Current low-altitude radar system often fails to detect small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) because of their small radar cross section (RCS) compared with larger targets. As a potential alternative, a passive bistatic radar system has been considered. We study an optimal deployment problem for the passive bistatic radar system. We model this problem as a covering problem, and develop an integer programming model. The objective of the model is to maximize coverage of a passive bistatic radar system. Our model takes into account factors specific to a bistatic radar system, including bistatic RCS and transmitter-receiver pair coverage. Considering bistatic RCS instead of constant RCS is important because the slight difference of RCS value for small UAVs could significantly influence the detection probability. The paired radar coverage is defined by using the concept of gradual coverage and cooperative coverage to represent a realistic environment.

This paper introduces a bistatic ISAR imaging technique. In bistatic geometry, the transmitter and receiver are placed in different locations. The monostatic ISAR is inadequate not only for obtaining images on targets approaching along the radar's line of sight, but also for stealth targets. In this paper, geometry, signal modeling as well as bistatic Doppler for bistatic ISAR are introduced to address these problems. Simulations results show bistatic ISAR images as well as monostatic ISAR images against target's moving scenarios, and analyze their differences for each scenario.

In this paper, we have identified the system instability factors in a bistatic radar system using pulse chasing and considered their effects on the bistatic receiver's MTI(Moving Target Indication) improvement performance. The pulse chasing is a method to efficiently scan a restricted search area within the limited transmitter power and time in a bistatic radar and to track a series of transmitted pulses using the receiver beam which has ideally matched to the pulse propagation rate. In this paper, we have discussed the interrelationship between the pulse chasing and time and frequency/phase synchronization and described the effects of the identified system instability factors on two kinds of MTI filter configuration, single delay-line and double delay-line, in the bistatic radar. And also, we have confirmed that the overall system improvement is restricted by a lower improvement factor among identified them, and discussed the allowable tolerance of the time and frequency/phase synchronization in the bistatic system.

In this paper, we propose a method to generate SAR(synthetic aperture radar) images for bistatic radar. The bistatic SAR can overcome several limitations of monostatic SAR, because the former can be applied to a variety of scenarios, compared to the latter. However, no study has been conducted on bistatic SAR imaging so far. In this paper, we propose a method to generate bistatic SAR images using the monostatic equivalent model and conventional monostatic SAR imaging algorithms. Simulations using airborne SAR in the bistatic geometry validated the efficacy of the proposed method.

Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar(ISAR) image is 2-dimensional radar cross section distributions of a target. For target approaching along radar's line of sight(LOS), the bistatic ISAR can compensate for the weakness of the monostatic ISAR which can not obtain the vertical resolution of the image. However, bistatic ISAR have longer processing times and variability in scattering mechanisms than monostatic ISAR, so target identification using only bistatic ISAR images can be inefficient. Therefore, this paper analyzes target identification performance using monostatic and bistatic ISAR images of targets approaching along radar's LOS and proposes a method of target identification through fusion of two radars. Simulation results demonstrate that identification performance through fusion is more efficient than identification performance using only monostatic, bistatic ISAR images.

In this paper, we study the estimation of angle, range and polarization parameters of a bistatic polarization sensitive frequency diverse array multiple-input multiple-output (PSFDA-MIMO) radar system. The application of polarization sensitive array in receiver is explored. A signal model of bistatic PSFDA-MIMO radar system is established. In order to utilize the multi-dimensional structure of array signals, the matched filtering radar data can be represented by a third-order tensor model. A joint estimation of the direction-of-departure (DOD), direction-of-arrival (DOA), range and polarization parameters based on parallel factor (PARAFAC) algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm does not need to search spectral peaks and singular value decomposition, and can obtain automatic pairing estimation. The method was compared with the existing methods, and the results show that the performance of the method is better. Therefore, the accuracy of the parameter estimation is further improved.

Imaging in bistatic radar has been known a more difficult task than that in monostatic radar. It is because the behavior of the bistatic range and the bistatic Doppler due to the motion of a transmitter and a receiver is so random that the compensation procedure, which we call an imaging algorithm, is quite complicated. This paper presents a bistatic radar imaging algorithm that can be used in some specific bistatic radar geometry. We show this geometry can present rectangular-like resolution cell on isorange-isoDoppler contours map. We also present the associated resolution and simulation results.

Bistatric radar can perform detection and identification for stealth targets that are rarely detected by the conventional monostatic radar. However, high resolution range profile(HRRP) generated from the received signal in the bistatic radar cannot show exact range information of the target because the bistatic geometry lead to the distortions of the bistatic HRRP. In addition, electromagnetic scattering mechanisms of the target are varied depending on the bistatic geometry. Thus, efficient database construction is a crucial factor to achieve successful classification capability in bistatic target identification. In this paper, a database construction method based on realistic flight scenarios of a target, which provides a reliable identification performance for the monostatic radar, is applied to bistatic target identification. Then, the capability and efficiency of the method is analyzed. Simulation results show that reliable identification performance can be achieved using the database construction based on the flight scenarios when the target is a considerable distance away from the bistatic radar.

This paper proposes a M & S Tool for simulating the detection performance in the bistatic radar system. After examing the interrelationship among the bistatic radar parameters, $P_d$(probability of detection), $P_{fa}$(probability of false alarm) and SNR of the received signal, we analyze the range of the bistatic radar range product and range sum. We derive the number of integration of the received pulses that satisfies the required detection performance of the bistatic radar system, along with the analysis of the performance degradation in the jammer scenario. Finally, the analyzed results are implemented in the M & S Tool which consists of 4 modules.

In this paper, we analyzed the performance of radar target classification using the monostatic and bistatic radar cross section(RCS) for four different wire targets. Short time Fourier transform(STFT) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) were used for feature extraction from the monostatic RCS and the bistatic RCS of each target, and a multi-layered perceptron(MLP) neural network was used as a classifier. Results show that CWT yields better performance than STFT for both the monostatic RCS and the bistatic RCS. And, when STFT was used, the performance of the bistatic RCS was slightly better than that of the monostatic RCS. However, when CWT was used, the performance of the monostatic RCS was slightly better than that of the bistatic RCS. Resultingly, it is proven that bistatic RCS is a good cadndidate for application to radar target classification in combination with a monostatic RCS.
