  • The two way subscriber transmission systems have tendency to spread its carrier frequency bandwidth or information bit rate and average bit error rate according to popularization of high speed information through the digital communication system, transmission medium and the Internet. This fact is an important incentive to realize new systems. These two way subscriber transmission systems usually use same cable or same carrier frequency bandwidth for up stream channel and down stream channel. In the systems, the disturbances of noise, crosstalk or fading affect the characteristics. Specifically, these disturbances cause the decrease of information bit rate and degradation of transmission quality. This paper proposes the improved method of their degradations using the particular feature of two way subscriber transmission systems and it makes clear proposed method is effective by theoretically and some numerical examples.

  • Recent studies on the Constant Bit Rate and Variable Bit Rate transmissions have mainly focused on the frame by frame encoder rate control based on the quantization parameter. With the existing approaches it is difficult to guarantee a consistent video quality. Also, the rate control overhead is too high for the real-time video sources. In this paper, a channel rate allocation scheme based on the control period is proposed to transmit a real-time video, in which the control period is defined by a pre-specified number of frames or group of pictures. At each control period, video traffic information is collected to determine the channel rate at the next control period. The channel rate is allocated to satisfy various channel rate constraints such that the buffer occupancy at the decoder is maintained at a target level. If the allocated channel rate approaches the level at which the negotiated traffic descriptions may be violated, the encoder rate is decreased through adjusting quantization parameters in the MPEG encoder. In the experimental results, the video quality and the overflow and underflow probabilities at the buffer are compared at different control periods. Experiments show that the video quality and the utilization of network bandwidth resources can be optimized through the suitable selection of the control period.

  • This paper presents a selective duality control system to control relative picture quality among the video programs in terms of Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) . The selective quality control system allows variable bit rate (VBR) for each video program to maintain the pre-determitted relative picture Quality among aggregated video programs while keeping a constant bit rate for alt programs to be transmitted over a single constant bit rate (CBR) channel. Thus is achieved by simultaneous controlling the video encoders to generate VBR video streams at the central controller. furthermore, we also suggest a buffer regulation method based on the analysis of the constraints Imposed by sender/receiver buffer sizes and the total transmission rate. Through various simulation results, it is found that the proposed quality control system guarantees that the video buffers neither overflow nor underflow and the quality control errors do not exceed 0.1 dB.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive rate control in frame-level for real-time H.264/AVC. For given QP, bits according to video characteristics, and current frame is close correlation between the adjacent frames. Using the statistical characteristic, we obtain change of occurrence bit about QP to apply the bit amount by QP from the video characteristic and applied in the estimated bit amount of the current frame. In addition, we use weight with QP and occurrence bit amount that is statistical information of encoded previous frames. Simulation results show that the proposed rate control scheme achieves time saving of more than 99% over JM 12.1 rate control algorithm. Nevertheless, PSNR and bit rate were almost same as the performances of JM.

  • In this paper, we present a model-based video bit rate estimation scheme for reducing the bit rate while maintaining a given target quality in many video streaming services limited by network bandwidth, such as IPTV services. Each item of video content can be stored on a video streaming server and delivered with the estimated bit rate using the proposed scheme, which consists of the following two steps: 1) In the first step, the complexity of each intra-frame in a given item of video content is computed as a frame feature to extract a group of candidate frames with a lot of bits. 2) In the second step, the bit rate of the video content is determined by applying statistical analysis and hypothesis testing to that group. The experimental results show that our scheme can reduce the bit rate by up to 78% with negligible degradation of subjective quality, especially with the low-complexity videos commonly used in IPTV services.

  • In this paper, we propose the rate control scheme reducing frame skipping at low bit-rate. As the method considering lossy parts in the compressing process at the existing scheme, the proposed scheme is improved by subtracting the converted bits from the target bit-rate of the current frame. The converted bits are the value resulted from multiplying the ratio of the current frame MAD to the previous frame MAD by the compressed bits changed from the remaining values after compressing the previous frame.

  • In the distributed video coding (DVC) system, the difference between the side information and the original Wyner-Ziv frame is corrected using channel codes and the additional parity bits are requested through feedback channel if the error is not corrected. The efficient bit rate control is important to use the DVC system in the band-limited channel, such as mobile communication environments. In this paper, the constant bit rate control method in the encoder of the DVC system is proposed. The coding performance as well as the bit rate is efficiently controlled by the proposed method.

  • Since the H.264 encoding adopts both forward prediction and hi-direction prediction modes and exploits Variable Length Coding(VLC), the amount of data generated from video encoder varies as Flaying time goes by. The fixed bit rate encoding system which has limited transmission channel capacity uses a buffer to control output bitstream It's necessary to control the bitstream to maintain within manageable range so as to protect buffer from overflow or underflow. With existing bit amount control algorithms, the $\lambda_{MODE}$ which is relationship between distortion value and quantization parameter often excesses normal value to end up with video error. This paper proposes an algorithm to protect buffer from overflow or underflow by introducing a new quantization parameter against distortion value of H.264 video data. The test results of 6 exemplary data show that the proposed algorithm has the same PSNR as and up to 8% reduced bit rate against existing algorithms.

  • In wireless ad-hoc network, knowing the available bandwidth of the time varying channel is imperative for live video streaming applications. This is because the available bandwidth is varying all the time and strictly limited against the large data size of video streaming. Additionally, adapting the encoding rate to the suitable bit-rate for the network, where an overlarge encoding rate induces congestion loss and playback delay, decreases the loss and delay. While some effective rate controlling methods have been proposed and simulated well like VTP (Video Transport Protocol) [1], implementing to cooperate with the encoder and tuning the parameters are still challenging works. In this paper, we show our result of the implementation experiment of VTP based encoding rate controlling method and then introduce some techniques of our parameter tuning for a video streaming application over wireless environment.
