  • The accurate prediction of the flow and the pressure distribution near the tip of the blade is crucial in determining the tip vortex cavitation inception which usually occurs on the blade tip or inside the core of the tip vortex just downstream of the blade tip. An improved boundary element method is applied to the prediction of the flow around propeller blades, with emphasis at the tip region. In the method, the Blow adapted grid and a higher order panel method, which combines a hyperboloidal panel geometry with a hi-quadratic dipole distribution, are used in order to accurately model the trailing wake geometry and the highly rolled-up regions in the wake. The method is applied to several propeller geometries and the results have been found to agree well to the existing experimental data. Inviscid flow methods are able to predict the pressures at the tip as well as the shape of the trailing wake. On the other hand, they are unable to determine the flow inside the viscous core of the tip vortex, where cavitation inception often occurs. Thus, a method is presented that treats the flow inside the viscous core. The inner flow is treated with a 2-D Clavier-stokes solution without making any assumptions for axisymmetric flow and conicity of the flow along the tip trajectory. The method can thus allow the treatment of general propeller blade configurations. The velocity and pressure distributions inside the core are shown and compared to those from other numerical methods.

  • For the improvement of aerodynamic performance of the turbine blade in a turbopump for the liquid rocket engine, the optimization of turbine profile shape has been studied. The turbine in a turbopump in this study is a partial admission of impulse type, which has twelve nozzles and supersonic inflow. Due to the separated nozzles and supersonic expansion, the flow field becomes complicates and shows oblique shocks and flow separation. To increase the blade power, redesign of the blade shape using CFD and optimization method was attempted. The turbine cascade shape was represented by four design parameters. For optimization, genetic algorithm based upon non-gradient search has been selected as a optimizer. As a result, the final blade has about 4 percent more blade power than the initial shape.

  • Numerical calculations are performed to simulate the film cooling effect of turbine blade tip with squealer rim. Because of high temperature of inside rim, squealer rim is damaged easily. Therefore many various cooling systems were used. The calculations are based on 100,000 Reynolds number in linear cascade model. A blade has 2% tip clearance and 8.4% rim height. The axial chord length and turning angle is 237mm, 126$^{\circ}$. Numerical calculations are performed without and with film cooling. In a film cooling in the cavity, hot spots of cavity were cooled effectively. However hot spots of suction side rim still remains. The CFD results show that the circulation flow in cavity of squealer tip affects the temperature rise of squealer rim. To maintain the blade integrity and avoid the excessive hot spot of blade, rearrangement of cooling hole is needed.

  • It is difficulty to calculate velocity circulation in centrifugal pump impeller outlet accurately. Velocity circulations of a double-blade pump impeller outlet were calculated with Stodola formula, Weisner formula and Stechkin formula. Simultaneously, the internal flow of impeller for the double-blade pump were measured with PIV technology and average velocity circulations at the 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 times of design flow were obtained. All the experimental values were compared with the above calculation values at the three conditions. The results show that calculation values of velocity circulations with Weisner formula is close to the experimental values. On the basis of the above, velocity circulations of impeller outlet were corrected. The results of experimental verification show that the corrected calculation errors, whose maximum error is 3.65%, are greatly reduced than the uncorrected calculation errors. The research results could provide good references for establishment of theoretical head and multi-condition hydraulic optimization of double-blade pumps.

  • In the present study, unsteady flow analysis has been conducted to investigate the blade forces and wake flow around a hybrid street-lamp having a vertical-axis small wind turbine and a photovoltaic panel. Uniform velocities of 3, 5 and 7 m/s are applied as inlet boundary condition. Relatively large vortex shedding is formed at the wake region of the photovoltaic panel, which affects the increase of blade torque and wake flow downstream of the wind turbine. It is found that blade force has a good relation to the variation of the angle of attack with the rotation of turbine blades. Variations in the torque on the turbine blade over time create a cyclic fluctuation, which can be a source of turbine vibration and noise. Unsteady fluctuation of blade forces is also analyzed to understand the nature of the vibration of a small wind turbine over time. The detailed flow field inside the turbine blades is analyzed and discussed.

  • In this work, optimization of blade shape for the improvement of mixture formation and vortex of intake port was performed by numerically, and the combustion performance of CI engine with optimized blade shape was investigated. To achieve this, 3 types of blade shape were studied under the different air flow mass conditions and the numerical results were investigated in terms of humidification water, moisture concentration, and velocity distributions. Evaporated liquid mass was also compared under various test conditions to reveal the turbulent intensity in an intake port. It was observed that the optimized blade shape can improve the humidification water, moisture concentration, and velocity distributions of intake port inside. The evaporated liquid mass was also increased under the conditions with blade. Especially, low NOx emissions was observed with optimized blade condition.

  • The experiment using three-dimensional laser Dopperr velocimetery (LDV) measurements and the computation using the Reynolds stress model of the commercial code, FLUENT, were conducted to give a clear understanding on the structure of tip leakage flow in a forward-swept axial-flow fan operating at the maximum efficiency condition. The tip leakage vortex was generated near the position of the minimum wall static pressure, which was located at approximately 12% chord downstream from the leading edge of blade suction side, and developed along the centerline of the pressure trough within the blade passages. A reverse flow between the blade tip region and the casing, induced by tip leakage vortex, acted as a blockage on the through-flow. As a result, high momentum flux was observed below the tip leakage vortex. As the tip leakage vortex proceeded to the aft part of the blade passage, the strength of tip leakage vortex decreased due to the strong interaction with the through-flow and casing boundary layer, and the diffusion of tip leakage vortex caused by high turbulence. In comparison with LDV measurement data, the computed results predicted the complex viscous flow patterns inside the tip region, including the locus of tip leakage vortex center, in a reliable level.

  • A numerical analysis has been conducted in order to simulate the characteristics of complex flow through linear cascades of high performance turbine blade with/without tip clearance by using a pressure-correction based, generalized 3D incompressible Wavier-Stokes CFD code. The development and generation of horseshoe vortex, passage vortex, leakage vortex, tip vortex within tip clearance, etc. are clearly identified through the present simulation which uses the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model with wall function method and a second-order linear upwind scheme for convective terms. The present simulation results are consistent with the generally known tendency that occurs in the blade passage and tip clearance. A 3D model for secondary and leakage flows through turbine cascades with/without tip clearance is also suggested from the present simulation results, including the effects of tip clearance height.

  • In this paper, a computational study was conducted in order to investigate the rotor blade sweep effect on the aerodynamics of a small axial supersonic impulse turbine stage. For this purpose, three-dimensional unsteady RANS simulations have been performed with three different rotor blade sweep angles ($-15^{\circ}$, $0^{\circ}$, $+15^{\circ}$) and the results were compared with each other. Both NTG (No tip gap) and WTG (With tip gap) models were applied to examine the effect on tip leakage flow. As a result of the simulation, the positive sweep model ($+15^{\circ}$) showed better performance in relative flow angle, Mach number distribution, entropy rise, and tip leakage mass flow rate compared with no sweep model. With the blade static pressure distribution result, the positive sweep model showed that hub and tip loading was increased and midspan loading was reduced compared with no sweep model while the negative sweep model ($-15^{\circ}$) showed the opposite result. The positive sweep model also showed a good aerodynamic performance around the hub region compared with other models. Overall, the positive sweep angle enhanced the turbine efficiency.
