An unsteady numerical analysis has been carried out to study the strong impeller volute interaction of a centrifugal pump with six backward swept blades shrouded impeller. The numerical analysis is done by solving the three-dimensional Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes codes with standard k-${\varepsilon}$ two-equations turbulence model and wall regions are modeled with a scalable log-law wall function. The flow within the impeller passage is very smooth and following the curvature of the blade in stream-wise direction. However, the analysis shows that there is a recirculation zone near the leading edge even at design point. When the flow is discharged into volute casing circumferentially from the impeller outlet, the high velocity flow is severely distorted and formed a spiraling vortex flow within the volute casing. A spatial and temporal wake flow core development is captured dynamically and shows how the wake core diffuses. Near volute tongue region, the impeller/volute tongue strong interaction is observed based on the periodically fluctuating pressure at outlet. The results of existing analysis also proved that the pressure fluctuation periodically is due to the position of impeller blade relative to tongue.
Plasma display panel (PDP) is a type of flat panel display utilizing the light emission that is produced by gas discharge. Barrier Ribs of PDP separating each sub-pixel prevents optical and electrical crosstalk from adjacent sub-pixels. Mold for forming barrier ribs has been newly researched to overcome the disadvantages of conventional manufacturing process such as screen printing, sand-blasting and photosensitive glass methods. Mold for PDP barrier ribs have stripes of micro grooves transferring stripes of glass-material wall. In this paper. Stripes of grooves of which width 48 um, depth 124um, pitch 274um was acquired by machining the material of WC with dicing saw blade. Maximum roughness of the bottom and sidewall of the grooves was respectively 120 nm, 287 nm. Maximum tilt angle caused by difference between upper-most width and lower-most width was 2$^{\circ}$. Maximum Radius of curvature of bottom was 7.75 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. This results meets the specification for barrier ribs of 50 inch XGA PDP. Forming the glass paste will be followed by using mold in the near future.
The flow through a centrifugal compressor rotor was calculated using the quasi-3-dimensional and fully 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes solution methods. The calculated results, obtained during the development of the computer codes for both methods are discussed. In the inviscid quasi 3-dimensional analysis, stream function formulation was used for the blade to blade (B-B) plane calculations, and the streamline curvature method was used for the meridional (H-S) plane calculations. In the viscous 3-dimensional flow analysis, a control volume method based on a general rotating curvilinear coordinate system was used to solve the time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, and a standard k-.epsilon. model was used to obtain eddy viscosity. The quasi-3-dimensional analysis reasonably predicts the pressure distributions and requires much less computation time in the region where viscous effects are not strong; however, it fails to predict velocity field and loss mechanism through the impeller passage. The viscous 3-dimensional flow analysis shows reasonable pressure distributions and typical jet-wake flow field through the impeller passage. Secondary flow and total pressure distributions on cross-sectional planes explain the loss mechanisms through the impeller.
A computer program is developed for the prediction of the aerodynamic performance and the noise characteristics in the basic design step of axial flow fan. The flow field and the performance of fan are analyzed by using the streamline curvature computing scheme with total pressure loss and flow deviation models. Fan noise is assumed to be generated due to the pressure fluctuations induced by wake vortices of fan blades and to radiate via dipole distribution. The vortex-induced fluctuating pressure on blade surface is calculated by combining thin airfoil theory and the predicted flow field data. The predicted performances, sound pressure level and noise directivity patterns of fan by the present method are favorably compared with the test data of actual fan. Furthermore, the present method is shown to be very useful in optimizing design variables of fan with high efficiency and low noise level.
By matching a well established fast throughflow code, with standard loss correlations, and an efficient optimization algorithm, a new design system has been developed, which optimizes inlet and exit flow-field parameters for each blade row of a multistage axial flow turbine. The compressible steady state inviscid throughflow code based on streamline curvature method is suitable for fast and accurate flow calculation and performance prediction of a multistage axial flow turbine. A general purpose hybrid constrained optimization package, iSIGHT has been used, which includes the following modules: genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, modified method of feasible directions. The design system has been demonstrated using an example of a 5-stage low pressure steam turbine for 800MW thermal power plant previously designed by HANJUNG. The comparison of computed performance of initial and optimized design shows significant improvement in the turbine efficiency.
The objective of this work is to develop improved slip factor model and correction method to predict flow through impeller in forward-curved centrifugal fan by investigating the validity of various slip factor models. Both steady and unsteady three-dimensional CFD analyses were performed with a commercial code tn validate the slip factor model and the correction method. The results show that the improved slip factor model presented in this paper could provide more accurate predictions for forward-curved centrifugal impeller than the other slip factor models since the presented model takes into account the effect of blade curvature. The comparison with CFD results also shows that the improved slip factor model coupled with the present correction method provides accurate predictions for mass-averaged absolute circumferential velocity at the exit of impeller near and above the flow rate of peaktotal pressure coefficient.

The predicted aerodynamic performances, sound pressure level and noise directivity patterns of fan by the present computer program are favorably compared with the test data of actual fan. Flow fields of a transonic centrifugal compressor are calculated using the commercial CFD code, CFX-TASCflow. Due to the transonic inlet condition, interactions between the shock wave and boundary layers and between the shock wave and tip leakage vortices generate complex flow structures and extra losses. The calculated results show that strong secondary flows due to high curvature and high rotational speed of the impeller. And streamlines near suction surface show that strong radially upward flow develops after the shock between the leading edge locations of main blade and splitter.
