Indonesia is well-known as biggest producer of seaweed especially for Eucheuma and Gracilaria and also has huge potential resources and capability to develop seaweed cultivation and product. There are several provinces which have potential resources and have been contributing on seaweed production. The next challenge about seaweed production is using integrated system on brackishwater and marine aquaculture. Furthermore, about 2,000,000 ton of potential seaweed production is not explored yet. This article also tries to figure out some related aspects which are technical, economical and forecasting aspect. There is a disease which named "ice-ice" is one of the main problem and giving a new challenge in developing of problem solving for seaweed cultivation method. Economical parameters are also main important key to find out the feasibility of seaweed cultivation industry. In addition, the seaweed cultivation and production in Indonesia also have potential performance on biofuel resources as a part for solving the world problem on energy demand.
In many countries including China and U.S., researchers are developing methods to use sweetpotato as raw material for biofuel. We consider the sweetpotato is not only a source of green fuel, it eventually will provide various material including paper, adhesives, biodegradable plastics, and secondary metabolites. Sweetpotato is one of the high efficiency crop because it yields more calories per unit area than either maize or potato, and it requires the shortest growing cycle of the root crops grown in the tropics. Sweetpotato is the most useful crop for the coming starchbased industry era. Sweetpotato genetic resources are collected, characterized, evaluated, and maintained by U.S., China, Japan, and the International Potato Center. New varieties of sweetpotato using the proper genetic resources and molecular breeding will be developed to cope with the global food and energy in 21st century.
The transport biofuel is emerging a promising option to realize the sustainable growth of our society. Two biofuels, bioethanol and biodiesel, are currently used in the transport sector. As the production of biofuels is getting activated, the stable supply of the feedstocks is becoming a critical issue. Active works have been carried out to secure the stable supply of the raw materials for the production of biofuels. One approach is the breeding of the energy crops to get higher productivity and / or the desirable fuel properties. The other approach is finding new energy crops which may not be used for edible purpose. First current aspects and challenging issues for the implementation of biofuels have been introduced. Finally the recent works and future prospects on the development of the energy crops are summarized.
Endophytes are defined as microorganisms that spend part of lifetime interior of plant tissues without causing negative effects. They have been used for agricultural purpose, biofuel production, bioremediation, medication, etc. In particular, endophytes have been emerged as a good source for bioactive secondary metabolites. A large number of secondary metabolites are currently being reported. In this report, we focus on the secondary metabolites that were originated from endophytic fungi inhabiting medicinal plants. They were classified into several groups such as nitrogenous compounds, steroids, sulfide-containing metabolites, terpenoids, polyketides, and miscellaneous for discussion of chemical structures and biological activities.

Increasing demands on fossil fuel have led to the unprecedented attraction to microalgal biofuel as an alternative energy. In this study, we investigated growth and lipid productions of microalga Nannochloris oculata under various carbon dioxide or nitrogen source concentrations and irradiance conditions. Biomass production of N. oculata was highest under 2% $CO_2$ with 0.3 flow rate (vvm). In addition, biomass productivities were proportional to the concentration of nitrogen source, whereas lipid biosynthesis was suppressed under higher nitrogen concentration (up to 50 mg/L). High irradiation ($160{\sim}180\;{\mu}mol/m^2{\cdot}s$) enhanced growth rate and lipid production of N. oculata.
Microalgae are likely to become a part of our everyday diet in the near future as they are considered to be rich in proteins, carbohydrates, and high density lipoproteins. They will play a pivotal role in the food cycle of many people around the globe. Use of microalgae in treating wastewater is also one of the disciplines which are luring researchers as this contributes to a sustainable way of exploiting resources while keeping the environment safe. In addition, microalgal biomass also has the potential to be used as a feedstock for producing biofuel, bio fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and other bio-based products. This review presents the different value-added products obtained from microalgal biomass and the applicability of these products commercially.
Continuous production of hydrogen by Ca alginate-immobilized photosynthetic bacteria was studied in a packed-bed bioreactor. The dilution rate and input concentration of carbonaces substrate were selected as operating parameters. To choose the strain for immobilization, hydrogen productivities of Rhodopseudomonas caposulata 10006 and Rhodospirillum rubrum KS-301 were compared through preliminary batch cultures of their free cells: the former was found to show better hydrogen productivity in spite of its lower specific growth rate. For the continuous production of hydrogen by immobilized R capsulata, the optimum dilution rate was about 0.84 h$^{-1}$ . The Immobilized tells gave better hydrogen yield and conversion efficiency than free ones. And a kinetic parameter K'$_{m}$ was determined for the packed-bed bioreactor, being practically constant for a specific range of dilution rates.s.

Environmental issues caused by our dependence on fossil fuels have caused our society to move toward new renewable sources of energy and chemicals. In this study, we develop an integrated process that co-produces butene oligomer (i.e., biofuels) and 1,3-butadiene (i.e., monomer for the production of synthetic rubber). To minimize utility consumption, we conduct heat integration. Then, we conduct a range of techno-economic analysis and life-cycle assessment to investigate economic and environmental feasibility of the proposed process.

Microalgae is becoming a vital component for a circular economy and ultimately for sustainable development. Herein, recent developments in different outcomes of microalgae for wastewater treatment and biorefinery were reviewed. From its primary function as a third-generation resource of biofuel, the usage of microalgae has been diversified as an integral element for the CO2 sequestration and production of economically valuable products (e.g., pharmaceuticals, animal feeds, biofertilizer, biochar, etc.). Principles and recent challenges for each microalgae application were presented to suggest a motivation for future research and the direction of development. The integration of microalgae within the concept of the circular economy was also discussed with various routes of microalgae-based biorefinery.

In order to reduce the effects of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the South Korean government has announced a special platform of technologies as part of an effort to minimize global climate change. To further this effort, the Korean government has pledged to increase low-carbon and carbon neutral resources for biofuel derived from biomass to replace fossil and to decrease levels of carbon dioxide. In general, second generation biofuel produced form woody biomass is expected to be an effective avenue for reducing fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in road transport. It is important that under the new Korean initiative, pilot scale studies evolve practices to produce biomass-to-liquid (BTL) fuel. This study reports the quality characteristics of F-T(Fischer-Tropsch) diesel for production of BTL fuel. Synthetic F-Tdiesel fuel can be used in automotive diesel engines, pure or blended with automotive diesel, due to its similar physical properties to diesel. F-T diesel fuel was synthesized by Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) process with syngas($H_2$/CO), Fe basedcatalyst in low temperature condition($240^{\circ}C$). Synthetic F-T diesel with diesel compositions after distillation process is consisted of $C_{12}{\sim}C_{23+}$ mixture as a kerosine, diesel compositions of n-paraffin and iso-paraffin compounds. Synthetic F-T diesel investigated a very high cetane number, low aromatic composition and sulfur free level compared to automotive diesel. Synthetic F-T diesel also show The wear scar of synthetic F-T diesel show poor lubricity due to low content of sulfur and aromatic compounds compared to automotive diesel.
