32 animals suffering from filariasis and 18 healthy animals were taken. 16 animals were treated with ivermectin $@200{\mu}g/kg $ body weight. Effect of this disease on production has also been estimated for which body weight and milk production was observed. The main clinical manifestations observed were anaemia, loss of appetite, debility, oedematous swelling especially in the abdominal region, increased heart rate, and respiration rate. Haematological changes indicated decrease in hemoglobin, total erythrocyte count, packed cell volume, erthrocyte fragility and neutrophil, whereas there was significant increase in erythrocytes sedimentation rate (ESR), total leukocyte count (TLC), lymphocyte and eosinophils. Biochemical changes showed significant reduction in the values of serum albumin, A : G ratio, where as there was significant increase in blood glucose, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), globulin, total lipid, total cholesterol, phospholipids, serum bilirubin. Serum mineral profile also altered markedly, which indicate a significant decrease in Ca, Cu, Fe, Zn, and Mn with increase value of Na and Cl. There was no significant change in P and K values. Enzyme pattern in micro filaria infected animal indicated increased level of AST, ALT, alkaline phosphatase, ornithine carbamyl transferase, sorbitol dehydrogenase, glutamate dehydrogenase, isocitric dehydrogenase and lactate dehydrogenase. In blood gas values and acid/base balance, there was an increase in $PVCo_2$ and $PVo_2$. It has been observed that microfilaria infected cattle showed decrease in body weight and milk production. Animal treated with ivermectin showed the return of these above values toward normalcy.

캠프 캐럴 인근 주민의 혈중 및 요중 휘발성 유기화합물 평가 (Assessment of Volatile Organic Compounds in Blood and Urine among Residents around Camp Carroll)

  • Objectives: Exposure to volatile organic compounds such as trichloroethylene(TCE) and perchloroethylene(PCE), along with Agent Orange, that were issued around Camp Carroll US Army Base situated in Waegwan, Chilgok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Korea. The main objective of this study was to assess the exposure to TCE and PCE of residents of the area surrounding Camp Carroll. Methods: The TCE, PCE and trichloroethanol(TCEOH) concentrations in blood and trichlroroacetic acid(TCA) and TCEOH concentrations in urine were measured and analyzed in a total of 1,033 residents around Camp Carroll. TCA and TCEOH are metabolites of TCE and PCE, respectively. The information on demographic characteristics and exposure variables in relation to underground water were obtained through a questionnaire completed by the subjects. Results: TCE, PCE and TCEOH concentrations were not detected in blood. Detection rates of TCA and TECOH concentrations in urine were 98.5% and 36.6%, respectively. Creatinine-corrected average TCA and TCEOH concentrations were $12.23{\pm}23.81{\mu}g/g$ and $0.66{\pm}4.31{\mu}g/g$, respectively. A significant difference was not shown between the drinking group and no drinking group for underground water, which was assumed as a potential route of exposure to TCE and PCE through the consumption of ground water. However, females drinking ground water showed a significantly higher mean level of TCA in urine than did males. There was no significant difference according to drinking ground water as a potential source of exposure to TCE and PCE in residents around Camp Carroll. Conclusions: Considering the statistical analysis of factors affecting exposure to TCE and PCE in ground water along with previous reports, TCA in urine as exposure to TCE and PCE might not be appropriate because it is found in chlorinated drinking water. Therefore, TCA concentration in urine may be the result of drinking of chlorinated water.

인터넷 쇼핑몰에서의 제품구매시 브랜드와 가격의 상대적 중요성 지각에 관한 연구

  • LG 경제연구원이 발표한 보고서에 의하면, 국내 인터넷 쇼핑몰 시장이 2003년에는 1조 7000억원 규모를 상회할 것으로 예측되고 있다. 그러나 급격한 성장세를 보이고 있는 인터넷 쇼핑 시장규모에 비해 아직까지도 소비자와 관련된 연구는 많이 부족한 실정이다. 특히, 인터넷 쇼핑과 관련된 자료를 보면 소비자들은 인터넷을 통한 제품구매 시 여전히 불안감을 가지고 있는 것으로 나타나고 있음에도 불구하고 인터넷쇼핑에서의 지각된 위험에 대한 연구는 간헐적으로 이루어지고 있을 뿐이며, 이들 연구 역시 인터넷 쇼핑에서의 지각된 위험과 그 유형을 규명하는 데에만 초점을 맞추고 있어 지각된 위험수준에 따라 소비자의 구매행동이 어떻게 달라지는지에 대해서는 논의가 제대로 이루어지지 않고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 지각된 위험수준에 따른 소비자의 구매행동을 브랜드와 가격 의존도로 한정시켜 이들 요인들간의 상대적 중요성 지각을 살펴볼 것이다. 본 연구에서 다룰 연구문제를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 인터넷 쇼핑몰에서 제품 구매시 제품유형과 인터넷 쇼핑몰의 명성 그리고 인터넷 쇼핑경험의 세 변수는 소비자의 지각된 위험에 각각 어떤 영향을 미치며, 탐색재와 경험재, 인터넷 쇼핑몰 명성의 정도 그리고 인터넷 쇼핑경험의 유무에 따라 어떤 차이점이 존재하는가\ulcorner 둘째, 소비자의 지각된 위험의 수준과 브랜드와 가격의 상대적 중요성 지각과는 어떤 관계가 있는가\ulcorner 셋째, 브랜드와 가격의 상대적 중요성 지각정도에 두 매개변수인 제품 정보량과 제품 친숙도가 어떤 역할을 하는가\ulcorner 등이다.bition of severity of convulsions, decrease of seizures threshold, decrease of audiogenic seizures in rats of different strains and normalization of cerebral blood flow (measured by hydrogen test) were demonstrated in rats after i.c.v., intraperitoneally and orally administration, respectively. 자라에서 본 관류액(灌流液) pH와 심장박출량(心臟搏出量) (Cardiac Performance of Turtle Heart in Various pH of Perfusate)

  • Cardiac performances were analyzed in intact turtle heart(Amyda japonica), perfusing with turtle Ringer-Locke's solution containing various hydrogen ion concentration, at several levels of arterial and venous pressure. 1. Ventricular work increased when venous pressure, or venous filling pressure increased, and also increased when arterial pressure increased. 2. The higher the arterial pressure, the lower the cardiac to output, for arterial pressure is the resistance to the ventricular blood flow. On the other hand, in specific arterial pressure, cardiac output was proportional to the venous filling pressure. 3. Heart rates did not change significantly during the perfusion with Ringel· solution of various pH. 4. In the heart Perfused with Ringer solution of various pH, ventricular work was the highest at PH 7.6 (at 6 $cmH_2O$ arterial pressure and 8 $cmH_2O$ venous pressure, the ventricular work was 63.09m$\cdot$cm). However, within the range of pH $7.1{\sim}7.6$, there were no significant changes in cardiac output and ventricular work. Below the level of pH 7.0, ventricular work decreased to less than 56% of maximium value (at $6cmH_2O$ arterial pressure and $8cmH_2O$ venous Pressure, ventricular work was 36.0$gm{\cdot}$ at pH 7.0). At pH 7.7 ventricular work decreased to less than 48% of maximum value (ventricular work: 30.0 $gm{\cdot}$). The nature of the cardiac performance at the various arterial and venous pressures was similar to that of normal heart. 5. Turtle heart seemed to be relatively insensitive to acid-base disturbances. The mechanism of negative inotropic effect of hydrogen ion was discussed.

에틸렌옥사이드에 폭로된 흰쥐의 혈액에 형성된 헤모글로빈 부가체에 대한 연구 (A Study on Formation of Hemoglobin Adduct in Blood of Mice Inhaled with Ethylene Oxide)

  • Ethylene oxide is a genotoxic carcinogen with widespread uses as industrial chemical intermediate and gaseous sterilant. 2-hydroxyethylated N-terminal valine in Hb is a good biomarker for biological monitoring of ethylene oxide exposure, because of its stability. For measuring the hemoglobin adduct formed by exposure of ethylene oxide, we studied the determination of (N-2-hydroxy-ethyl)valine(HEV) in hemoglobin adduct by using GC/MS. Firstly we synthesized HEV with 2-amino-ethanol and bromoisovaleric acid(BIVA) and confirmed it with GC/MS-FID. Its fragmentations were m/z 116(base ion, M+-45) and m/z 130(M+-31). For measuring HEV with higher sensitivity, we use derivatives which were PFPITH(pentafluorophenylisothiocianate) and TBDMS (tributyldimethylsilylation) by using Edman procedure. Its fragmentation were m/z 425(M+-57), m/z 383(M+-99) and m/z 172(M+-310) by using GC/MS. We did biological monitoring for mice inhalation exposure with 400 ppm ethylene oxide. The concentrations of hemoglobin adduct were $168{\pm}3.8\;and\;512{\pm}04$(nmol g-1 globin) at 0.5 hr/day 400 ppm ethylene oxide inhalation exposure group, and $631{\pm}17\;and\;2265{\pm}9.4$(nmol g-1 globin) at 1.0 hr/day 400 ppm ethylene oxide inhalation exposure for 1 and 4 weeks, respectively. We confirmed that (N-2-hydroxy-ethyl)valine(HEV) of hemoglobin was a good biomarker for biomonitoring of ethylene oxide exposure, and can measured with derivatives such as PFPITH(pentafluorophenylisothiocianate) and TBDMS(tributyldimethylsilylation) by using GC/MS.
