A GDD Model for Super Sweet Corn Grown under Black P. E. Film Mulch (흑색 P. E. Film 피복에서 초당옥수수의 생육기간을 표시하는 GDD모델 개발)

  • GDD models of corn were developed in bare soil, while sweet and super sweet corns are grown under black polyethylene (P. E.) film mulch in Korea. To develop a suitable GDD model under black P. E. film mulch, a super sweet com hybrid "Cambella-90" was planted from 1 April to 30 June in 2003 at the 10-day intervals under black P. E. film mulch and in bare soil. In bare soil the best GDD model was $GDD\;=\;{\sum}[H"+L')/2\;-\;10^{\circ}C]$, where H" was daily maximum temperature but is was substituted for $30^{\circ}C$ - (daily maximum temperature - $30^{\circ}C$) when higher than $30^{\circ}C$ and L' was daily minimum temperature, but it was substituted for $10^{\circ}C$ when lower than $10^{\circ}C$. The same GDD model could be adapted for com grown under black P. E. film mulch, but base temperature was substituted for $9^{\circ}C$. To determine planting date for the scheduled harvests, accumulated GDDs were calculated using 30-year average temperature data during the growing season. Under black P. E. film mulch planting dates were determined by subtracting GDD of the hybrid, $970^{\circ}C$, from accumulated GDD of scheduled harvest dates.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the light and thermal environment in model greenhouse using infrared absorption film as shading screen and to compare with the case of no shading and using general shading screen such as aluminum foil-backed film, black polyethylene film and thermal blanket. PPFD(photosynthetic photon flux density) of inside the model greenhouse under infrared absorption film was increased by 22% than under general shading screen on the average. And temperature of inside air under infrared absorption film was 2$^{\circ}C$ lower than under general shading screen on the average. So, it is expected that infrared absorption film is useful as shading screen.

  • This study was carried out to examine the effect of polyethylene film color and removing time of the mulching film in yacon (Polymnia sonchiiolia Poepp. & Endl.). The plant height on nonmulching was smaller about 10 cm or larger with 112cm than on other mulches ranged with $134{\sim}139$ cm at harvesting, and other characters examined were similar to that of plant height. The weight of tuberous root per plant was heavier on mulches ranged with $0.79{\sim}0.91$ kg than on non-mulching with 0.61 kg. Among the kind of mulches, plant height was the tallest with 139 cm in combination and declined in order of transparent, green and black polyethylene films. Yields among colored polyethylene films were the heaviest with 0.91 kg per plant in combination, 0.88 kg in black and 0.84 kg in green. In growth and yield full mulching untill harvesting was more effective than the other removed mulching treatments. It was effected on growth promotion at early growth stage, soil temperature and water preservation.

The Influence of Materials for Surface Mulching on Soil Temperature and Vegetative Growth of Apple Nursery Trees (지표면 멀칭재료가 지온과 사과나무 묘목의 수체생육에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of different polyethylene film (P.E. film) for mulching on the changes in soil temperature and the production of good feathered apple nursery trees. M.9 rootstocks with stem diameter of 9.1~11.0 mm were planted in plots covered with different P.E. film (i.e., transparent P.E. film, black P.E. film, and bare soil as control). Three weeks after planting, the rootstocks were veneer grafted with 'Sinano Sweet' apple cultivar. In the middle of June, BA was sprayed to nursery for inducing feathering during the growing season. The soil temperature of the control was higher than air temperature by about $0.7^{\circ}C$ from mid April to early October, and that of P.E. film mulching was about $1{\sim}5^{\circ}C$ higher than that of the control. The soil temperature under transparent P.E. film was about $2{\sim}3^{\circ}C$ higher than that under black P.E. film. The diurnal range of soil temperature under the black P. E. film was lowest among all treatments. The P.E. film mulching induced better tree growth and feathering than bare soil. Percentage of good feathering apple nursery of black P.E. film was highest among all treatments because the soil temperature unuder black P.E. film in the early growing season was higher than that of the control and the number of days when the maximum soil temperature was over $35^{\circ}C$ in the summer was lower than that under the transparent P.E. film.

Causal Factors of Black Stain during Cold Storage of Pear(Pyrus pyrifolia cv.Niitaka) and Its Postharvest Control (신고' 배 저온 저장중 발생하는 얼룩과 원인 및 방지)

  • Causal factors related to the skin disorder such as black stains during cold storage of 'Niitaka' pear fruit are of great importance to solve the postharvest disorder problems. The morphological and biochemical changes observe of pear skin affected by different harvest times and storage environments. Occurrence rate of black stain in 'Niitaka' pear fruit was the highest in newspaper bagging with 75% among various bagging materials at harvest time because of the high relative humidity within the double layer paper bags. During cold storage, the rate was 54~100% in 30 $\mu\textrm{m}$ polyethylene (PE) film packaging. As the harvest time was postponed, the rate increasedduring cold stoinge. The into was 1.5 to 2.4 times higher in pears harvested in late September than in those harvested in early and mid October. There was no significant difference in occurrence of black stain fruit between the 30 and 50 $\mu\textrm{m}$ PE film bags. The causal fungus of the black stain pear was assumed as Gloeodes pomigena (Schweintz, 1920). The treatment of 0.1~0.5 ppm ozone gas prevented the occurrence of the pear fruit black stain until 180 days after cold storage. The ozone treatment on the affected fruit was also effective in preventing the progress of the black stain.

  • Quality of fresh-cut tomato slices was compared during cold storage under various modified atmosphere packaging conditions. Chilling injury of slices in containers sealed with Film A was higher than with Film B; these films had oxygen transmission rates of 87.4 and 60.0 ml $h^{-1}\;m^{-2}\;atm^{-1}$ at $5^{\circ}C\;and\;99\%$ RH, respectively. While slices in containers with an initial atmospheric composition of air, $4\%\;CO_2+1\;or\;20\%\;O_2,\;8\%\;CO_2+1\;or\;20\%\;O_2,\;or\;12\%\;CO_2+20\%\;O_2$ showed fungal growth, slices in containers with $12\%\;CO_2+1\%\;O_2$ did not. Low ethylene in containers enhanced chilling injury. Modified atmosphere packaging provided good quality tomato slices with a shelf-life of 2 weeks or more at $5^{\circ}C$. Experiments were conducted to compare changes in quality of slices of red tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. 'Sunbeam') fruit from plants grown using black polyethylene or hairy vetch mulches under various foliar disease management systems including: no fungicide applications (NF), a disease forecasting model (Tom-Cast), and weekly fungicide applications (WF), during storage at $5^{\circ}C$ under a modified atmosphere. Slices were analyzed for firmness, soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), pH, electrolyte leakage, fungi, yeasts, and chilling injury. With both NF and Tom-Cast fungicide treatments, slices from tomato fruit grown with hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) mulch were firmer than those from tomato fruit grown with black polyethylene mulch after 12 days storage. Ethylene production of slices from fruit grown using hairy vetch mulch under Tom-Cast was about 1.5- and 5-fold higher than that of slices from WF and NF fungicide treatments after 12 days, respectively. The percentage of water-soaked areas (chilling injury) for slices from tomato fruit grown using black polyethylene mulch under NF was over 7-fold that of slices from tomato fruit grown using hairy vetch under Tom-Cast. When stored at $20^{\circ}C$, slices from light-red tomato fruit grown with black polyethylene or hairy vetch mulches both showed a rapid increase in electrolyte leakage beginning 6 hours after slicing. However, slices from tomato fruit grown using the hairy vetch mulch tended to have lower electrolyte leakage than those grown with black polyethylene mulch. These results suggest that tomato fruit from plants grown using hairy vetch mulch may be more suitable for fresh-cut slices than those grown using black polyethylene mulch. Also, use of the disease forecasting model Tom-Cast, which can result in lower fungicide application than is currently used commercially, resulted in high quality fruit for fresh-cut processing. Experiments were conducted to determine if ethylene influences chilling injury, as measured by percentage of slices exhibiting water-soaked areas in fresh-cut tomato slices of 'Mountain Pride' and 'Sunbeam' tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Ethylene concentration in containers without ventilation significantly increased during storage at $5^{\circ}C$, whereas little or no accumulation of ethylene occurred in containers with one or six perforations. Chilling injury was greatest for slices in containers with six perforations, compared to slices in containers with one perforation, and was over 13-fold greater than that of slices in control containers with no perforations. An experiment was also performed to investigate the effectiveness of including an ethylene absorbent pad in containers on subsequent ethylene accumulation and chilling injury. While ethylene in the no-pad controls increased continually during storage of both 'Mountain Pride' and 'Sunbeam' tomatoes at $5^{\circ}C$ under modified atmosphere conditions, no increase in accumulation of ethylene was observed in containers containing ethylene absorbent pads throughout storage. The ethylene absorbent pad treatment resulted in a significantly higher percentage of chilling injury compared with the no-pad control. In studies aimed at inhibiting ethylene production using AVG during storage of slices, the concentration of ethylene in control containers (no AVG) remained at elevated levels throughout storage, compared to containers with slices treated with AVG. Chilling injury in slices treated with AVG was 5-fold greater than that of controls. Further, we tested the effect of ethylene pretreatment of slices on subsequent slice shelf-life and quality. In slices treated with ethylene (0, 0.1, 1, or $10\;{mu}L\;L^{-1}$) immediately after slicing, ethylene production in non-treated controls was greater than that of all other ethylene pre-treatments. However, pretreatment of slices 3 days after slicing resulted in a different pattern of ethylene production during storage. Ihe rate of ethylene production by slices treated with 1 L $L^{-1}$ ethylene 3 days after slicing was greater during storage than any of the other ethylene treatments. With slices pre-treated with ethylene, both immediately and 3 days after slicing, the rate of ethylene production tended to show an negative correlation with chilling injury. Storage of Black Rice using Flexible Packaging Materials (유연성 플라스틱 포장재를 이용한 흑미의 저장)

  • The quality change of black rice during storage at $20^{\circ}C$ was measured to determine a packaging material for black rice storage, using polyethylene film (PE), polypropylene film (PP) and laminated film with PE and PP (PE/PP). Water activity of black rice was 0.642 at initial time and changed little in 8 months during storage at $20^{\circ}C$. Acidity of black rice was 25 mg KOH at initial time and was the lowest, 33.16 mg KOH, within PE/PP of 0.10 mm in thickness in 8 months during storage at $20^{\circ}C$. L, a and b values, hunter color value of black rice were not changed significantly in all packaging materials during 8 month storage. Hardness of the black rice was increased a little, but changed the smallest in PF/PP and the largest in PE with 0.05mm in thickness in 8 months. During storage, hexanal content was increased the smallest in PE/PP and the largest in 0.05 mm PE. Among fatty acid of black rice, linoleic acid was changed the smallest in PE/PP and the largest in 0.05 mm PE. In conclusion, PE/PP was better for the storage of black rice than PE and PP.

  • Ohmic joule heating electrodes were developed for the electrical heater of the floor of a room. A composite slurry of super pure black and polyvinylidene fluoride with/without the additives of multi-walled carbon nanotube or kindney stone powder was coated as a thin film on the polyethylene terephthalate film. The performances of heating electrodes were evaluated checking specific conductivity, adhesion strength and hardness. The addition of kindney stone powder increases specific resistance and hardness in a small extent. However, the addition of carbon nanotube increases specific conductivity and hardness. The properties of various compositions of ohmic joule heating electrodes were evaluated.

Effect of Recycled Paper Mulch on Yield of Fall-grown Potato

  • High temperature during sprout emergence period of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a major limitation to the yield of fall-grown potato in Korea. To explore the possibility of improving the yield of fall-grown potato through recycled paper mulching, the changes of soil environment and the growth and yield of potato cv. Daeji as affected by three mulching treatments of non-mulched control, recycled paper mulching (RPM), and black polyethylene film-mulching (BPFM) were examined over two fall seasons at Suwon, Korea. The mulching materials were a recycled mulch paper with 110 g/$m^2$ and a thickness of 0.1 mm, which was manufactured from old corrugated containers for this experiment and a commercial black polyethylene film with a thickness of 0.01mm. On an average throughout the growing period, the soil temperature with RPM at the 5-cm depth was lower by 0.4-1.1$^{\circ}C$ than that of the control. The maximum temperature during daytime in RPM was lowered by approximately 1 to 5$^{\circ}C$ according to the weather condition during emergence period, the difference being great on a fine day. The soil temperature with BPFM was much higher than the control. The effect of the mulching treatments diminished as the canopy became developed. The mulching treatments were more advantageous than the control in the conservation of soil water. Moreover, RPM and BPFM efficiently suppressed the occurrence of weeds until the potato harvest. RPM improved the emergence significantly due to lower soil temperature, whereas BPFM showed much poorer emergence than the control. Growth after emergence and yield were significantly higher in RPM than in the control and BPFM. It was concluded that the significantly improved yield in RPM compared to that in the control was mainly due to the improvement of the sprout emergence and tuber growth accompanied by lower soil temperature and better conservation of soil water.
