Korea Institute of Geology Mining and Materials(KIGAM) cooperating with Southern Methodist University(SMU) has been operating seismo-acoustic array in Chul-Won area to discriminate man-made explosions from natural earthquakes since at the end of July 1999. In order to characterize propagation parameters of detected seismo-acoustic signal and to associate these signals as a blast event accompanying seismic and acoustic signals simultaneously it is necessary to understand infrasound wave propagation in the atmosphere. Two comparable Effective Sound Velocity Structures(ESVS) in atmosphere were constructed by using empirical model (MSISE90 and HWM93) and by aerological observation data of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) at O-San area. Infrasound propagation path computed by empirical model resulted in rare arival of refracted waves on ground less than 200km from source region. On the other hand Propagation paths by KMA more realistic data had various arrivals at near source region and well agreement with analyzed seismo-acoustic signals from Chul-Won data. And infrasound propagation in specific direction was very influenced by horizontal wind component in that direction. Linear travel time curve drawn up by 9 days data of the KMA in autumn season showed 335.6m/s apparent sound velocity in near source region. The propagation characteristics will be used to associate seismo-acoustic signals and to calculate propagation parameters of infrasound wave front.
The present study numerically investigated the deformation of the interface of two-phase fluids flow in a blast furnace. To simulate three-dimensional(3D) incompressible viscous two-phase flow in the furnace filled with the air and molten iron, the volume of fluid(VOF) method based on the finite volume method has been utilized. In addition, the porous medium with the porosity has been considered as the bed of the particles such as cokes and char etc. For the comparison, the single phase flow and the two-phase flow without the porosity have been simulated. The two-phase flow without porosity condition revealed the smooth parabolic profile of the free surface near the outlet. However, the free surface under the porosity condition formed the viscous finger when the free surface was close to the outlet. This viscous finger accelerated the velocity of the free surface falling and the outflow velocity of the fluids near the outlet.

In this paper, numerical analysis with varying distance and burial depth was performed to recommend the blasting vibration control standard for pre-insulated pipes. The blasting load model applied in the numerical analysis was verified to the comparison with the results of the field tests. It was determined from the results of the numerical analysis that the effective stress either exceeds or approaches the allowable stress of the inner steel pipe for vibration velocity greater than 4.0cm/sec while stability is obtained for vibration velocity below 4.0cm/sec. Therefore, it was determined that the blasting vibration control criteria for pre-insulated pipes must not exceed 4.0cm/sec.
Underground water-sealed gas storage caverns have become the primary method for strategic storage of LPG. Previous studies of excavation blasting effects on large-scale underground water-sealed gas storage caverns are rare at home and abroad. In this paper, the blasting excavation for underground water-sealed propane storage caverns in Yantai was introduced and field tests of blasting vibration were carried out. Field test data showed that the horizontal radial velocity had a major controlling effect in the blasting vibration and frequencies would not cause the vibration velocity concentration effects. In terms of the influence of blasting vibration on adjacent caverns, the dynamic finite element model in LS-DYNA soft was established, whose reliability was verified by field test data. The numerical results indicated the near-blasting side was primary zone for the structural failure and tensile failure tended to occur in the middle of the curved wall on the near-blasting side. Meanwhile, the safety criterions for adjacent caverns based on stress wave theory and according to statistic relationship between peak effective tensile stress and peak particle velocities were obtained, respectively. Finally, with Safety Regulations for Blasting in China (GB6722-2014) taken into account, a final safety criterion was proposed.

The Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is a system, which is utilized for solving complicated problems by using nonlinear equations. This study aims to investigate compressive strength, rebound hammer number (RN), and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) of sustainable concrete containing various amounts of fly ash, silica fume, and blast furnace slag (BFS). In this study, the artificial neural network technique connects a nonlinear phenomenon and the intrinsic properties of sustainable concrete, which establishes relationships between them in a model. To this end, a total of 645 data sets were collected for the concrete mixtures from previously published papers at different curing times and test ages at 3, 7, 28, 90, 180 days to propose a model of nine inputs and three outputs. The ANN model's statistical parameter R2 is 0.99 of the training, validation, and test steps, which showed that the proposed model provided good prediction of compressive strength, RN, and UPV of sustainable concrete with the addition of cement.
We carried out high-resolution(FWHM=3' .3) HI 21 cm observations of the supernova remnant(SNR) PKS0607+17 and HII region S261 using Arecibo 305-m telescope. The observation was to investigate whether the high-velocity(HV) gas detected in the southern area of PKS0607+17 by Koo & Heiles(1991) is physically associated with the SNR or not. The velocity of the HV gas ranges from +64 km/s to +87 km/s, which is difficult to result from the Galactic rotation. The HV gas could be the gas accelerated by supernova blast wave. However, because the observation of Koo and Heiles(1991) was carried out using Hat Creek radio telescope(FWHM $\simeq$ 36'), the association of the HV gas with the SNR could not be investigated. Using the Arecibo HI 21cm data, we have found that the HV gas appears m the southern part of the SNR and its velocity ranges from +61 km/s to +77 km/s. But the HV gas is scattered m the whole field, not only toward PKS0607+17 but also outside the SNR Accordingly the HV gas is probably not associated with the SNR, but is accidentally aligned along the same line of sight toward the SNR. Instead we have found that HI clouds at low velocities could be possibly associated with the SNR. In Arecibo HI 21cm channel maps the HI gas seems to surround the southern boundary of the SNR at $V_{LSR}$ = +19.6 ~ +40.2 km/s. But because the region of the Arecibo HI 21cm observation is not wide enough to examine the HI gas distribution, we investigated this area using the Berkely low-latitude HI survey data(Weaver & Williams 1974) too. There we found HI gas surrounding the radio continuum boundary of PKS0607+17 at $V_{LSR}$ = +21.6 ~ +258 km/s. It is possible that this HI gas is associated with the SNR, in which case, the velocity of the SNR $V_o$$\simeq$ +26 km/s, its distance d $\simeq$ 12.5 kpc and its radius R $\simeq$ 145 pc. If we assume that the expansion velocity is ~10 km/s, then the age of the SNR is $\sim4.4\times10^6$ years. PKS0607+17 could be one of the oldest SNRs in the Galaxy. We also studied HI propertities of the HII region S261, which is $\sim1^{\circ}$ away from PKS0607+17. There has been no high-resolution m 21 cm observational study on S261. We discovered HI cloud located at the north-eastern part of S261 at $V_{LSR}$ = +5 km/s ~ +10 km/s, which is possibly associated with the HII region. The central velocity of the HI cloud $V_{LSR}$ = +7.2 km/s and the corresponding distance d = 1.5 kpc. This velocity is comparable to the radio recombination line velocities.

Recently, expansion of urban and social infrastructures is planned to go through the transfer of military facilities or crossing the infrastructures via underground tunnels. However, when crossing facilities such as ammunition and explosive storages, a high level of safety assessment is required to prevent an accidental explosion of ground ammunition. In this study, a case study was conducted to evaluate the effect of blasting for the construction of tunnel on the ground ammunition facilities. The design section of Sinansan train operated by the Korea Railroad Authority with agreement of the Ministry of National Defense was selected. For the purpose of this study, the vibration velocity due to explosion was predicted by using GTS-NX, a numerical analysis program. Through literature review, it was confirmed that the vibration velocity of 0.2cm/sec can be a safety evaluation standard. These safety evaluation indicators and procedures used in this study can be utilized as an index of safety evaluation in the planning of social infrastructures that cross the ammunition facilities in the future.
In this study, a model was developed to predict the peak particle velocity (PPV) that affects people and the surrounding environment during blasting. Four machine learning models using the k-nearest neighbors (kNN), classification and regression tree (CART), support vector regression (SVR), and particle swarm optimization (PSO)-SVR algorithms were developed and compared with each other to predict the PPV. Mt. Yogmang located in Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do was selected as a study area, and 1048 blasting data were acquired to train the machine learning models. The blasting data consisted of hole length, burden, spacing, maximum charge per delay, powder factor, number of holes, ratio of emulsion, monitoring distance and PPV. To evaluate the performance of the trained models, the mean absolute error (MAE), mean square error (MSE), and root mean square error (RMSE) were used. The PSO-SVR model showed superior performance with MAE, MSE and RMSE of 0.0348, 0.0021 and 0.0458, respectively. Finally, a method was proposed to predict the degree of influence on the surrounding environment using the developed machine learning models.
As a new type of flame, tubular flame has attracted much attention from a fundamental viewpoint and many experimental and theoretical studies have been made on its characteristics. Recently, it is also recognized that the tubular flame has great potentials as practical combustor because its stability range is very wide in fuel concentration and also in injection velocity. Thus, tubular flame burners have been developed for various kinds of fuels. They are gaseous fuels of methane, propane, hydrogen, and by-product fuels gases in steel making processes including BFG (Blast Furnace Gas), LDG (LD Converter Gas), and COG (Cokes-Oven Gas), liquid fuels of kerosene, A-type and C-type heavy oils, and a solid fuel of biomass powder. In this paper, recent developments of the tubular flame burners have been briefly introduced.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete by the non-destructive testing. Main experimental variables were the replacement level of recycled aggregate and blast-furnace slag, which were divided into two series according to recycled aggregate maximum size. Test results showed that a recycled aggregate had a significant influence on the non-destructive testing results, such as rebound number, Ultrasonic pulse velocity, and frequency. A prediction model of compressive strength considering the replacement level of recycled aggregate was suggested by multi-regression analysis and was compared with test results.
