The one way fluid structure interaction analysis on advanced propeller blade for next generation turboprop aircraft. HS1 airfoil series are selected as a advanced propeller blade airfoil. Adkins method is used for aerodynamic design and performance analysis with respect to the design point. Adkins method is based on the vortex-blade element theory which design the propeller to satisfy the condition for minimum energy loss. propeller geometry is generated by varying chord length and pitch angle at design point. Blade sweep is designed based on the design mach number and target propulsion efficiency. The aerodynamic characteristics of the designed Advanced propeller were verified by CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamic) and showed the enhanced performance than the conventional propeller. The skin-foam sandwich structural type is adopted for blade. The high stiffness, strength carbon/epoxy composite material is used for the skin and PMI(Polymethacrylimide) is used for the foam. Aerodynamic load is calculated by computational fluid dynamics. Linear static stress analysis is performed by finite element analysis code MSC.NASTRAN in order to investigate the structural safety. The result of structural analysis showed that the design has sufficient structural safety. It was concluded that structural safety assessment should incorporate the off-design points.
An aerodynamic design tool was developed for small wind turbine blades based on the blade element momentum theory. The lift and drag coefficients of blades that are needed for aerodynamic blade design were obtained in real time from the Xfoil program developed at University of Illinois. While running, the developed tool automatically accesses the Xfoil program, runs it with proper aerodynamic and airfoil properties, and finally obtains lift and drag coefficients. The obtained aerodynamic coefficients are then used to find out optimal twist angles and chord lengths of the airfoils. The developed tool was used to design a wind turbine blade using low Reynolds number airfoils, SG6040 and SG6043 to have its maximum power coefficient at a specified tip speed ratio. The performance of the blade was verified by a commercial code well known for its prediction accuracies.
Objective : Clip artifacts limit the visualization of intracranial structures in CT scans from patients after aneurysmal clipping with cobalt alloy clips. This study is to analyze the parameters influencing the degree of clip artifacts. Methods : Postoperative CT scans of 60 patients with straight cobalt alloy-clipped aneurysms were analyzed for the maximal diameter of white artifacts and the angle and number of streak artifacts in axial images, and the maximal diameter of artifacts in three-dimensional (3-D) volume-rendered images. The correlation coefficient (CC) was determined between each clip artifact type and the clip blade length and clip orientation to the CT scan (angle a, lateral clip inclination in axial images; angle b, clip gradient to scan plane in lateral scout images). Results : Angle b correlated negatively with white artifacts (r=-0.589, p<0.001) and positively with the angle (r=0.636, p<0.001) and number (r=0.505, p<0.001) of streak artifacts. Artifacts in 3-D images correlated with clip blade length (r=0.454, p=0.004). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that angle b was the major parameter influencing white artifacts and the angle and number of streak artifacts in axial images (p<0.001), whereas clip blade length was a major factor in 3-D images (p=0.034). Conclusion : Use of a clip orientation perpendicular to the scan gantry angle decreased the amount of white artifacts and allowed better visualization of the clip site.

The direct simulation Monte Carlo Method is applied to investigate the two-dimensional flow fields of a turbomolecular pump(TMP) in both molecular and transition flow regions. The pumping characteristics of the TMP are investigated for a wide range of the Knudsen number. The maximum of compression ratio and of pumping speed strongly depend on the Knudsen number in transition region, while they weakly depend on the Knudsen number in free molecular flow region. The present numerical results show good agreement with the previously known experimental data. Finally. the results of the single blade row in both molecular and transition regions are used to predict the overall performance of a TMP, which has three kinds of blade with 24-rows.

Water turbines have been used in electricity generation for well over a century. Hydroelectricity now supplies 19% of world electricity. Many hydro power plants are operated with Pelton turbines, which is an impulse turbine. The main reasons for using impulse turbines are that they are very simple and relatively cheap. As the stream flow varies, water flow to the turbine can be easily controlled by changing the number of nozzles or by using adjustable nozzles. Scientific investigation and design of turbines saw rapid advancement during last century. Most of the research that had been done on turbines were focused on improving the performance with particular reference to turbine components such as shaft seals, speed increasers and bearings. There is not much information available on effects of blade friction on the performance of turbine. The main focus in this paper is to analyze the performance of Pelton turbine particularly with respect to their blade friction.
Variances in turbomachinery blades caused by manufacturing, operation or regeneration can result in modified structural behavior. In this work, the scatter of geometrical and material properties of a turbine blade and its influence on structure performance is discussed. In particular, the vibration characteristics and the lifetime of a turbine blade are evaluated. Geometrical variances of the surface of the blades are described using the principal component analysis. The scatter in material properties is considered by 16 varying material parameters. Maximum vibration amplitudes and the number of load cycles the turbine blade can withstand are analyzed by finite element simulations incorporating probabilistic principles. The probabilistic simulations demonstrate that both geometrical and material variances have a significant influence on the scatter of vibration amplitude and lifetime. Dependencies are quantified and correlations between varied input parameters and the structural performance of the blade are detected.

The rapid expansion or condensible gas such as moist air of steam gives rise to nonequilibrium condensation. As a result of irreversibility of condensation process in the supersonic cascade flow of low pressure steam turbine, the entropy of the flow is increased, and the efficiency of the turbine is decreased. In the present study, to investigate the flow of moist air in 2-dimensional cascade made as the configuration of the tip section of the last actual steam turbine moving blade, the static pressure at both sides of pressure and suction of blade are measured by static pressure taps and the distribution of Mach number on both surfaces of the blade are obtained by using the measured static pressure. Also, the flow field is visualized by a schlieren system. From the experimental results, the effects of the stagnation temperature and specific humidity on the flow properties in a 2-dimensional stationary cascade of a practical steam turbine blade are clearly identified.
In order to investigate the effects of various injection hole shapes on the film cooling of turbine blade, three test models having cylindrical and shaped holes were used. A three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code with standard k-$\epsilon$ model was used to compute the film cooling coefficient on the film cooled turbine blade. Over 330,000 grids were used to compute the flow over the blade. Mainstream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter was $7.1{\times}10^4$. The turbulence intensity kept at $5.0\%$ for all inlets. The effect of coolant blowing ratio was studied for various blowing ratios. For each blowing ratios, wall temperatures around the surface of test model were calculated. Temperature was visualized using cartesian cut-cell method to obtain traces of the injected secondary air on the test surface, so we could interpret the film effectiveness as temperature distributions.

The blade leading edge is modified to control the secondary flow generated in the turbine cascade with fence by intensifying the suction side branch of the horseshoe vortex. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved with a high Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence closure model for investigating the vortical flows in the turbine cascade. The computational results of total pressure loss coefficients in the wake region are first compared with experiments for validation. The structure and strength of the passage vortex near the suction surface are examined by testing various geometrical parameters of the turbine blade leading edge.
The heat (mass) transfer characteristics on the blade surface of a first-stage turbine rotor cascade for power generation has been investigated by employing the naphthalene sublimation technique. A four-axis profile measurement system is successfully developed for the measurements of the local heat (mass) transfer coefficient on the curved blade surface. The experiment is carried out at the free-stream Reynolds number and turbulence intensity of $2.09\times10^5$ and 1.2%. The results on the blade surfaces show that the local heat (mass) transfer on the suction surface is strongly influenced by the endwall vortices, but that on the pressure surface shows a nearly two-dimensional nature. The pressure surface has a more uniform distribution of heat load than the suction one.
