  • This paper proposes a multihoming-based vertical handover scheme using Proxy binding update to minimize handover delay and packet loss while a mobile node moves to a heterogeneous access network. When a mobile node moves to a heterogeneous access network, the proposed scheme can provide a mobile node with fast and seamless handover by performing layer-3 handover using its new interface while the other interface is still communicating in the old access network. The proposed Proxy binding update is different from the Mobile IP binding update in that it includes home addres (HoA) of the old interface instead of the new interface. The performance analysis shows that the proposed scheme can efficiently reduce vertical handover delay and packet loss.

  • High mobility group protein B1 (HMGB1) is a highly conserved, non-histone, chromatin associated nuclear protein encoded by HMGB1 gene. HMGB1 proteins may be general co-factors in Hox-mediated transcriptional activation that facilitate the access of Hox proteins to specific DNA targets. It is unclear that the exact binding interface of Hoxc9DBD and HMGB1. To identify the interface and binding affinity of Hoxc9DBD and HMGB1 A-box, the paramagnetic probe, MTSL was used in NMR titration experiment. It is attached to the N-terminal end of HMGB1 A-box by reaction with thiol groups. The backbone assignment of HMGB1 A-box was achieved with 3D NMR techinques. The 15N-labeled HMGB1 A-box was titrated with MTSL-labeled Hoxc9DBD respectively. Based on the chemical shift changes we can identify the interacting residues and further map out the binding sites on the protein structure. The NMR titration result showed that the binding interface of HMGB1 A-box is around loop-1 between helix-1 and helix-2. In addition, the additional contacts were found in N- and C-terminus. The N-terminal arm region of Hoxc9DBD is the major binding region and the loop between helix1 and helix2 is the minor binding region.

  • Previous biochemical assays and a structural model indicated that the dimer interface of the Hin recombinase is composed of the two a-helices. To elucidate the structure and function of the helix, amino acids in the N-terminal end of the helix, where the two helices contact most, were randomized, and inversion-incompetent mutants were selected. To investigate why the mutants lost their inversion activities, the DNA binding, hix-pairing, invertasome formation, and DNA cleavage activities were assayed using in vivo and in vitro methodologies. Results indicated that the mutants could be divided into 4 classes based on their DNA binding activity. We proposed that the a-helices might place a DNA binding motif of Hin properly to the minor DNA groove of the recombination site. All the mutants except the non-binders were able to perform hix-pairing and invertasome formation, suggesting that the dimer interface is not involved in the process of hix-pairing or invertasome formation. The inversion-incompetent phenotype of the binders was caused by the inability of mutants to perform the DNA cleavage activity. The less binders exhibited wild-type level of hix-pairing activity because the hix-pairing activity overcomes the DNA binding defect of the less binders. This phenotype of the less binders suggests that the binding domains of Hin could mediate Hin-Hin interaction during hix-pairing..

  • Binding the object-oriented programming language C++ with a database management system provides a persistency to C++ programming objects so that objects can persist after program termina~,on. In such a binding system, we can manage a persistent object same as that we use a transient object and also use database management facilities such as transaction management and concurrency control. This paper presents a method providing the persistency to C++ programming objects in the binding system. We propose an improved interface based on C++ binding of ODMG-97 and present the design and implementation technique of it. The proposed interface provides a seamless interface for creating objects of the persistent capable class. We can create a persistent object without its class name as we do not give a class name when creating a transient object. Also, we guarantee the type compatibilty between the obiect created in database and the obiect created in main memory.

  • Crystal structure of TRAF6 in complex with TRAF6-binding sites from CD40 was previously determined. The structure revealed a distinct TRAF6-binding groove of CD40, the key structural determinant of interaction. The structural information leads to a proposed TRAF6-binding motif. This allows the identification of TRAF6-binding sequences in the hIRAK protein, whose functional requirement in IL-1/Toll-like receptor superfamilies-mediated signal transduction is further demonstrated using site-directed mutagenesis. The mutational effects of hIRAK on the down-stream NF-kB signaling shows the importance of the TRAF6 interface for signaling by IL-1/Toll-like receptor superfamilies.

  • Some gate valves are susceptible to pressure locking and thermal binding which prevent the safety function. The safety related gate valves susceptible to pressure locking and thermal binding shall be identified and taken preventive actions to ensure the safety function. The identification of the gate valves susceptible to pressure locking and thermal binding needs the evaluation of system design, valve and piping arrangement, test requirements, and operating conditions. Application of preventive methods should consider the system safety function, applicability, effectiveness, interface with system design, and cost. The selection procedure of valves susceptible to pressure locking and thermal binding can be effectively used in industry including nuclear power plants. In order to prevent the pressure locking, the hole can be drilled through the one disc of upstream side or down stream and the external equalizing line can be installed from bonnet to downstream or upstream. The double disc parallel seat valve type can be used instead of flexible wedge gate valve to prevent the thermal binding. The identification of gate valves susceptible to pressure locking and thermal binding, and preventive actions will meet the regulatory requirements and enhance the availability and safety of plants.

  • Microstructure modification and electrochemical properties are investigate to estimate the effects of internal chlorides on the steel corrosion in the blended cement systems. According to the test results, slag cement system showed high chloride binding capacity and low corrosion rate. The impedance data showed three distince arcs from lowest(mHz) frequency to highest (MHz) frequency due to product layer, interfacial reaction and bulk matrix. Through the microstructural investigation, fine steel-matrix interface of slag cement system was observed but rough steel-matrix interface of OPC system was observed. Friedel's salt was thought that the substantial material contributed to the chloride binding of slag cement system.

  • Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis(ESCA) allowes the determination of the elemental composition and the bonding state of the surface atomes in the interface between two materials. In the binding energies of ESCA spectrum, there are zero error, voltage scaling error and random error. Accurate analysis of the intensity energy response functions and accurate calibration of the energy scale are essential to use X-ray photoelectron spectron meter. At the results of the calibration of the ESCA spectra in the copper and cordierite (Mg2Al4Si5kO18) interfaces, the errors relative to the copper are -3.03 eV for the zero error -z,-197 ppm for the voltage scaling error -V and 6.9 meV for the random error -R. The method of the calibration is able to apply for the binding energy calibration of the another ESCA spectra.

  • The present study surveys the concrete properties-concerned factors influencing the chloride threshold level for steel corrosion in concrete, altogether with supporting experimental works, in particular, chloride binding capacity, buffering capacity, condition of steel-concrete interface and cement replacement. It concluded that the order of the dominance on CTL is such that chloride binding < buffering capacity of cement matrix < physical condition of steel-concrete interface. This is attributed to the fact that calcium hydroxide does not form a continuous layer on the steel surface and that bound chlorides are released at the stage of corrosion initiation.
