  • Parathyroid hormone is the most important endocrine regulator of calcium concentration. Its N-terminal fragment (1-34) has sufficient activity for biological function. Recently, site-directed mutagenesis studies demonstrated that substitutions at several positions within shorter analogues (1-14) can enhance the bioactivity to greater than that of PTH (1-34). However, designing the optimal sequence combination is not simple due to complex combinatorial problems. In this study, support vector machines were introduced to predict the biological activity of modified PTH (1-14) analogues using mono-substituted experimental data and to analyze the key physicochemical properties at each position that correlated with bioactivity. This systematic approach can reduce the time and effort needed to obtain desirable molecules by bench experiments and provide useful information in the design of simpler activating molecules.

  • Conjugated diacetylene supramolecules are interesting biomimetic materials in view of application to chemical and label-free biological sensors. These supramolecules are unique in changing color from blue to red upon specific binding events. Various binding events including viruses, toxins, glucose, and ionic interactions have been reported detectible. Here, we focus on fabrication of polydiacetylene supramolecule dot array patterns on solid substrates by using a conventional microarrayer. Each dot is found to possess the color-changing property as well as the fluorescence self-emission. This technique allows us, for the first time, to fabricate biochips based on polydiacetylene supramolecules. Label-free detection of small molecules and biological targets will be discussed.

  • Possibility of biological nitrogen treatment was tested in wastewaters with low C/N ratio. Chlorella kessleri was inoculated at $10^6\;cell/mL$ of initial density in two different artificial wastewaters: one that contained glucose for organic carbon source and the other without carbon source. Nitrate could be successfully reduced below 10 mg $NO_3/mL$ from initial nitrate concentration of 560 mg $NO_3/mL$ in 10 days even in the wastewater without carbon source, This 98% removal of nitrate without extra organic carbon source lights up the future of biological wastewater treatment, where the insufficient ability of nitrogen removal is a major problem.

  • Recently, the advanced membrane separation technology has even been applied to the post treatment to biological process of wastewater treatment, since the efficiency of biological treatment significantly depends on maintaining a high biomass concentration in the bioreator. Particularly, anaerobic microbes in the biological system have slower growth rates than aerobic microbes and thus it takes a long hydaulic retention time(HRT) to prevent biomass washout in the completely mixed anaerobic digester. The anaerobic sludge also has poor settleability owing to its diffusible and somewhat filamentous nature. Moreover, the residual gasification and consequent sludge rise in the clarifier compartment become a considerable problem, which proves that complete separation of biological solids is difficult.
