A laboratory experiment was performed to investigate simultaneous removal of phosphorus and nitrogen from raw sewage by intermittently aerated activated sludge process packed with aluminum and silver plate. Two continuous experimental process, i.e. an intermittently aerated activated sludge process, and an intermittently aerated activated sludge process with an aluminum and silver plate packed into the reactor were compared. The pitting corrosion of aluminum does not affect the performance of the biological treatment. The amounts of Al eluted from aluminum plate 17 mg to 60.6 mg in this experimental conditions, and Al/P mole ratio were from 3.31 to 11.25. The total nitrogen removal efficiency in Run E were $60.6\%$ at the HRT of 12 hours. The effluent $PO_4-P$ concentration as low as $1.0\;mg/\iota$ could have been obtained during the continuous experiment in Run E at HRT of 12 hours.

Leachate from landfill sites contains high organics, chloride and ammonium nitrogen in concentration which might be potentially major pollutants to surface and groundwater environment. Most of landfill leachate treatment plants in Korea consist of biological processes to remove BOD and nitrogen. However, the efficiencies of refractory organics removal, nitrification and denitrification have not met frequently the national effluent regulation of wastewater treatment facility, especially in winter season. Simultaneous removal of organics and nitrogen from leachate is strongly necessitated to meet the national regulation on effluents from leachate treatment facilities. The intermittently aerated biological activated carbon fluidized bed(IABACFB) process was applied to treat real landfill leachates containing refractory organics and high concentration of ammonium nitrogen. The IABACFB reactor consisted of a single bed in which BAC fluidizing and an aerating column. The fluidized bed is intermittently aerated through the blower located at the aerating column. Experiments were performed to evaluate the applicability of Intermittently Aerated BACFB for simultaneous removal of refractory organic carbon and ammonium nitrogen of leachate. Organics and ammonia nitrogen($NH{_4}{^+}-N$)are oxidized during the aerobic stage, and nitrite-nitrate nitrogen($NO{_x}{^-}-N$) are removed to nitrogen gas through denitrification reaction during anoxic state. The IABACFB reactor condition reached a steady state within 40 days since the reactors had been operated. The blowing mode of 60 min.-On/60 min.-OFF is more compatible to remove TOC and ($NH{_4}{^+}-N$) operated. The blowing mode of 60 min.-On/60 min.-OFF is more compatible to remove TOC and ($NH{_4}{^+}-N$) simultaneously than the mode of 30 min.-On/90 min.-OFF. The average removal efficiencies of TOC, the refractory organic carbon, and the average efficiencies of nitrification and denitrification were 90%, 75%, 80%, 95%, respectively.
This study was conducted to investigate anoxic-RBC (rotating biological contactor) and its application in advanced municipal wastewater treatment process to remove biologically organics and ammonia nitrogen. Effluent COD and nitrogen concentration increased as the increase of volumetric loading rate. But, the concentration changes of NO$_2$$\^$-/ -N and NO$_3$$\^$-/ -N were little, as compared to COD and NH$_4$$\^$+/ -N. When the volumetric loading rate increased, COD removal efficiency and nitrification appeared very high as 96.7∼98.8% and 92.5∼98.8%, respectively. However, denitrification rate decreased to 76.2∼88.0%. These results showed that the change of volumetric loading rate affected to the denitrification rate more than COD removal efficiency or nitrification rate. The surface loading rates applied to RBC were 0.13~6.0lg COD/㎡-day and 0.312∼1.677g NH$_4$$\^$+/-N㎡-day and they were increased as the increase of volumetric loading rate. However, the nitrification rate showed higher than 90%. The thickness of the biofilm in RBC was 0.130 ∼0.141mm and the density of biofilm was 79.62∼83.78mg/㎤. They were increased as surface loading rate increased. From batch kinetic tests, the k$\_$maxH/ and k$\_$maxN/ were obtained as 1.586 g C/g VSS-day, and 0.276 g N/g VSS-day, respectively. Kinetic constants of denitrifer in anoxic reactor, Y, k$\_$e/, K$\_$s/, and k were 0.678 mg VSS/mg N, 0.0032 day$\^$-1/, 29.0 mg N/l , and 0.108 day$\^$-l/, respectively. P and K$\_$s/, values of nitrification and organics removal in RBC were 0.556 g N/㎡-day and 18.71 g COD/㎡-day, respectively.

The high concentration of N in the wastewater from livestock farming generally renders the efficiency of the wastewater treatment. Therefore, removal of N in livestock wastewater is crucial for successful treatment. The current study was conducted to investigate the optimum conditions for partial nitrification under anaerobic condition following nitritation in TPAD-BNR(two-phase anaerobic digestion-biological nitrogen removal) operating system. Sequential operating test to stimulate partial nitrification in reactor showed that partial nitrification occurred at a ratio of 1.24 in $NO_2{^-}$-N:$NH_4{^+}$-N. With this result, a wide range of factors affecting stable nitritation were examined through regression analysis. In the livestock wastewater treatment procedure, the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and pH range for optimum nitrite accumulation in the reactor were 1-1.5 days and 7-8, respectively. It was appeared that accumulation of $NO_2{^-}$-N in the reactor is due to inhibition of the $NO_2{^-}$-N oxidizer by free ammonia (FA) while the effect of free nitrous acid was minimal. Nitrification was not influenced by DO concentration at a range of 2.0-3.0 mg/L and the difference in the growth rate between $NH_4{^+}$-N oxidizer and $NO_2{^-}$-N oxidizer was dependent on the temperature in the reactor.
The temperature effect at $20^{\circ}$ and $10^{\circ}$ on the nutrient removal efficiency was evaluated in the combined biological nutrient removal system (CBNR) with anaerobic-intermittent aerobic-oxic reactors. The test was conducted under the conditions of various ratios of intermittent aeration time and distribution of influent raw water to CBNR. The removal efficiencies of organics, nitrogen and phosphorus were a little bit better at $20^{\circ}$ than at $10^{\circ}$. However the large difference of temperature effect on the nutrient removal efficiency between $20^{\circ}$ and $10^{\circ}$ was not appeared because of highly sustained MLSS concentrations in the reactors and controlled intermittent aeration time. In the removal of phosphorus, Mode III (50/70 min in aeration on/off time, 3 times of intermittent aeration) showed more effective compared with short aeration time of Mode IV. In case of N, P removal, the denitrification rate was lower in Mode A with splitted inflow into anaerobic and intermittent aeration basins than in Mode B with sole inflow into anaerobic basin.

Constructed wetlands are being used for the removal of nutrients from livestock wastewater. However, natural vegetation typically used in constructed wetlands does not have marketable value. As an alternative, agronomic plants grown under flooded or saturated soil conditions that promote denitrification can be used. Studies on constructed wetlands for swine wastewater were conducted in wetland cells that contained either natural wetland plants or a combination of soybeans and rice for two years with the objective of maximum nitrogen reduction to minimize the amount of land required for terminal treatment. Three systems, of two 3.6 by 33.5 m wetland cells connected in series were used; two systems each contained a different combination of emergent wetland vegetation: rush/bulrush (system 1) and bur-reed/cattail (system 2). The third system contained soybean (Glycine max) in saturated-soil-culture (SSC) in the first cell, and flooded rice (Oryza sativa) in the second cell. Nitrogen (N) loading rates of 3 and $10kg\;ha^{-1}\;day^{-1}$ were used in the first and second years, respectively. These loading rates were obtained by mixing swine lagoon liquid with fresh water before it was applied to the wetland. The nutrient removal efficiency was similar in the rush/bulrush, bur-reed/cattails and agronomic plant systems. Mean mass removal of N was 94 % at the loading rate of $3kg\;N\;ha^{-1}\;day^{-1}$ and decreased to 71% at the higher rate of $10kg\;N\;ha^{-1}\;day^{-1}$. The two years means for above-ground dry matter production for rush/bulrushes and bur-reed/cattails was l2 and $33Mg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. Flooded rice yield was $4.5Mg\;ha^{-1}$ and soybean grown in saturation culture yielded $2.8Mg\;ha^{-1}$. Additionally, the performance of seven soybean cultivars using SSC in constructed wetlands with swine wastewater as the water source was evaluated for two years, The cultivar Young had the highest yield with 4.0 and $2.8Mg\;ha^{-1}$ in each year, This indicated that production of acceptable soybean yields in constructed wetlands seems feasible with SSC using swine lagoon liquid. Two microcosms studies were established to further investigate the management of constructed wetlands. In the first microcosm experiment, the effects of swine lagoon liquid on the growth of wetland plants at half (about 175 mg/l ammonia) and full strength (about 350 mg/l ammonia) was investigated. It was concluded that wetland plants can grow well in at least half strength lagoon liquid. In the second microcosm experiment, sequencing nitrification-wetland treatments was studied. When nitrified lagoon liquid was added in batch applications ($48kg\;N\;ha^{-1}\;day^{-1}$) to wetland microcosms the nitrogen removal rate was four to five times higher than when non-nitrified lagoon liquid was added. Wetland microcosms with plants were more effective than those with bare soil. These results suggest that vegetated wetlands with nitrification pretreatment are viable treatment systems for removal of large quantities of nitrogen from swine lagoon liquid.
The effluent discharge standards of industrial wastewater has become more stringent since 2003. Many industrial wastewater treatment plants has been upgraded to advanced treatment facilities. There are high concentrations of nitrate(>200 mg/L) and ammonium(>50 mg/L) nitrogen in the acrylic fiber wastewater of H textile Co. Wastewater from acrylic fiber industry containing acrylonitrile, which may affect the subsequent biological treatment process. Manufacturing of acrylic fiber also produces shock loadings. Excessive acrylonitrile and polymer debris produced in the polymerization process was screened, coagulated with CaO and settled down. A preaeration system was added to treat this high pH effluent to remove volatile organic compound and ammonia nitrogen by the air stripping effect. it was found that nitrification rate was not sufficient in the Anoxic/Oxic(AO) process. One denitrification tank was converted to nitrification reactor to extend HRT of nitrification. Nitrification rate of ammonia nitrogen was promoted from 32% to 67% by this modification and effluent nitrogen concentration was well satisfied with the effluent standards since then.

There are increasingly important financial incentives and environmental consideration to improve the effluent quality of wastewater from domestic and industrial users. The activated sludge process is a widely used biological wastewater treatment process. The activated sludge process is complicated due to the many factors such as the variation of influent flowrate and concentration, the complexity of biological reactions and the various operation conditions. Nowadays, not only suspended solids and residual carbon, but also nitrogen and phosphorous concentration of the effluent water must be taken into account for the design and operation of wastewater treatment plants. Also, the effluent quality to be met are more stringent. Therefore, an intelligent control approach is required in order to successful biological nitrogen removal. In this paper, the strategies for dosage of extra carbon in the anoxic zone and DO concentration in the aerobic zone are presented and evaluated through the simulation using the denitrification layout of the IWA simulation benchmark implemented by Matlab$\^$/5.3/Simulink$\^$/3.0. The control strategy to achieve sufficient denitrification rates in an anoxic zone. Methanol is used as an external extra carbon source. The external extra carbon source is required for the nitrogen removal process because nitrogen and organic concentration are fluctuated in the influent flowrate. The dissolved oxygen is calculated by So concentration in the activated sludge model NO.1. The air flowrate of each aerobic reactor is intelligently controlled to achieve the predefined setpoints. Air flowrate is adjusted by the fuzzy logic controller that includes two inputs and one output. The objective function for the optimization procedure is designed to improve effluent quality and reduce the operating cost.
Laboratory experiments were aimed to evaluate the effect of nitrate as a electron acceptor during the biological phosphorus uptake and to investigate the microbial community. Anaerobic-anoxic sequencing batch reactor (SBR) compared the removal behaviour to anaerobic-oxic SBR, both SBRs maintained lower effluent quality with 1.0 mgp/1. Anaerobic-anoxic SBR was able to remove additional 5.0 to 7.0 mg (P+N)/ι than other biological nutrient removal (BM) system. Therefore, it was proposed that the anaerobic-anoxic SBR was more effective at weak sewage. From the results of the maicrobial community analysis, it can be inferred that denitrifying bacteria and polyphosphate accumulating bacteria coexist in anaerobic-anoxic SBR during stable condition for removing the nitrogen and phosphorus. Particularly, it was suggested that the Zoogloea ramigera in the $\beta$-subclass of proteobacteria and the Alcaligenes defragrans of the Rhodocyclus group in the $\beta$-subclass of proteobacteria played a major role for removing the nitrogen and phosphorus as dPAOs (denitrifying phosphate accumulating organisms).

The amount of waste water generated from the domestic sources is consistently increasing in proportion to economic growth, and the conventional activated sludge process is widely being used for general waste water treatment. But the ministry of environment becomes stringthent treatment standards of N and P (less than 20mg/L of N, 2mg/L of P) to prevent the eutrophication of lake water, and therefore highly advanced treatment technology is required not only in the existing treatment plants where the activated sludge process is being used, but also in newly constructed treatment plants for the treatment of N and P. This study is aimed at highly operating the engineering technology method was developed by domestic to eliminate N and P at the same time. Experiments were conducted in the treatment plant located in Yong In city. The bioreactor was started from the principal equipment for the elimination of N and P and the elimination of organic compounds. It consists of an internal recycle piping from the end of the aerobic tank to the anoxic tank and external recycle piping from the final settling basin to the denitrification tank. By experiment of 4 types separate inflow of waste water to the denitrification tank and the anaerobic tank, and changes in staying time at the anoxic tank and the aerobic tank, the elimination of organic compounds in each type and the relationship in the efficiency between the elimination of N and P were researched.
