Doping Effects of Water-Soluble Poly(3-thiopheneacetic acid) (P3TAA) and its Gel

  • The doping behaviors of water-soluble poly(3-thiopheneacetic acid) (P3TAA) and ie gel using I$_2$and concentrated HCIO$_4$aqueous solutions were investigated by UV-Visible absorption spectrometer. Electrical conductivity of tile doped polyhiophene gel was also studied. I$_2$-doping of water-soluble P3TAA gave rise to a new broad polaron peak at around 749 nm, which corresponds to localization of electron. It was found that doping ability of P3TAA gel was strikingly dependent on the concentration of HCIQ solution.

  • We constructed an efficient T-vector, pTQEST216T that employed an engineered esterase as an indicator for direct cloning of PCR products. After ligation of the XcmI-digested vector with PCR products, this cloning system could easily discriminate positive clones owing to insertional inactivation of the esterase reporter. Additionally, PCR products were efficiently cloned into this vector without the gel purification steps, owing to the well-designed multi-cloning site that was in-frame fused at the circularly permutated gap of the reporter.

  • In this paper, we have implemented the telemedicine system which has a color image system and a biosignal processor. The inputted image is acquisited to 512 by 480 color image data. The col looted data is compressed to 1/5 of the original image data by using 1/5 and compression algorithm. A biological signals are inputted by 12 bit A/D converter into the system. In case of using 2400bps modem, a frame full color image data and biological information data needed 10 minutes in transmission.

  • Diet composition of amphibians usually reflects the distribution of potential prey within habitats, as well as their diet preference. We identified the diet items of Japanese tree frog (Hyla japonica) using a stomach flushing method in a rice paddy for the establishment of bio-monitoring systems of landscape changes. During the reproductive period, 71% of calling males had empty stomachs. All prey items in the stomachs belonged to the phylum Arthropoda, from eight orders of Insecta and one order of Arachnida. Among insect prey, the most common items in the stomachs were adults of beetles, flies and bugs, and larvae of butterflies and moths. There was a significant positive correlation between the body mass of Japanese tree frogs and the volume of prey items. Our results can provide a basic framework to guide the monitoring systems using prey identification of Japanese tree frogs.

Biological Decolorization Characteristics of Dyeing Wastewater (염색폐수의 생물학적 색도제거 연구)

  • The concept for the decolorization in biological dye wastewater treatment systems is based on anaerobic treatment, for the reductive cleavage of the dyes' azo linkages, in combination with aerobic treatment, for the degradation of the products from azo dye cleavage, aromatic amines. Batch tests were conducted to examine the conditions and the factors affecting biological treatment of dye wastewater. From the tests, the removal efficiencies of organics and colors of dyeing wastewater were improved to $COD_{Cr}$ 27% and color 9% by injecting 10% of the domestic wastewater as a cosubstrate, and $COD_{Cr}$ 30%, color 22% with 30% injection of domestic wastewater. Therefore it was proved that decolorization efficiency is demonstrated with domestic wastewater as a cosubstrate. The analysis of aromatic amines in wastewater showed that decolorization was achieved by cometabolism while aromatic amines were produced by cleavage of azo bonds under anaerobic conditions and these products were removed in an aerobic tank subsequently.

  • In order to study the mechanism of biosynthesis of thyroid hormones, radioactive iodine was injected into the rats and thyroid glands were removed. Iodine compounds hydrolyzed by pancreatin viokase were separated by paper chromatography and analyzed by radioautography. Radioautograms showed that the uptake of iodine starts immediately and forms diiodotyrosine through monoiodotyrosine. Evidence supported the possibility that diiodotyrosine is a precursor of thyrosine and triiodothyronine is a degradation product of thyroxine. The rat administered propylthiouracil showed inorganic iodine concentration activity, while the binding activity was prevented.

  • By the end of the $21^st$ century, the world population will surely far exceed the current 6.6 billion, threatening the essential requirements for life due to environmental deterioration and shortened food supply. To overcome this looming threat, we must develop new biotechnologies. There are so many known natural phenomena that we may have neglected, not perceiving them as blessings of nature. Many more remain unknown. We must examine each of them carefully since the many tricky and complicated mechanisms behind simple natural workings could provide us with attractive research targets. How then do we apply these complicated natural mechanisms to agricultural/ industrial production?.

  • The glycosylation pattern of Erythropoietin (EPO), produced by recombinant CHO cells, was studied using the simple and rapid technique of 'Lectin-blotting'. In this experiment we used three different kinds of lectins, MAA(Maackia amurensis agglutinine), RCA(Ricinus communis agglutinine), and DSA(Datura stramonium agglutinine), which bind to the terminal sialic acid, galactose, and the N-acetyllactosamine chain respectively. The lectin-blotting technique was used to analyze the carbohydrate structure of EPO produced in the presence of two physiologically active chemical compounds, ammonium and chloroquine. The effect of the ammonium ion on the glycosylation of EPO was studied because it accumulated in the medium mainly as a by-product of glutamine matabolism. Ammonium chloride significantly inhibited the sialylation of the terminal galactose residue at concentrations of 8mM or more. Chloroquine, a potent inhibitor of glycosylation, inhibited terminal sialylation at concentrations of 100 and 200 $\mu$M, and at a concentration of 300 $\mu$M, also inhibited Nacetyllactosamine chain synthesis.

Automatic Addition Control of the External Carbon Source by the Measurement of ORP in Biological Nitrogen Removal Process (생물학적 질소 제거공정에서 ORP 측정을 통한 외부탄소원의 자동 주입 제어)

  • For the cost-effective biological nitrogen removal (BNR) process whose characteristics of influent have low COD/N ratios, the automatic control system for the addition of external carbon based on oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) data in an anoxic reactor has been developed. In this study, it was carried out with a pilot-scale Bardenpho process which was consisted of anoxic 1, aerobic 1, aerobic 2, anoxic 2, aerobic 3 tank and clarifier. Firstly, the correlation coefficient ($R^2$) of the dosage of external carbon source and ORP value was about 0.97. Consequently, the automatic control system using ORP showed that the dosage of external carbon source was decreased by about 20% compared with a stable dosage of 75 mg/L based on the COD/N ratio of the anoxic influent.

  • Noninvasive multifrequency microwave radiometry using coaxial waveguide antenna has been investigated for a homogeneous and four layer human body model. The coupling between coaxial waveguide antenna and a. biological object is analyzed by use of the FDTD method to obtain the absorbed power patterns in the media. The object studied in this paper is a homogeneous and four-layered lossy medium. The specific absorption rates(SAR) distribution is calculated in each region by use of the steady-state response in FDTD method.
