In the fabrication of steel bridges, blast cleaning prior to painting is carried out on the steel members to clean the forged surface and to increase the adhesive property of the applied painting systems. The effect of blast cleaning on the fatigue strength improvement of the weld joints, however, is not clear. In this study, Almen strips and steel specimens were blast-treated, conforming to ten types of blast-cleaning conditions deducted from the blast-cleaning conditions of seven steel structure fabrication companies. The arc height, roughness, hardness, and compressive residual stress were measured before and after the implementation of the ten blast-cleaning methods, and the relationship between the blast conditions and the measured values was studied. The geometry of the weld toe and the compressive residual stress near the weld toe were also measured before and after the blast cleaning of the butt-welded joints, and fatigue tests were carried out on the butt weld joints. The test results showed that blast cleaning significantly increases the fatigue strength and limit.

Blast cleaning has been applied in steel bridges for cleaning forged surface and increasing adhesive property of applied coating systems. Blasting is the operation of cleaning or preparing a surface by forcible propelling a stream of abrasive metals against it. Blast cleaning may improve surface geometry and induce compressive residual stress, and eventually may increase fatigue life of weld joints. In this paper, fatigue tests were carried out on three types of non-load-carrying fillet welded cruciform joints, as-welded joints, blast-treated joints, and stress-relieved joints after blasting, in order to investigate effect of blast cleaning on fatigue behavior of the weld joints. By Blast cleaning, the weld toe radius was increased by 29% and compressive residual stress was induced near weld toes. Blast cleaning increased fatigue life and fatigue endurance limit of the weld joints. When the applied stress ranges decreased, the increment in fatigue life became larger. About a 150% increase in fatigue limit could be realized by using blast cleaning.

Blasting has been applied in newly-built steel structures for cleaning forged surfaces and increasing the adhesive property of applied painting systems. However, the effect of the blast cleaning on fatigue behavior of welded joints is not clear. In this paper, fatigue tests were carried out on out-of-plane gusset welded joints and the effect of the blast cleaning on the fatigue behavior was studied. The curvature radius at the weld toe of the surface-treated specimens by using the blast method is larger than that of as-welded specimens. By the blast cleaning compressive residual stresses were induced into weld toes. The experimental results showed that the fatigue life of surface-treated specimens is longer than that of as-welded specimens, even though the fatigue life of surface-treated specimens and that of as-welded specimens are not clearly different in the high stress range. About a 160% increase in fatigue limit could be realized by using blast cleaning.

iFLASH System is new structural floor system which consists of sandwich panels filled with nano-composite. The nano-composite has low specific gravity and high bonding strength with steel plates. The bonding strength is one of important factors for structural performance of iFLASH System and it can further be improved by surface preparation such as blast metal cleaning. However, using none blast steel plates is recommended since surface preparation generates additional fabrication time and cost. In this study, a bonding strength test and bending experiment were conducted to check feasibility of applying none blast steel plates to iFLASH System. Moreover, stress in bonding plane between steel plates and nano-composite was analytically evaluated by finite element method. Consequently, flexural capacity of the specimen was 11% higher than theoretically calibrated value and its flexural behavior was structurally efficient without defect of bonding.
Ballast gravel in a railroad field is often polluted by grease and heavy metals. In this paper, the performances of a dry cleaning method for polluted ballast gravel in which pollutants on the gravel surface can be physically removed was extensively studied. A polluted ballast cleaning device able to shoot emery blasting media onto the surface using compressed air was prepared. Polluted ballast gravel was put into this device for cleaning, with the treatment time varied from 1 to 10 min. The cleaning efficiency of the total petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals were studied. The total petroleum hydrocarbon removal efficiency was 70-80% for gravels sampled from a locomotive waiting line, while it was 40-60% for gravels sampled from a turnout area. The heavy metal removal efficiency exceeded 90% for copper and lead, while it was 65-80% for nickel and zinc. This system was found to be effective for the remediation of polluted ballast gravels.
An experimental research to evaluate the slip coefficients of high-strength friction-type bolt connection of weathering steel plate has been performed in this paper. The test specimens with mill scale or shot blast had been exposed in open air during 3 and 6 months and cleaning of rust surface by hand brushing, power tool brushing and no cleaning was considered. The relaxation of bolt clamping force had also been measured during 600 hours. It was found that slip coefficients increased to the value over 0.6 with exposure except mill scale surface by power tool brushing. The relaxation of bolt tension force in exposed specimens also increased and maximum value reached to about 10%.
In an integrated steel mill, zinc (Zn) inputs from raw materials and steel scrap are enriched in the dusts and sludges collected from gas and water cleaning systems. The reuse of these dusts and sludges must be controlled within certain limit to avoid Zn accumulation and related operational problems in blast furnace. An integrated system has been established at China Steel Corporation (CSC) to enhance the internal reuse of Zn-containing dust/sludge while keeping Zn input within control lim it. However. the performance of this system has not been very satisfactory until one and half years ago when a rationalization process was initiated. The essence of this rationalization process, the recent improvements in Zn control and dust and sludge reuse are reported and discussed.
In construction of new ships and large steel bridges in Korea, pre-construction primers (PCP), also known as shop primer, are routinely used and retained as an integral part of the protective coating system. Retention of PCP's can significantly reduce building schedule and cost. Retaining PCP through the so-called "sweep blasting" procedure eliminates or minimizes the necessity of a second blast operation, thus shortening overall schedule as well as reducing labor cost and hazardous waste disposal cost. This study evaluates the feasibility of retaining PCP as the part of primer for high performance protective coating systems applied to ships' hull, bottom and ballast tanks. Upon proving that the retention of the PCP is a viable option, the process of coating application can he improved significantly in terms of cost and working schedule of new ships and large steel bridges. Results indicate that use of the PCP via sweeping blasting in conjunction with standard high performance protective coating systems does not degrade the overall performance of the coating systems. At the same time, it is also highly recommended that the secondary surface preparation should consist of grit blasting of weld burnt and other damaged areas to SSPC SP-IO grade (Sa 2.5 Gr.), Near White Blast Cleaning with proper application and attention to detail.

The electrostatic precipitator(ESP) is a device for removing particulate pollutants in the form of either a solid (dust or fumes) or a liquid (mist) from a gas using an electrostatic force, Electrostatic precipitation has been widely used for cleaning gas from almost all industrial processes with a medium to large gas volume(>2,000 $m^3/min$), including utility boilers, blast furnaces, and cement kilns. ESP is also in wide use for air cleaning in living environments (home, offices, hospitals, etc.) ESP has large advantages over other particulate control device : a low operating cost, a high collection performance, and ease of maintenance. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the smoke removal of an air cleaner by adjusting variable frequency and monitoring of turbidity three results of this research are as follows ;the first is the best efficient switching frequency which is 60Hz, the second is the smoke removal time which is obtained to 9 seconds, third is that the best efficient firing angle is $90^{\circ}$ As a result, the switching trigger frequency and SCR gate firing angle is very important factor to predict the best collection efficiency.
An experimental research to evaluate the slip coefficient of high-strength slip-critical-type bolt connection of weathering steel plate has been performed in this paper. Experiments were performed with several surface conditions such as clean mill scale with hand or power brush cleaning, shot blast cleaned, inorganic zinc primer coated, and weather coated surfaces. Also, the relaxation of bolt clamping force was estimated during 500 hours. It was ascertained from the experiments that slip coefficients are greater than 0.40 in all faying surface conditions except mill scale surface with power brushing. The quantify of relaxation depended on the surface conditions and was $3{\sim}8%$, i.e., less than 10%.
