  • Low-density polyethylene(LDPE)/Linear low-density polyethylene(LLDPE) blends were prepared by the compositional quenching process, a new morphology control method. The blends were characterized in terms of melting and crystallization behavior and mechanical properties. The results were compared with those of mechanically blended and solution blended samples. From DSC experiments, it was found that the melting temperatures and crystallization temperatures of the blends were dependent on the blending methods. In thermal property, LDPE/LLDPE blends prepared by compositional quenching process were similar to the blends prepared by solution blending but different from the blends prepared by mechanical blending. This result is explained to be due to the domain size dispersed in the matrix. The elongation-at-break and tensile strength of the samples blended by compositional quenching showed similar to those of the samples blended by solution blending method but larger than those of samples prepared by mechanical blending. Also, the Young's modulus showed the same trends as elongation-at-break. The tensile strength of the blends prepared by compositional quenching was not as high as the samples prepared by the other two blending methods.

  • This paper proposes a new approach to the optimization method of a blending process with neural network. The method is based on the error backpropagation learning algorithm for neural network. Since the neural network can model an arbitrary nonlinear mapping, it is used as a system solver. A fuzzy membership function is used in parallel with the neural network to minimize the difference between measurement value and input value of neural network. As a result, we can guarantee the reliability and stability of blending process by the help of neural network and fuzzy membership function.

  • Since the quality of final products is significantly affected by the homogeneity of powder mixture, the powder blending process has been regarded as one of the critical pharmaceutical unit processes, especially for solid dosage forms. Accordingly, the monitoring to determine a blending process' end-point based on a faster and more accurate in-line/on-line analysis has attracted enormous attentions recently. Among various analytical tools, NIR (near-infrared) spectroscopy has been extensively studied for PAT (process analytical technology) system due to its many advantages. In this study, NIR spectroscopy was employed with an optical fiber probe for the in-line monitoring of fluid-bed blending process. The position of the probe, the ratio of binary powder mixture, the powder size differential and the back-flush period of the shaking bag were examined as principal process parameters. During the blending process of lactose and mannitol powders, NIR spectra were collected, corrected, calibrated and analyzed using MSC and PLS method, respectively. The probe position was optimized. A reasonable end-point was predicted as 1,500 seconds based on 5% RSD value. As a consequence, it was demonstrated that the blending process using a fluid-bed processor has several advantages over other methods, and the application of NIRS with an optical fiber probe as PAT system for a fluid-bed blending process could be high feasible.

  • With the significant increase in spent ion-exchange resin generation, to meet the requirements of Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) of the Wolsong disposal facility in Korea, blending is considered as a method for enhancing disposal options for intermediate level waste from nuclear reactors. A mass balance formula approach was used to enable blending process with an appropriate mixing ratio. As a result, it is estimated around 44.3% of high activity spent resins can be blended with the overall volume of low activity spent resins at a 1:7.18 conservative blending ratio. In contrast, the reduction of high activity spent resins is considered a positive solution in reducing the amount of spent resins stored. In an economic study, the blending process has been proven to lower the disposal cost by 10% compared to current APR1400 treatment. Prior to commencing use of this blending method in Korea, coordinated discussion, and safety and health assessment should be undertaken to investigate the feasibility of fitting this blending method to national policy as a means of waste predisposal processing and management in the future.

  • The present contribution describes the application of elliptic-blending second moment closure to predict the gas cooling process of turbulent super-critical carbon dioxide flow in a square cross-sectioned duct. The gas cooling process under super-critical state experiences a drastic change in thermodynamic and transport properties. Redistributive terms in the Reynolds stress and turbulent heat flux equations are modeled by an elliptic-blending second moment closure in order to represent strongly non-homogeneous effects produced by the presence of walls. The main feature of Durbin's elliptic relaxation second moment closure that accounts for the nonlocal character of pressure-velocity gradient correlation and the near-wall inhomogeneity guaranteed by the elliptic blending second moment closure.

  • To improve the physical properties, such as swelling and flexibility, of the cotton fiber, sodium hydroxide or cellulase was used for pretreatment before the beating process. Titanium dioxide was blended during beating process to improve the fibrillation of cotton fibers and even distribution of fillers to cotton fibers. Blending with titanium dioxide during beating process, led to improve the tensile strength and beating degree This treatment also improved the opacity, resulted by well dispersed titanium dioxide during blending. By the blending of titanium dioxide during beating process, similar impact of cotton fiber with cellulase or sodium hydroxide pretreatment was achieved. To improve the tensile strength and opacity of cotton paper simultaneously, titanium dioxide blending in during beating process was found as effective treatment.

  • Blending various coals during the coke making process affects the quality of coke as well as the total energy required for the process. The mathematical model based on Merrick's work developed to predict the effect of blending coals on coke making process. The Crank-Nicholson method was used to solve the model equation to predict temperature distributions, a coking time, and a total energy required during the process. The developed model successfully applied to Kwang-Yang Steel Company's coke oven to validate the model performance. It is hoped that the model can serve as a guidelines on how to blend coals during the process.

  • In this paper, we provide an efficient hybrid video blending scheme to improve the naturalness of composite video in Poisson equation-based composite methods. In image blending process, various blending methods are used depending on the purpose of image composition. The hybrid blending method proposed in this paper has the characteristics that there is no seam in the composite video and the color distortion of the object is reduced by properly utilizing the advantages of Poisson blending and alpha blending. First, after blending the source object by the Poisson blending method, the color difference between the blended object and the original object is compared. If the color difference is equal to or greater than the threshold value, the object of source video is alpha blended and is added together with the Poisson blended object. Simulation results show that the proposed method has not only better naturalness than Poisson blending and alpha blending, but also requires a relatively small amount of computation.

  • Desalination plants are generally studied with higher operating costs compared to water supply facilities. This study was conducted to reduce the cost of water production and to preserve existing water resources. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to utilize the control valves to increase maximum efficiency, thereby reducing the power of the pumps and operating costs. Specific energy consumption was shown to reduce the process operating power by up to 1.7 times from 6.17 to $3.55kWh/m^3$ based on seawater reverse osmosis 60 bar. In addition, the water intake process was divided into pre, inter, and post-according to the use method of blasting, and the water treatment process was divided into pre, inter, and post blending. In order to reduce power consumption, the blending process was combined to operate the facility, which resulted in the reduction of power consumption in the order post > pre-inter> inter blending.

  • For the development of technique for isolation of naked barley starch from Youngsan variety, optimum conditions of the isolation process were investigated. The effect of blending was examined and the results showed that 29.7% starch yield was obtained by 6 times of blending. After the blending, the barley starch contained 3.2% protein, 0.7% fat, 0.4% fiber, 0.4% ash and 2.8% ${eta}$-glucan. The opitmum conditions of ${eta}$-glucanase treatment were studied and the results showed that the amount of ${eta}$-glucanase and barley flour-water ratio were 60,000 unit and 1/2, the optimum steeping temperature, pH were $45^{\circ}C$ and 6.5, respectively. The effect of alkali treatment which would be supposed to increase the yield and purity of the barley starch was also examined. 76.7% starch content was obtained by 2 hr of alkali treatment. After all the treatment of isolation process, the barley starch finally contained 0.2% protein and 0.1% ${eta}$-glucan.
