Debris Flow Mobility: A Comparison of Weathered Soils and Clay-rich Soils (풍화토와 점성토 위주의 토석류 거동과 유동특성)

  • The risks of debris flows caused by climate change have increased significantly around the world. Recently, landslide disaster prevention technology is more focused on the failure and post-failure dynamics to mitigate the hazards in flow-prone area. In particular, we should define the soil strength and flow characteristics to estimate the debris flow mobility in the mountainous regions in Korea. To do so, we selected known ancient landslides area: Inje, Pohang and Sangju debris flows. Firstly we measured physical and mechanical properties: liquidity index and undrained shear strength by fall cone penetrometer. From the test results, we found that there is a possible relationship between liquidity index and undrained shear strength, $C_{ur}=(1.2/I_L)^{3.3}$, in the selected areas, even though they were different in geological compositions. Assuming that the yield stress is equal to the undrained shear strength at the initiation of sliding, we examined the flow characteristics of weathered soils in Korea. When liquidity index is given as 1, 1.5 and 3.0, the debris flow motion of weathered soils is compared with that of mud-rich sediments, which are known as low-activity clays. At $I_L=1$, it seems that debris flow could reach approximately 250m after 5 minutes. As liquidity index increased from 1 to 3, the debris flow propagation of weathered soils is twice than that of low-activity clays. It may be due to the fact that soil masses mixed with the ambient water and then highly fragmented during flow, thereby leading to the high mobility. The results may help to predict the debris flow propagation and to develop disaster prevention technology at similar geological settings, especially for the weathered soils, in Korea.

Rheological Properties of Cement Paste Mixed with Aqueously Dispersed Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (Single-Walled 탄소나노튜브 수용액 혼입 시멘트 페이스트의 유변학적 특성)

  • Single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) has been used as a material for reinforcing various advanced materials because it has superior mechanical properties. However, pure SWCNT that does not have any functional group has a hydrophobic character, and exists as bundles due to the strong Van der Waals attraction between each SWCNT. Due to these reasons, it is very difficult to disperse SWCNTs in the water. In this work, in order to use SWCNT for production of cementitious composites, SWCNT was first dispersed in water to make an aqueous solution. Sodium deoxycholate (DOC) and Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were chosen as surfactants, and the dosage of DOC and SDS were 2wt% and 1wt%, respectively. Sonication and ultracentrifugation were applied to separate each SWCNT and impurities. Using such processed SWCNT solutions, cement paste was prepared and its shear stress vs. strain rate relationship was studied. The yield stress and plastic viscosity of cement paste were obtained using Bingham model. According to the results in this work, cement pastes made with DOC and SDS showed similar rheological behavior to that of air entrained cement paste. While cement paste made with DOC 2 wt.% SWCNT solution showed similar rheological behavior to that of plain cement paste, cement paste made with SDS 1 wt.% SWCNT solution showed different rheological behavior showing much less yield stress than plain cement paste.

Rheological Properties of Naked Barley Starches (쌀보리 전분 호화액의 리올로지 특성)

  • Rheological properties of naked barley (Songhak and Youngsan) starches were compared. The gelatinized starches at $3{\sim}9%$ concentration showed a Bingham pseudoplastic behavior. Songhak starch had higher values of consistency index and yield stress than those of Youngsan starch. The dependence of consistency index on concentration was mere pronounced in Songhak starch. Consistency index of both starches was exponentially dependent on concentration, but the slopes at $3{\sim}5%\;and\;5{\sim}9%$ starch concentration were different. The activation energies of 7% for Songhak and Youngsan starches were 4.10 and 3.71 Kcal/mole, respectively.

  • Starches obtained from Seipoong and Daeji potato were classified into go starch granules $(>41{\mu}m)$ and small starch granules $(<3{\mu}m)$. Rheological properties of heat-gelatinized starch paste were studied to elucidate difference of the fractionated starches. Heat-gelatinized starch paste of potato showed Bingham pseudo-plastic behavior. The consistency index and yield stress of small starch granule paste were greater than those of large starch granule paste. As starch paste concentration increased, consistency index and yield stress of heat-gelatinized small starch granule paste increased more than those of large one. As measuring temperature increased, consistency index of heat-gelatinized starch paste decreased and temperature depedence was greater in small starch granule paste than in large one.

  • Rheological properties of Shinsunchalbyeo(Japonica) and $Hangangchalbyeo(J{\times}Indica)$ waxy-rice starches gelatinized with thermal or alkali solutions were investigated with rotational viscometer(Brabender Viscotron). The two starches showed Bingham pseudoplastics behavior in $4{\sim}8%$ thermal or alkali gelatinized starch solutions. The shear stress of Hangangchalbyeo starch solution gelatinized with thermal or alkali showed higher values than that of Shinsunchalbyeo starch and the difference of the two varieties gelatinized with alkali showed higher values than that gelatinized with thermal. Consistency index and yield stress values of Hangangchalbyeo starch showed higher than that of Shinsunchalbyeo starch in the two gelatinized methods and the difference of the two varieties gelatinized with alkali showed higher values. And it was higher that the deffendence of consistency index on starch concentration and initial starch concentration of yield stress in the alkali gelatinized samples than those of in the thermal gelatinized ones.

Effect of Reaction Time on the Rheological Properties of Dextran Formed Solution Produced by Crude Dextransucrase from Leuconostoc rnesenteroides Sikhae (Leuconostoc mesenteroides Sikhae의 Crude Dextransucrase 반응시간에 따른 Dextran 생성액의 유변성)

  • Studies on the changes in rheological properties, molecular weight distribution and dextran yield after being reacted in lO%(w/w) sucrose concentration were performed with crude dextransucrase produced from Leuconostoc mesenteroides isolated from Sikhae. The reaction rate of dextran formation was monitored by sugar analysis with HPLC and by the changes in apparent viscosity. According to the periodate oxidation test, the dextran produced in this experiment was estimated to have 89% $\alpha$-(1->6) main linkages and 11% $\alpha$-(1->) side linkages. The rheological properties of the dextran solution formed changed with reaction time, and it was related to the changes in molecular weight distribution of dextran as determined by GPC analysis. As the reaction proceeded, the rheological behavior changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian, showing Binghampseudoplastic and thixothropic flow behavior. The apparent viscosity of dextran formed solution increased with increasing reaction time, reached a maximum value of 2680 cP ($\gamma$=$33.75s^{-1}$, $25^{\circ}C$) by enzyme reaction for 8 hours, and then decreased. The temperature dependency of dextran formed solutions was well expressed by the Arrhenius equation and the activation energy reached a maximum value of 1.69 kcal/mole by enzyme reaction for 8 hours.
