  • Recently, the pile driving or blasting works are increasingly done in many areas to perform large scale construction projects. The vibrations from these blasting works may affect the properties of concrete, especially young concrete. The purpose of present study is to explore the effects of vibration at early ages on the properties of concrete. To this end, comprehensive experimental study is conducted in the present study. The major test variables are peak particle velocity or vibration velocity and the age at vibration. The compressive strengths and bond strengths are measured for all the specimens at 28days after casting. The duration of vibration is fixed to 30 minutes for all cases. The results indicate that the strength increases for vibration velocity less than about 0.25cm/sec and decreases for vibration velocity larger than 0.5cm/sec. The effect of age at vibration is not pronounced and shows almost similar behavior for the age at vibration of 0 to 12 hours range. The present study provides some important guidelines to control the construction or vehicle vibrations for the concrete at very early ages.

  • In this study, the blast-induced vibration effects on the structural stability of the adjacent tunnel were estimated with respect to the allowable peak particle velocity (PPV). The blasting distance from the tunnel satisfying the allowable PPV was estimated based on the analytical solutions, United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) suggestions, and the equations used in the subway in Seoul. The allowable blasting distance was estimated by using finite difference analysis (FDA) and the behavior of the concrete lining and rock bolts was examined and the stability of those was estimated during the blast. Research results show that the blast-induced vibration effects on the structural stability are negligible for the concrete lining but relatively large for the rock bolts.

  • Experimental blast studies were carried out in a limestone quarry to study the effects of blasting on structures. To have an in-depth understanding of the possible relation between parameters like vibrations, frequency and scale distance and ten trial blast were conducted. 29 monitoring stations were located in such a pattern to give a true representation of blast induced vibrations for the entire mining in this area. The vibrations were monitored in the vicinity of structures surrounding the quarry in the direction towards the village, road, railway line, office building, etc. Scale distances were determined to identify the maximum charge permissible to cause damage to structures.

  • In this study, the field tests were performed on V-cut, PLHBM 1 hole, PLHBM 2 hole in gneiss area in order to compare the effects of the vibration decay of a tunnel cut-hole according to the number of PLHBM holes with scaled distance. Based on the prediction equation of blasting vibration from the result of the tests, the decay rate of vibration were confirmed 21.8~61.1% using PLHBM 1 hole, 35.7~79.3% using PLHBM 2 hole for scaled distance within $10{\sim}100m/kg^{1/2}$ on the basis of V-cut PPV. As the scaled distance was increased, the effect of vibration decay was decreased. The effect of vibration decay of cut-hole for intial PLHBM 1~2 hole was significantly high.

  • In this study, effects that thermal stress and water pressure have on the deformation behaviour of granite specimens recovered in Gagok Mine are estimated. To analyze effects of the thermal stress and water pressure on the deformation behaviour, granite specimens were preheated with cycles of predetermined temperatures ranging $200^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$ and 500, 600, $700^{\circ}C$ specimens were pressurized to 7.5 MPa. The deformation behaviour of the specimens had been studied by performing uniaxial compressive tests. Axial and lateral strains of specimens were found to increase with increasing temperature, and above $600^{\circ}C$, the increase of strains were more pronounced. The reduction trends of uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus with temperature appeared to follow an exponential decay function. Specimens under water pressure showed the more inelastic deformation characteristics, which means that water pressure has an effect on the widening and extending of micro-cracks existed in preheated specimens.

  • The most widely used method for determining the blast effects of explosives is the Trauzl lead block test. This test is used to measure the explosive power (strength) of a substance by determining volume increase, which is produced by the detonation of a test explosive charged in the cavity of a lead block with defined quantity and size. In this paper, Trazul lead block test and AUTODYN numerical analysis were conducted to evaluate the coupling medium effect of blast hole. The effects of coupling materials can be expressed as the expansion of the cavity in a standard lead block through explosion of the explosives. The tests were conducted with emulsion explosives. The coupling mediums used as the filling material around a explosive charge were air, sand, water and gelatine. Results of test and numerical analysis showed that expansion of lead block were much more affected by water&gel than by sand and air. The water and gel showed similar results. As expected, the transmitted pressure and dynamic strain was higher in water and gelatine coupled blast hole than in air and sand.

University of Missouri-Rolla, Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center 에서 이루어 졌으며 대부분의 실험은 500grain/ft 선형성형폭약을 사용하여, 기폭 후 철제목표물을 관통한 형상 및 관통 단면을 관찰하는 형식으로 이루어졌다.

  • Empirical model, phenomenological model, and CFD model have been used to evaluate the blast effects produced by explosion of explosives, flammable gas and liquid or dust. TNT equivalence method which is one of empirical models has been widely used as it is simple. In this study, new peak overpressure-scaled distance and scaled impulse-scaled distance equations are induced through fitting data from the curves given by TNT equivalence method. If the TNT equivalent mass is calculated, it is possible to estimate the peak overpressure and impulse using the regression equations. Differences of peak overpressure with yield factor which is a component of TNT equivalence method are found to be great in near-by distances from explosion source where the increase in overpressure is very steep, but the differences are getting smaller as the distances increase.

  • A series of nurmerical analysse for the earhtquake of Iran railway tunnles under construction by NATM(New Astrian Tunnelling Method) were careid out throuth a pseudo-dynamic analyses techique used in a FFM computer program, DWTAP(Daewoo Tunnel Analysis Program), and the results are described in the paper. The analyses were performErl for two case;one is for the primary supports and the other is for the rompletEd permanent roncrete lining. The horizontal and verical groW1d accelerations for the design were estimatEd as 0.34 g and 0.23 g, respectively based on the historical reismic rerords in the proj3et area and the empirical equations. The results show that the turmel would be safe W1der the anticipitOO earthquake motion with the permanent roncrete lining, but some minor cracks rnigt be developErl in the primary shotcrete lining without any significant structural damages.
