In order to treat the landfill leachate, $UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$ system connected with biological treatment was investigated, and proper pretreatment methods were examined to reduce the load on the system considering economical and technical efficiency. It was more profitable to put $H_2O_2$ into the system in the early stage for the sample which was treated with $H_2SO_4$ to decrease alkalinity and with $FeCl_3-6H_2O$ flocculation. Because the required reaction time run up by increasing $H_2O_2$ input amount, though the COD was reduced slightly, the optimal $H_2O_2$ input amount should be determined for the desired COD and the economical efficiency. The appropriate way to get the lowest COD in the shortest time was the method to treat the sample which was controlled to pH 3.5 after adjusting to pH 12 and put 500 ppm $H_2O_2$ into the system. In that case, to increase $H_2O_2$ input amount was not profitable for the system efficiency. The sufficient photocatalytic excited time was required to reduce the photocatalytic decomposition time for the sample which was gone through the alkali state.
Species diversity is one of the most important specifications of biological societies. Diversity of organisms, measurement of variety and examination of those hypotheses that are about reasons of diversity are such as affairs that have been desired by the ecologists for a long time. In this research, diversity of plant species in forest region, numbers of 60 sample plots in 256.00 square meters have been considered in random - systematic inventory was considered. In each sample plot, four micro-plots in 2.25 square meters in order to study on herbal cover, were executed that totally 240 micro-plots were considered. At each plot six diversity indices in relation to physiographic factors (slope, geographical aspect and altitude from the sea level) were studied. The results indicate that species diversity is more in the northern direction and also species diversity in slops less than 30% has the most amounts. Factor of altitude from the sea level did not have meaningful relation with species diversity. Through study on correlation of the numbers of species in sample plots with indices and also process and role of indices in different processors of analysis, Simpson's reciprocal index was suggested as suitable index in this type of studies.
Wasabies showing mosaic symptoms were collected and extracted for virus purification. Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) was identified as causal agent by electron microscopy and nucleic acid and coat protein analyses. TMV strains were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). TMV was identified as W and C strain in wasabi. The results of host reaction indicated that this virus induced local lesions on Nicotiana tabacum cv. Bright Yellow and N. glutinosa, leaf spots on Chenopodium amaranticolor and mosaic symptoms on wasabi. Rot shape virus particles were observed and was about 300 nm in length. About 6.5 kb single RNA molecule was observed from extracted viral RNA sample and 26 KDa coat protein was detected in denatured acrylamide gel. Infection ratio of TMV was 8% for the first cultivation year, but was 22% for the second year when TMV-W antiserum was used. The results of this experiment showed that infection ratios of both TMV-W and TMV-C strains were higher compared to that of TMV-P strain.
Understanding of a clinical trial is essential in developing clinical guideline and adopting evidence based practice. In designing and executing clinical trials, following ethical requirements should be considered : social value, scientific validity, fair subject selection, informed consent, favorable risk-benefit ratio, institutional review board, and respect for human subjects. According to the stage of drug development, purpose of trials, accumulated scientific data, clinical trials for drug development are classified as phase 1, 2, 3, and 4. Phases of clinical trials can be overlapped and the judgment of entering into the next phase should be considered highly strategically. In reading, evaluating and interpreting clinical trial reports, various skills and challenges exist. Patient sample composition, trial duration, selection of endpoints, responders and non-responders, placebo effect, patient recruitment, and extrapolation to the real world are the examples of those challenges. Treatment success will come from the well balanced approach of evidence based decision making and consideration of specific single case.
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is high resolution medical imaging system which is obtaining image inside biological objects with non-destructive method. OCT system is based on Michelson interferometer with a reciprocating mirror in the reference arm and a biological object in the sample arm. The obtained OCT image suffers from a granular or mottled image, called speckle. Speckle is caused by random interferences between reflected coherence waves. In this paper, we propose effective speckle reduction method that uses wavelet transform. With wavelet domain image, sub-windowing and thresholding are performed. Finally, speckle reduction experiments for Misgurnus mizolepis skin and rat eye images are shown.
We presented the automatic extraction technique of a biological internal organization from full-color continuous images. It was implemented using the localized homogeneousness of color intensity, and also using the continuity between neighboring images. Moreover, we set the "four-level status value" of area condition as a value showing "area possibility. This played important role of preventing a miss-judgement of area definition. These our approach had a beneficial effect on tracking color and shape change of the interest area in continuous extraction. As a resell we succeeded in extraction of mouse's stomach from continuous 50 images.

Traditional wet chemical methods for testing of soil properties require extensive time and labor, and cause the discharge of pollutants, making them undesirable for routine soil analyses. This research was conducted to improve the accuracy of soil properties in soil fertility assessments. A total of 140 finely ground soil samples were used to obtain accurate calibrations and validation for estimating soil moisture, OM, and T-N. Finely ground soil samples satisfied the improved accuracy for routine NIR measuring of the field soils. The results indicated that NIR spectroscopy could be used as a routine method for quantitatively determining OM, moisture, and T-N of field soil, although this technique requires many combinations of sample pretreatments and data manipulations to obtain optimal predictions.
Microfluidics and BioMEMStechnology has increasingly been used as a tool for studying small volumes oftissue and even individual cells. One of the most important benefits ofmicrofluidic technology is the potential to build devices that analyze and sortmammalian cells. The "sorting problem" typically requires that a fewcells be selected and isolated from a larger population of hundreds, thousandsor even millions of other cells. For example, cancer tumor cells may resideamong a large population of healthy cells, but it would be of great interest toidentify, isolate and study only the cancer cells. In another application, onemay want to determine the number of white blood cells within a sample of blood. We have developed microfluidic devices that enable researchers to select cellsfrom a population by a variety of methods, including antibody staining, dielectrophoretic selection, and physical size selection. These devices haveapplications in cancer research where cancer cells must be identified fromnormal tissue, but where only small samples of tissue are available. In thistalk, we will present some of our microfluidic cell sorting devices, discusstheir physical principles, and their use in biological applications.
Bioconverted linolenic acid (bLNA) obtained from linolenic acid by Pseudomonas aeruginosa PR3, showed anti-fungal activity against plant pathogens such as B. cinerea, F. oxysporum, F. solani, P. capsici and C. capsici. The oil sample also showed anti-fungal activity with MIC values, ranging from >250 to >1,000 ${\mu}g/ml$. Varied concentrations of bLNA had a great potential effect on spore germination of different fungi.
Computer aided molecular modeling can help to predict the three dimensional structure of the polypeptide without the sample. The study on soybean Bowman-Birk protease inhibitor (SBI) is valuable, because it has been recently known that SBI possesses anticarcinogenic activities and immune-stimulating properties. SBI has several isoinhibitors, whose isolation and characterization were reported in 1990. Among these, DII inhibits trypsin only. The different inhibitory specificities cannot be explained only by their different primary sequences, but is possible with further assistance by the study on their different three dimensional structures. The study on the three dimensional structure of DII using homology method is reported in this paper.
