  • This is the report of sacroiliac luxation in a Holstein-Friesian cow, describing the progression of the sacroiliac luxation from the onset of its development with changes in estradiol (E2) and serum chemistry. The high estrogen concentration was assumed to be a predisposing factor of the disease that relaxed the pelvic muscles and a secondary slippery finally caused the sacroiliac luxation. The E2 was present at levels four times higher in the cow with sacroiliac luxation (167 pg/mL) than in normal cows. Above normal levels of creatinine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase, and lactate dehydrogenase were also observed in cow with sacroiliac luxation.

  • Escherichia coli-specific phage, KFS-EC1, was isolated and purified from a slaughterhouse. The complete genome of the phage was obtained using Illumina MiSeq platforms. Its assembled genome consisted of a single chromosome of 164,715 bp with a GC content of 40.5%. The phage genome contained 170 hypothetical and 101 functional ORFs, and exhibited orthologous average nucleotide identity values of >95% with other E. coli phages belonging to the family Straboviridae. Additionally, phylogenetic analysis revealed that KFS-EC1 was finally classified into the family Straboviridae of the genus Caudoviricetes. The genome has been deposited in GenBank under the accession number NC_055757.1.

  • The influence of carrageenan addition on the gelatinization of salt-based surimi gels was investigated by measuring compressive properties and Hunter color scale values. Hydrocolloid kappa (${\kappa}$)-carrageenan at 0%, 0.2%, and 1.0% and NaCl (2% w/w), KCl (1.5% w/w), and a mixture of NaCl (2% w/w) and KCl (1.5% w/w), were added to Alaska pollock surimi. Gel compressive properties were assessed by measuring the breaking force and gel strength. The gelling property of ${\kappa}$-carrageenan-induced surimi gel was significantly increased by the incorporation of KCl rather than NaCl. The addition of ${\kappa}$-carrageenan increased the breaking force and gel strength of surimi gels. Gels with 1% ${\kappa}$-carrageenan and KCl had the highest breaking force and gel strength. The addition of ${\kappa}$-carrageenan caused an increase in the whiteness values of the surimi gels.

  • The fishing industry in Europe has faced environmental, economic, and social challenges. Since the early 2000s, a key tool in addressing these challenges has been information and communication technology (ICT), which has helped to modernize fishery systems in European Union (EU) countries. The ICT used in EU fisheries can be categorized broadly as 1) macro-technologies such as satellite and other remote sensing technologies in combination with geographical information systems, 2) micro-technologies adapted for fishing vessels such as echo sounders, ship navigation devices, and mobile communication devices to connect fishermen and consumers, and 3) onshore micro-technologies related to internet technology and mobile devices. The European Monitoring Center on Change has used ICT to effectively manage fisheries bio-resources. This use of ICT has contributed to the development of sustainable and competent fisheries in the 2000s, even though the knowledge-sharing practices involved are contrary to the long tradition of autonomy within the fishery industry.
