The flow fields around the HARTII rotor were numerically investigated using a viscous flow solver on adaptive unstructured meshes. An overset mesh and a deforming mesh technique were used to handle the blade motion including blade deflection, which was obtain from the HARTII experimental data. A solution-adaptive mesh refinement technique was also used to capture the rotor wake effectively. Comparison of the sectional normal force and pitching moment at 87% radial station between the two cases, with and without the blade deflection, showed that the blade loading is significantly affected by blade torsion. It was found that as the mesh was refined, the strength of tip vortex is better preserved, and the magnitude of high frequency blade loading, caused by blade-vortex interaction (BVI), is further magnified. It was also found that a proper time step size, which corresponds to the cell size, should be used to predict unsteady solutions accurately. In general, the numerical results in terms of the unsteady blade loading and the rotor wake show good agreement with the experimental data.

The aeroelastic analysis of rotor blades with trailing edge flaps, focused on reducing vibration while minimizing control effort, are investigated using large deflection-type beam theory in forward flight. The rotor blade aerodynamic forces are calculated using two-dimensional quasi-steady strip theory. For the analysis of forward flight, the nonlinear periodic blade steady response is obtained by integrating the full finite element equation in time through a coupled trim procedure with a vehicle trim. The objective function, which includes vibratory hub loads and active flap control inputs, is minimized by an optimal control process. Numerical simulations are performed for the steady-state forward flight of various advance ratios. Also, numerical results of the steady blade and flap deflections, and the vibratory hub loads are presented for various advance ratios and are compared with the previously published analysis results obtained from modal analysis based on a moderate deflection-type beam theory.

This paper describes a fabrication multiplexing sensor probe that employs a fiber Bragg grating(FBG) based on multiple measurements to determine the blade deflection of a wind power generator the reliability analysis of this probe is also presented. To diminish the temperature sensitivity of the FBG sensor, we form multiple CFRPs onto the upper and lower layers of the FBG and package it with an epoxy resin. As a result, the depth of the CFRP is 1mm, and the temperature sensitivity is $2.39pm/^{\circ}C$. We construct a sensor network utilizing the fabricated sensor with a blade beam model. As the number of pendulums is increased on the fore-end of the beam, the strain value is measured. The strain variation is calculated from the measurement of the load on the blade beam model by monitoring the strain of the FBG sensor. When the linear equation is applied, the strain error is 0.4% and when the finite difference method is used, the tip deflection error is 3.3%. The displacement error derived from the strain value of the FBG sensor is 4.39%. The calculated result between the measured value of the dead-end of the beam and the strain is less than 2.46% tip distortion error. Therefore, our proposed multiplexing sensor probe is a low-cost and high-reliability solution for a commercial wind power generator.

Seoul National University Flap (SNUF) blade is a small-scaled rotor blade incorporating a small trailing-edge flap control surface driven by piezoelectric actuators at higher harmonics for vibration attenuation. Initially, the blade was designed using two-dimensional cross-section analysis and a geometrically exact one-dimensional beam analysis, and material configuration was finalized. Flap deflection angle of ${\pm}45^{\circ}$ was established as the criterion for better vibration reduction performance based on an earlier simulation. Flap linkage mechanism design is carried out and static bench tests are conducted to verify the flap actuation mechanism performance. Different versions of test beds are developed and tested with the flap and chosen APA 200M piezoelectric actuators. Through significant improvements, a maximum deflection of ${\pm}3.7^{\circ}$ was achieved. High frequency experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance and transfer function of the test bed is determined experimentally. As the static tests are almost completed, rotor power required for testing the blade in whirl tower (centrifugal environment) is calculated and further preparations are under way.

The rotor blade is an important component of a tidal stream turbine and is affected by a large thrust force and load due to the high density of seawater. Therefore, the performance must be secured through the geometrical and structural design of the blade and the blade structural safety to which the composite material is applied. In this study, a 1 MW class large turbine blade was designed using the blade element momentum (BEM) theory. GFRP is a fiber-reinforced plastic used for turbine blade materials. A sandwich structure was applied with CFRP to lay-up the blade cross-section. In addition, to evaluate structural safety according to flow variations, static load analysis within the linear elasticity range was performed using the fluid-structure interactive (FSI) method. Structural safety was evaluated by analyzing tip deflection, strain, and failure index of the blade due to bending moment. As a result, Model-B was able to reduce blade tip deflection and weight. In addition, safety could be secured by indicating that the failure index, inverse reserve factor (IRF), was 1 or less in all load ranges excluding 3.0*Vr of Model-A. In the future, structural safety will be evaluated by applying various failure theories and redesigning the laminated pattern as well as the change of blade material.

There have been developed many structural and fluid rotorcraft analysis models in rotorcraft community, and also lots of investigations have been conducted to combine these two models. These investigations turn out to be good at predicting the airloads precisely, but they have not taken the blade nonlinear deflection into account. For this reason, the present paper adopts a sophisticated structural model which can describe three-dimensional nonlinear deflection of the blade. And it is combined with two types of aerodynamic model. First one is generalized Greenberg type of finite-time aerodynamic model, which is originally established for a fixed wing, but later modified to be suitable for coupled flap-lag-torsional aeroelastic analysis of the rotor blade. Second aerodynamic model is based on the unsteady source-doublet panel method coupled with a free wake model. The advantages of the present method are capabilities to consider thickness of the blade and more precise wake effects. Transient responses of the airloads and structural deflections in time domain are mainly analyzed in this paper.

In the present study, structure analysis has been performed to understand the deflection and stress distribution for a hybrid street-lamp having a vertical-axis wind turbine and a photovoltaic panel. Modal analysis is also evaluated to avoid resonance gerenerated by sychronism between a turbine and a lamppost. To analyze deflection, stress and frequency, general analysis code(ANSYS-Mechanical 13) is employed in the present work. Throughout structure analysis in the hybrid street-lamp, maximum stress is observed at the connecting position between a turbine blade and a blade supporter. Campbell diagram which is combined the natural frequency of turbine blades and blade passing frequency is presented to analyze a system resonance. It is found that the resonance of the system having a rotating turbine blade and a lamppost can avoid by the optimal selection of geometric parameters of a wind turbine.

Recently, the development of aerospace and automobile industries brought new technological challenges, related to the growing complexity of products and new geometry models. High speed machining using 5-Axis milling machine is widely used for 3D sculptured surface parts. 5-axis milling of turbine blade generates the vibration, deflection and twisting caused from thin and cantilever shape. So, the surface roughness and the waviness of workpiece are not good. In this paper, The effects of cutter orientation and lead/tilt angle in 5-Axis high speed ball end-milling of turbine blade were investigated to improve the geometric accuracy and surface integrity. The experiments were performed at lead/tilt angle $15^{\circ}$ of workpiece with four cutter directions such as horizontal outward, horizontal inward, vertical outward, and vertical inward. Workpiece deflection, surface roughness and machined surface were measured with various cutter orientations such as cutting direction, and lead/tilt angle. The results show that when 5-axis machining of turbine blade, the best cutting strategy is horizontal inward direction with tilt angle. The results show that when 5-axis machining of turbine blade, the best cutting strategy is horizontal inward direction with tilt angle.

In this work, a structural design on horizontal axis wind turbine blade using natural flax fiber composite is performed. The structural design results of flax/epoxy composite blade are compared with the design results of glass/epoxy composite blade. In order to evaluate the structural design of the composite blade, the structural analysis was performed by the finite element method. Through the structural analyses, it is confirmed that the designed blade using natural composite is acceptable for structural safety, blade tip deflection, structural stability, resonance possibility, and weight. Finally, structural test of manufactured blade was performed. Through the structural test, it is confirmed that the designed blade is acceptable.

In this study, the 750kW medium scale composite blade for the horizontal axis wind turbine system was designed and manufactured, and it was tested and evaluated by the specific structural test rig. In the test, it was found that local bucklings at the trailing edge of the blade and excessive deflections at the blade tip were happened. In order to solve these problems, the design of blade structure was modified. After improving the design, the abrupt change of deflection at the blade tip was reduced by smooth variation of the spar thickness and the local buckling was removed by extending the web length. The modified design was analyzed by the FEM, the safety and stability of the blade structure. And Fatigue life over 20 years was confirmed by using S-N linear damage method, Spera's method, etc.
