ECF and TCF bleaching methods are favored in bleaching plants over the world due to the increasing environment constraints. However, interaction of main stages(D and O stage) in ECF bleaching have not been understood completely yet. The degradation of holocellulose as a carbohydrate model compound was investigated by SEC(size exclusive chromatography) to estimate the change of its molecular weight distribution after O and D stage combination treatment. The molecular weight distribution of holocellulose was observed in two divisions(higher and lower molecular portions). It was also shown that DO sequence was more effective than OD, and DOD or ODO was more effective than DO. D stage had a little effect on the degradation of holocellulose, while the degradation of holocellulose increased as the time of the first O stage increased.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of xylanase pretreatment of the unbleached hardwood kraft pulp during the conventional Chlorine-Extraction- Hypochlorite (CEH) bleaching on pulp property. Optimum bleaching condition was evaluated by using Novozym produced from the fungus Humicola insolens. Also the effect of chelating agent prior to enzyme treatment was analyzed. The kappa number of enzymatic bleached pulp at the enzyme charge 10 IU/ml was slightly similar to that of bleached pulp without enzyme. By enzyme treatment, the chlorine charge in conventional CEH bleaching process of hardwood KP could be reduced by 17%, while no adverse effect on pulp yield and strength was. The optimum condition for enzyme pretreatment was 10 IU/ml xylanase charge, 3 to 4 hrs treatment, and 2% pulp consistency. In sugar composition in the enzyme pretreated pulp, arabinose and mannose were not much different, but more xylose was retained. This high content of hemicellulose in pulp seems to play an important role in pulp properties. The pulp pretreatment by chelating agent prior to enzyme treatment could improve the enzyme activity and enhance the bleaching effect at 0.2% diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) charges.

The bleaching effect of potato lipoxygenase Isoenzymes on ${\beta}-carotene$ was studied. Two lipoxygenase Isoenzymes(LOX-1, LOX-2) from potato tuber were purified by CM-cellulose, DEAE-cellulose ion exchange chromatography. LOX-1 and LOX-2 seemed to have bleaching effect on ${\beta}-carotene$ in the presence of linoleic acid, which the decrease in the formation of conjugated dienes. LOX-2 was founded to have a greater pigment bleaching activity than that of LOX-1.
Generally, hair treatments by complementary actions to give a sense of activity are permanent setting, dyeing, and bleaching, etc. In this study, we investigated the wave formation ability and hair damage occuring in permanent setting and bleaching process. The wave formation ability was evaluated by the differences of length and curl diameter after permanent setting. And the hair damage was also evaluated by the protein release ability and SEM of hair. The bleached hair immediately after permanent setting treatment has better wave formation ability, but much more damaged than the bleached hair after rinsing thoroughly with warm water. It was considered that the chain of hair keratin broke down easily by the bleaching action in the existence of permanent setting agents.
The purposes of this study were to examine the effect of 35% Carbamide Peroxide(CP) bleaching agent on the changes in physical and chemical characteristics of tooth. The effect of bleaching agent on enamel was analyzed using Hardness test, SEM and EDS. The microhardness between bleached groups after bleaching showed statistically significant difference according to the paired t-test. The bleached enamel surface showed apparent morphological changes compared to the enamel, which was stored in distilled water only. The difference of the total mineral contents for the distilled water and Carbamide Peroxide did not show statistical significance. These results demonstrated that bleaching using 35% Carbamide Peroxide were adversely affects application time of experimental group and may the safety of using these agents for a short time in dentist-monitored bleaching.
High diffraction efficiency holographic gratings in silver halide emulsion were fabricated by using reversal bleaching process. The diffraction efficiencies of gratings were improved greatly by applying rapid drying procedure with isopropyl alcohol after bleaching with optimized developers. The dependency of diffraction efficiencies on the different groups of developers, the concentration of bleaching solutions, and the drying methods are investigated experimentally and the results were analyzed theoretically. Same as usual reversal bleaching process, the fabricated gratings showed very low scttering compared to those made by conventional bleach process. The maximum diffraction efficiency was 88%.

Soda-AQ pulp made from sugarcane bagasse (SCB) were bleached in element chlorine free (ECF) sequence. To reduce chlorine dioxide use, final peroxide bleaching was introduced. Prior to peroxide bleaching, different chelating chemicals were applied for comparative analysis in ISO brightness and viscosity. When using equal total chlorine dioxide usage (4.5%), bleached SCB pulp using chelate and hydrogen peroxide (DEDQP) was reached 86.8% (DTPA), 86.4% (EDTA) ISO brightness, whereas bleached pulp using only hydrogen peroxide (DEDP) reached at 81.2% ISO brightness. Viscosity of DEDQP bleached pulp was 25.6 cPs (DTPA), 25.2 cPs (EDTA), And DEDP bleached pulp was shown 18.0 cPs viscosity. Decreasing of transition metal by chelate process led to improvements in final brightness along with higher viscosity. Due to EDTA is 5-7 times cheaper than DTPA, EDTA is recommended as chelating chemical prior to peroxide bleaching.

Xylanase (X) derived from Aurreobasidium pullulans and laccase-mediator system (LM) using Trichophyton sp. LKY-7 laccase (TrL) and N-hydroxy-2-pyridone analogue (NHP) as a mediator were applied in hardwood kraft pulp (HwKP) bleaching. The individual and the synergistic effects of X and LM stage were investigated in the enzymatic bleaching of HwKP. Also, the effects of subsequent alkaline extraction (E) and alkaline/hydrogen peroxide treatment (P) were examined. In X or LM treatment alone, an appreciable bleaching effect of HwKP was not observed, whereas subsequent E or P stage enhanced the increase of brightness and the decrease of kappa number. Especially, P stage significantly enhanced the bleaching effect of pulp. Bleaching of HwKP with XLM sequentially gave significantly higher pulp brightness and lower kappa number than that obtained after the treatment of HwKP with X+LM simultaneously. When HwKP was sequentially treated with XLM followed by P stage, the brightness increased by about 11% ISO and the kappa number decreased by about 3.6 in comparison with the initial pulp. Xylanase and laccase were strongly inactivated by NHP both in the absence and the presence of pulp.
In this paper, the damage of hair and wave shape in process of the dyeing, bleaching, and permanent hair wave are simulated. The virgin hair that do not process the dyeing, bleaching, and permanent hair wave becomes stable in the scale type. On the other hand, the hair that deals with the dyeing, bleaching, and permanent hair wave is heavily damaged in the scale type. It is observed that the higher pH is decided, the higher the hair is damaged because the scale damage in the bleaching hair is more heavily damaged than the dyeing hair. In case of executing the permanent hair wave, the processing of the plaine rinsing becomes less in the scale damage of the hair and better in the wave form. Therefore, it is found that the processing of the plaine rinsing to improve the wave form and to prevent the hair damage is needed.
The physico-chemical characteristics by bleaching treatments were assessed by several instrumental analyses such as surface morphology, chemical structural change, color change as well as tensile strength. The change of morphological characteristic was observed through scanning electron microscope(SEM). The observation of the fine structure on hair surface by SEM showed the bleached hair had much damaged to hair cuticle, and some of cuticle surface were worn away. To investigate the chemical structural changes in hair keratin, the cross-sections of hair samples were directly analysed using Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy(FT-IRM). The results showed the cysteic acid S=O band intensity was distinctively increased by performing the bleaching treatment. The cleavage of cystine was appeared to proceed primarily through the sulfur-sulfur (-S-S-) fission whereby cysteic acid was formed as a principal oxidation products. The distribution of amide I band in hair keratin was determined by attenuated total reflectance(ATR) FT-IR mapping image. The results showed that the outer side of hair cortex was more damaged than the inner side of the hair cortex. Also, during chemical bleaching of the hair with alkaline peroxide, the hair was turned to reddish yellow due to the oxidative degradation of eumelanin. This means the eumelanin is more unstable than pheomelanin in chemical oxidation. With bleaching, the tensile strength was also reduced as a results of the chemical oxidation.
