  • Over last three decades, various biomaterials has been developed and applied in the biomedical market. The practical utilization of biomaterials depends on the study about an appropriate physical and biological response of biomaterials. The modification of biomaterials using various surface treatment methods has recently become an interesting topic in the field of surface engineering. A padient surface is the surface on which a gradually varying chemical composition exists along its length. A large number of research groups have been focused on the preparation of gradient surfaces. Such gradient surface is of particular interest for basic and applied studies of the interactions between biological species and surfaces since the effect of a selected property like wettability or chemical composition can be examined in a single experiment on one surface. The present review focuses on the preparation and characterization of various gradient surfaces, and their interactions with biological species.

  • 3-Roll coating process as a key application technology for manufacturing automotive pre-painted metal-sheets has been studied. The 3-Roll coating system for this study consists of pick-up roll for picking up and distributing coating liquid from the reservoir, metering roll to properly meter coating liquid in metering gap regime, and applicator roll for directly transferring liquid into metal-sheet surface. Flow dynamics and operable coating windows of a polymeric paint (primer) with shear-thinning rheological property have been correlated with processing parameters such as speed ratio and metering gap between pick-up and metering rolls. In the uniform coating regime, dry coating thickness increased with increasing metering gap or decreasing speed ratio. Ribbing and cascade instabilities were observed in low speed and high speed ratio conditions, respectively. It is revealed that lower speed ratio makes severity and wavelength of the ribbing increase, aggravating flow instability in coating systems.

  • In hypersonic aircraft, increase of aerodynamic heat and engine heat leads heat loads in airframe. It could lead structural change of aircraft's component and malfunctioning. Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon fuels which are able to absorb the heat load by undergoing endothermic reactions. In this study, exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene was selected as a model endothermic fuel and experiments on endothermic properties were investigated with pore structure controlled zeolite catalyst using metal deposition. We secured the catalyst that had better endothermic performance than commercial catalyst. The object of this study is inspect catalyst properties which have effect on heat absorption improvement. Synthetic catalyst could be applied to system that use exo-THDCP as endothermic fuel instead of other commercial catalyst.

  • This study investigated how the indicators of quality control are improved by proficiency in the measurement of phosphate concentration. In addition, analysis equipments were to be compared to see if there were any differences in measurements depending on the type of analysis device. In order to find out the effect of the proficiency of the analyst on the analysis results, three analysts measured phosphate concentration seven times in accordance with the Korean water pollution test standards, and met the quality control indices if repeated more than five times. The limit of quantification for phosphate was calculated at 0.02 mg/L. If the analysis devices are different, the absorbance and concentration of the samples near the limit of quantification are statistically significant difference.

  • The feasibility of utilizing food waste leachate as an external carbon source was tested to enhance biological nutrient removal from an industrial wastewater with an average flow rate of $164,800m^3/d$ and a low carbon/nitrogen ratio of 2.8. A considerable improvement in the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus was observed when a certain amount of the leachate, ranging from 70 to $142m^3/d$, was supplemented to the biological industrial wastewater treatment process. The addition of the leachate led to an increase in the BOD/N ratio (4.5) and the removal efficiency of nutritents from 29.7% to 71.7% for nitrogen and from 34.8% to 65.6% for phosphorus. However, an excessive dose of the leachate that significantly exceeded $120m^3/d$ caused serious operational problems, like oil-layer formation in the grit chamber and scum layer in the primary clarifier. Thus, an supplement of food waste leachate at a dose acceptable to an existing facilities can be a practical and effective means to enhance the nutrient removal from industrial wastewater and to dispose of the food waste leachate.

  • This research was carried out to develop the Hanji(Korean paper) sludge·wood particle composite utilizing the waste sludges occurring from the making process of Hanji(Korean paper). At the research, four mixing ratios of white or black sludge to wood particle(10:90, 20:80, 30:70 and 40:60), three types of the resin adhesives(PMDI, urea and phenol resin) and three levels of the densities(0.60, 0.75 and 0.90) were designed to investigate the mechanical properties of Hanji(Korean paper) sludge·wood particle composite. In the white and black sludge·wood particle composites, bending properties(MOR, MOE) showed the decreasing tendency according to the increase of sludge additive, but it was clearly increased with the increase of specific gravity. Also tensile strength had the same tendency as in these bending properties. The internal bond strength of white sludge·wood particle composite had no tendency, but that of black sludge·wood particle composite was decreased as an increase of Hanji sludge additive.

  • In order to develop an algorithm using deep learning, which has been recently applied to various fields, it is necessary to have rich, high-quality learning data. In this paper, we propose an acquisition system for biological signals that simultaneously collects bio-signal data such as optical videos, thermal videos, and voices, which are mainly used in developing deep learning algorithms and useful in derivation of information, and transmit them to the server. To increase the portability of the collector, it was made based on Raspberry Pi, and the collected data is transmitted to the server through the wireless Internet. To enable simultaneous data collection from multiple collectors, an ID for login was assigned to each subject, and this was reflected in the database to facilitate data management. By presenting an example of biological data collection for fatigue measurement, we prove the application of the proposed acquisition system.

  • A new extracellular biopolymer was produced by Methylobacterium organophilum from methanol as a sole carbon and energy source. The purified biopolymer was found to have a high molecular weight of about 4-5$\times$10$^6$ dalton and contained 66% (w/w) of carbohydrate but no polyhydro xybutyrate. Other organic constituents were consisted of protein, pyruvic acid, uronic acid, and acetic acid, whereas content of inorganic ash was 22%. Based on the chemical analysis of the biopolymer by TLC method, the polymer was consisted of glucose, galactose, and mannose with an approximate molar ratio of 2:3:2. The biopolymer solution showed a characteristics of pseudoplastic non-Newtonian fluid. The viscosity of the 1%-biopolymer solution was found to be 18,000 cp at a shear rate, 1 sec$^{-1}$, which was almost 10 times higher than that of a commercial xanthan gum.

  • It was known that crude oil can be mainly divided into saturates, aromatics, resins, and asphaltenes. If microbial biodegradation of asphaltenes is effectively viable, additional oil production will be expected from depleted oil reservoir. Meanwhile, biodegradation can be applied to other aspects, such as the bioremediation of spilled oil. In this case, the biodegradation of asphaltenes also plays an important role. It has been already reported that asphaltenes are decomposed by bacterial consortia. However, the biodegradation mechanism of asphaltenes has not been clearly presented. The major reason is that the molecular structure of asphaltenes is complicated and is mainly in a aggregated form. In this paper, it was presumed that the biodegradation process of asphaltenes may follow the microbial oxidation mechanism of saturates and aromatics which are easier biodegradable than asphaltenes among the crude oil components. In other words, the biodegradation process was explained by serial stages; the contact between asphaltenes and bacteria in the presence of biosurfactants, and the decomposition of alkyl groups and fused-rings within the asphaltene structure.
