  • A simple resistance deviation-to-time period converter is proposed for interfacing resistive half-bridge sensors. It consists of two 2nd generation current conveyors(CCIIs). The proposed converter has simpler circuit configuration than the conventional converters using operational amplifiers or operational transconductance amplifiers(OTAs). The proposed converter was simulated using CCII implemented with AD844 IC chips. The simulation results show that the converter has a conversion sensitivity of $0.01934ms/{\Omega}$ over a range of $100-500{\Omega}$ resistance deviations and a linearity error less than ${\pm}0.002%$.

  • Bistable chiral splay nematic liquid crystal display (BCSN LCD) is a memory type liquid crystal display using splay and $-\pi$ twist states as two stable states. When the cell thickness to pitch (d/p) ratio is 0.25, splay and $-\pi$ twist states have permanent memory time. However, when the transition from $-\pi$ twist state to splay state is caused by a fringe field, pixel regions show that the splay state is not perfect, but rather includes a contribution from the $-\pi$ twist state. In this paper, we propose a reflective BCSN LCD using $-\pi$ twist state in which the two stable states do not coexist. The fabricated reflective BCSN LC cell shows a high contrast ratio of over 30:1 and response times of 950 ms and 450 ms in vertical and fringe field switching, respectively. The proposed cell also shows wide viewing angle characteristics of $180^{\circ}$ in left- and right directions.

  • We developed a new cholesteric material for bistable LCDs. The material consists of dispersion of sub-micron ferroelectric particles in cholesteric host. We found that the doping of the cholesteric with ferroelectric particles in small concentration (< 1% by weight) strongly improved basic characteristics of the transition between poly-domain planar texture and focal conic texture. Decrease of the driving voltage, increase of the reflection contrast and the steepness of the transition is associated with giant steady dipole and dielectric constant of the ferroelectric particles.

  • Photonic crystal (PC) has special interests for their promising applications in three-dimensional photon control and integrated devices. In a nonlinear photonic crystal (NPC), optical intensity in a defect layer is greatly increased due to the location function of NPC and nonlinearity. The nonliearity of the defect layer is very much enhanced because the group velocity is reduced and the interaction time between light and nonlinear medium in the defect layer is enlarged. (omitted)

  • Moving a droplet by electrowetting is the basis of our novel displays. This enables mechanical bistable and high reflective monochrome as well as color systems. Since no high temperature process is required, plastic substrates can be used. Our prototypes show promising performance in terms of a wide temperature range, contrast ratio and color.

  • A flexible reflective cholesteric liquid crystal display (ChLCD) is fabricated on plastic substrates by using the pixel isolation method. The polymer walls between pixels and the polymer layers in the pixels are formed by two-step UV irradiation. Electro-optical response of the ChLCD with polymer wall and layer is studied and compared with conventional bistable ChLCD cells.

  • A free boundary problem is derived from a singular limit system of a reaction diffusion equation whose reaction terms are bistable type. In this paper, we shall consider a free boundary problem with two layers satisfying the zero flux boundary condition and shall show that the Hopf bifurcation can not occur as a parameter varies.

  • BiNem$^{(R)}$ displays have entered volume manufacturing in 2009. Applications range from e-labels to e-readers. We have developed 6-inch $960{\times}720$ pixels passive matrix BiNem prototypes achieving 40 % brightness and fluid user interface based on partial image / dynamic pointer addressing. Active-matrix addressing is proposed to provide even faster operation.
