In this study, the physical properties of coal-based(bituminous, anthracite·bituminous) activated carbon were compared with those of four different commercial activated carbon used for water treatment. In case of bituminous coal and blend coal, the results of SEM analysis indicated that more pore was extended and shaped in activation process than carbonization process. The results of BET analysis indicated that specific surface area of P Co. activated carbon was larger than the others, and C Co. activated carbon, S Co. activated carbon and anthracite + bituminous was similar. Therefore, adsorption capacities and breakthrough time of anthracite + bituminous regarded similar to C Co. activated carbon.
The objects of this study were to investigate emissions of air pollutant the particles as well as the combustibility of the low grade domestic anthracite coal and imported high-calorific bituminous coal in the fluidized bed coal combustor. The production of air pollution from anthracite-bituminous coal blend combustion in a fluidized bed coal combustor was evaluated. The effects of air velocity and anthracite fraction on the reaching time of steady state condition was also evaluated. We used coal samples the domestic low grade anthracite coal with heating value of 2,010 kcal/kg and the imported high grade bituminous coal with heating value of 6,520 kcal/kg. The experimental results are presented as follows. The time of reaching to steady state was affected by the temperature variation. The steady state time was about 120 minute at 0.3 m/s which was the fastest. It has been found that $O_2$ and $CO_2$ concentration were reached steady state at about 100 minute. As the height of fluidized bed becomes higher, the concentration s of $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ mainly increased. The concentration of freeboard was the highest and emission concentration was diminished. Also, as anthracite fraction increased, the emission of $SO_x$ concentration was increased. But, it has been found that the variation of $NO_x$ concentration with anthracite fraction was negligible and the difference of emission concentration according to air flow rates was negligible, too. It has been found that $O_2$ concentration decreased and $CO_2$ concentration increased as the height of fluidized bed increased. As anthracite fraction increased, the mass of elutriation particles increased, and $CO_2$ concentration decreased. Also, as air velocity increased, $O_2$ concentration decreased and $CO_2$ concentration increased. Regardless-of anthracite fraction and flow rate, the combustible weight percentage in elutriation particles were high in the case of fine particles.
Pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of fly ash on growth responses and on accumulation of the heavy metals in soil. Two kinds of fly ash, anthracite and bituminous coal, were treated with different levels of 0, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.2 kg/pot(20L). Tobacco growth was better by application of fly ash than that by the control. However, the early stage of growth by application of bituminous coal, 1.2 kg/pot, was decreased due to the boron toxicity occurred by fly ash. Generally, tobacco yield was significantly increased with applying fly ash, showing the highest yield at 1.2 kg/pot for anthracite and at 0.8 kg/pot for bituminous coal. The content of total nitrogen in leaves was higher with fly ash than that of the control, while the content of calcium in leaves was low, Contents of heavy metal and the other minerals were not significantly different between the control and the treatment of fly ash. Soil pH after experiment was linearly increased with application level of fly ash, indicating that the application of bituminous coal was more effective than that of anthracite. Contents of available phosphate, exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$+ and $Mg^{2+}$ in soil were increased by application of fly ash, especially with bituminous coal. Contents of Cu, Cr, and Ni were increased with application level of bituminous coati even if the contents were still lower than critical levels for farming land. The other heavy metals were similar between the control and the application of fly ash.
In order to provide fundamental information for developing reaction model in the practical blended coal power plants, effects of particle size and blending ratio on combustion characteristics and thermal reaction in co-firing with bituminous and sub-bituminous coals were experimentally investigated using a TGA and a laboratory-scale burner. Characteristic parameters including ignition, burnout temperature and activation energy were determined from TG and DTG combustion profiles. Distributions of flame length and mean particle temperature were investigated from the visualization of flames in slit-burner system. As coal particle size decreased and volatile matter content increased, characteristic temperatures and activation energy decreased. The ignition/burnout characteristics and activation energy are linearly influenced by a variation in particle size and blending ratio. These results indicated that the control of the coal blending ratio can improve the combustion efficiency for sub-bituminous coals and the ignition characteristics for bituminous coals.

Two species of fish and five species of marine invertebrate showed different tolerances to the toxicity of composite slag and bituminaus coal. Especially, Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus and young Haliotis discus hannai displayed marked differences in tolerance from. H. pulcherrimus and young H. discus hannai showed lethal effects at higher concentrations than those concentrations of the composite slag in the 1.0 and $0.4\%$ range, respectively. H. pulcherrimus showed no lethal effects at a lower concentration of $1.0\%$ composite slag and some differences in the rate of oxygen consumption with this concentration of composite slag. The lethal effects of bituminous coal on marine and fisheries organisms, even with higher concentrations, were not observed. At a higher concentration than that of 500 mg/L (ppm) of bituminous coal, decrease effects appeared in the rate of oxygen consumption of the experimental organisms. Taking into consideration that the experimental concentration of composite slag and bituminous coal were impracticable in the ocean, the results of this experiment suggest that composite slag and bituminous coal pose no real threat to marine or fisheries organisms.
This study is to determined the activation energy from TGA experimental data for the bituminous and anthracite coals of three kinds which are being used in the domestic coal-fired power plants. TGA experimental data indicate that the weight loss temperature of bituminous coal is 200$^{\circ}C$ higher than that of anthracite coal. Activation energy of bituminous coal is in the range of 14∼20 Kcal/mole compared with 37∼55 Kcal/mole of anthracite coal. A reduction of particle size of coals results in the decrease of activation energy and activation energy has a good correlation with the weight loss percent of coal in the TGA experiment. Addition of CaCO$_3$ on anthracite coal caused to decrease the activation energy of 1∼23 Kcal/mole while activation energy of bituminous coal do not change significantly.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of fly ash on the yield and quality and to determine the optimum application amount of fly ash for tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum L). Two kinds of fly ash, anthracite and bituminous coal, were treated with different levels of 0, 20, 40, 60 MT/ha. Dry weights of tobacco at middle and topping growth stage were increased with application of fly ash, showing the highest dry weight at 40 MT/ha in both kinds of fly ash. It was showed that the bituminous coal had a little more effective for yield than that of anthracite. Comparing with the control, yields of tobacco applied with fly ash were significantly increased about 17.7% and 17.1% by the application of bituminous coal and anthracite, respectively. Quality of flue-cured leaves was better by application of fly ash than that of the control. The quality index was given the highest at 40 MT/ha for bituminous coal increasing by 24.6% and at 60 MT/ha fur anthracite increasing by 13.4% compared with the control. The economical efficiency considered of the yield and quality of tobacco was the highest at 40 MT/ha of bituminous. Soil pH, contents of available P2O5, organic matter, exchangeable Ca2+ and Mg2+ of soil during the growing season were increased by application of fly ash, showing more effectiveness in bituminous than that in anthracite. By the application of fly ash, the nutrients availability and the acidity of soil were reformed and they caused significantly the increase of growths yield, and quality of tobacco. By the application of lime reforming soil acidity, growth response, yields and quality of tobacco were not increased compared to the control, although the effect of reforming soil pH was remarkable.

In Korean coal power plants, rising coal prices have recently led to the rapid utilization of low lank coals such as sub-bituminous coal with low calorific values and low ash fusion temperatures. Using these coals beyond the design range has resulted in important issues including slagging and fouling, which cause negative effects in boiler performances and unstable operations. The purpose of this study is to observe slagging and fouling characteristics resulted from burning various ranks of pulverized coals. We have tested 3 different coals: FLAME(bituminous), KCH(sub-bituminous) and MOOLARBEN(bituminous)coals in the pilot system $50kW_{th}$ scale. A stainless steel tube with preheated air inside was installed in the downstream in order to simulate water wall. Collected ash on the probe and the slag inside the furnace near burner were analyzed by SEM (scanning electron microscopy) to verify the formation degree, surface features and color changes of the pasty ash particles. Induced coupled plasma and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were also performed to figure out the chemical characteristics of collected samples. As a result, KCH was observed that more slag was developed inside the walls of the furnace and on the probe than the other two kinds of coals, as shown in the calculate slagging and fouling indices as well.
Spontaneous ignition tests of five different coals with non-iso-thermal and iso-thermal test method based on the standard test procedure of NF T20-036 were carried. These five coals included the 2 low rank coals and 3 bituminous coals. Test results showed that the ignition temperatures of all coals at the iso-thermal conditions were higher than that of non-isothermal condition, and those of low rank SM and BR coal in both nonisothermal and isothermal conditions were lower than bituminous AN and CN coals. The chemical species of coals such as oxygen and hematite also plays an important role in enhancing the ignition rate that the ignition temperature of SM coal was lowered. The heat accumulation tendency of five coals inside outdoor stack pile was monitored with emphasis on the change in the temperature of the coal depth in stack pile. In case of low rank BR coal, its temperature inside coal stack pile due to the rate of high heat accumulation and oxidation was $59^{\circ}C$ compared to $51^{\circ}C$ for other SW bituminous coal. And the heat accumulation rate inside coal stack piles was increased with increased the Cp value which it was defined as the specific heat of coal at constant pressure, whereas other factors such as thermal diffusivity and conductivity of coal relatively had less effect on heat accumulation.
Mixed-firing of a bituminous and an anthracite coal carried out in a batch fluidized bed combustor(0.109 m-I.D., 0.9 m-height). Effect of particle size an mixing fraction of anthracite and bituminous coal combustion characteristics were studied. The temperature profiles and pressure fluctuation properties were measured to interpret the combustion characteristics in a batch fluidized bed combustor. The used domestic anthracite coal has heating value of 2010 kcal/kg and the imported high-calorific bituminous coal has heating value of 6520 kcal/kg. The combustion characteristics in a batch fluidized bed combustor could be interpreted by using pressure fluctuation properties and temperature increasing rates. It was found that the optimum anthracite mixing percentage could be predicted analyzing the combustion rate and fluidization characteristics, The optimum mixing fraction was about 30 %. The different burning region of fluidized bed combustor was measured by temperature increasing rates.
