Micro forming is an appropriate process to manufacture very small metal parts which can be employed in the field of electronic devices or electrically controlled mechanical systems. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the influences of both blankholding force and blank diameter for the deep drawing of very small cups. It is essential to control the blankholding force because improper force can result in defects such as wrinkles in the flange or cracks in the corner of the drawn cups. In the current study blankholding force was controlled by springs connected to the blankholder of a press die. Exchangeable bushing dies with various die-corner radii were also used. To obtain the limit drawing ratio for each working condition several sizes of circular specimens were prepared using blanking tools. Beryllium copper(C1720) alloy sheet of $50{\mu}m$ thickness was chosen for the experiments. The maximum limit drawing ratio of 2.1 was achieved experimentally for the conditions of the blankholder force(BHF)=5.3kgf and Rd=0.3mm. Both thickness and hardness along the central section of drawn cups were measured and compared for different drawing conditions. It was found that the deviation of measured data in the thickness and hardness distribution increases with increasing blankholder force and blank diameter.
Stainless steels are alloy steels with iron as the primary constituent and chromium, nickel, and manganese as principal alloying elements. In addition to automotive, construction, and transportation industries, stainless steels have a variety of applications in the food, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries. Some common products made from stainless steel are sinks, wash basins, kitchen vessels, and cutlery. Among ferritic stainless steels, type 409 can be cold-formed easily and are used for deep-drawn parts such as vessels for the chemical and food industries. In this study, forming analyses and experiments to prevent the occurrence of inferiority such as wrinkles, crack, and neck for automotive muffler part are carried out to save the optimal conditions during forming by modifying the blank size and shape, blank holding force etc.
In the drawing of large size automotive panels, elastic deflection of die components is induced by the contact force between them. The deflection is nonuniform and locally distributed, and results in nonuniform material flow. In order to arrange such a nonuniform die gap, a correcting operation, so called die spotting, is inevitable, which requires trial and error works and consuming time. A prediction of the bending deflection prior to a try-out must be useful to reduce the die spotting time. In this study, drawing process of a front fender is simulated first. and the deflection of the blank holder is calculated from the contact force imposing on th blank holder. The balance block heights ensuring a uniform deflection are optimized by the analysis and design of experiments.
A drawbead die for the experimental determination of drawbead forces was newly introduced in this paper. While the conventional Nine's drawbead die inevitably includes effects of a blank holding force on the measured drawbead forces, the new drawbead die excludes it by removing the blank holder contact in the dieface. Therefore, the new drawbead die can provide more realistic drawbead forces without considering somewhat arbitrary effect of blank holder with the computational procedure of forming process. The drawbead opening force and restraining force obtained by adopting the two experimental dies were compared for the validation of accuracy in the FEM simulation of automotive fender forming process. The compared section strains and draw-ins confirmed that the present drawbead die provides better drawbead forces for an accurate FEM simulation of sheet metal forming process.
The effect of blank holding force on thickness variation in simultaneous sheet forming with rectangular shape and circular has been demonstrated. Because has investigated an effect on formability of magnesium sheet, in this paper, the effect of punch radius on formability have been thinning, various crack phenomena and forming velocity. By simultaneously forming process with circular and rectangular shape, the data of simultaneously forming process with circular and rectangular shape will used to a part development such as notebook computer case, cell phone and bipolar plate of fuel cell.
It is well known, for many years, that deep drawability can be improved by applying variable blank holding force. To apply variable blank holding force during cup during, we set up pressure controlling system on experimental hydraulic press, and the pressure control system is often called NC(Numerically Controlled) cushion system Using the NC cushion system we compared the drawability of square steel cups with NC cushion and that with conventional cushion. The results show drawability is greatly improved when the pressure control curve is designed in a S-shaped curve. This paper includes design details of the NC cushion system and experimental analysis of drawability with experimental NC cushion system.

To apply variable blank holding force during cup drawing, we set up cushion pressure control system on the hydraulic press, and the pressure control system is often called NC(Numerically Controlled) cushion system. A cushion pressure control experiment was carried out using the NC cushion and it was shown that the proposed system produced good performance. The comparison of drawability of square cups with and without NC cushion showed that the drawability could be greatly improved when S-shaped pressure curve was applied. This paper includes design details of the NC cushion system and experimental analysis of drawability with NC cushion system.
In automotive industries, stamping of laser-welded blank gives many merits which brings about dimensional accuracy, strong body assembly and high productivity. However the welding of blanks with different thickness or/and different strength materials introduces many challenging formability problems for process development and tool design. In this paper, the deformation characteristics for deep drawing process of laser-welded blank with different thickness sheets are investigated by experiment and FEM simulation. And also the optimal location of weld line in laser-welded blank with different thickness sheets is calculated to compensate for the movement of weld line on deep drawing process. In addition, the effect of location of weld line is clarified using FEM simulation.
High-speed forming process is the forming technology that deforms the blank in a very short time, with the strain rate of the blank above 1000 s−1. Among many high-speed forming processes, electromagnetic forming (EMF) employs the Lorentz force when deforms the blank. Because of the high strain rate, the formability of the blank can be improved. However, when the blank is formed into rather complex shapes, it is bounced from the die and the wrinkles are generated. Therefore, electrohydraulic forming (EHF) is suggested in this study to reduce the bouncing problem of the blank. EHF is a high-speed forming that uses high voltage discharge in liquid. The shockwave resulting from the electric discharge propagates to the blank and it deforms the blank into the die. In this study, two high-speed forming processes, EMF and EHF were compared numerically with trapezoidal middle block die. This comparison showed that EMF cannot deform the blank into the die because of the bouncing, while EHF can overcome the bouncing problem and deform the blank into the die shape successfully.
Sheet metal forming process is a non-linearity problem which is affected by various process variables, such as geometric shape of punch and die, frictional characteristic, etc.. Therefore, the knowledge of the influence of the process variables is needed in the design of sheet metal working processes. In this paper, cylindrical cup drawing tests for blank holding force, punch speed and lubrication between sheet material and tool were carried out to investigate the influence upon sheet formability. Experimental results were discussed about the defects on the deformation behaviors during the forming process.
