  • This paper deals with a density estimation method in binary choice models that can be regarded as a statistical inverse problem. We use an orthogonal basis to estimate density function and consider the choice of an appropriate truncation parameter to reflect the model complexity and the prediction accuracy. We propose a data-dependent rule to choose the truncation parameter in the context of binary choice models. A numerical simulation is provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.

  • In this study, the mechanisms of binary droplet collision were studied with diesel, ethanol and purified water. The droplet collisions of liquid droplet have been investigated for the same droplet diameter. In order to obtain the digital images of the droplet collision behavior, the experimental equipment was composed of the droplet generating system and the droplet visualization system. The droplets were produced by the vibrating orifice monodisperse generator. The visualization system consisted of a long distance microscope, a light source, and a high speed camera. The outcomes of binary droplet collision can be divided into four regimes, bouncing, coalescence, reflexive separation and stretching separation. The impact angle and the relative velocity of binary droplet are main parameters of collision phenomena, so the transition mechanism of droplet collision can be divided by the impact parameter.

  • We discuss the influence of annular binary filters on the axial PSF of imaging systems which are apodized by a radiallysymmetric filter and have spherical aberration and coma. In this paper we consider a whole family of annular binary fIlters in two cases. First, the binary filters are composed of two transparent annuli of the same area. Second, the binary filters are composed of a central clear circle and a concentric annular aperture with area bigger than that of the inner circle. In order to investigate the influence of the proposed filters on the axial PSF, we may use the axial resolution gains, which evaluate in terms of the FWHM of the intensity in the focal region of an apodized imaging system in comparison with that corresponding to a nonapodized one. We evaluate the PSF for the conventional and confocal systems having an aberration. ation.

  • Main objectives of this study were to investigate accuracy, bias and power of linear and threshold model segregation analysis methods for detection of major genes in categorical traits in farm animals. Maximum Likelihood Linear Model (MLLM), Bayesian Linear Model (BALM) and Bayesian Threshold Model (BATM) were applied to simulated data on normal, categorical and binary scales as well as to disease data in pigs. Simulated data on the underlying normally distributed liability (NDL) were used to create categorical and binary data. MLLM method was applied to data on all scales (Normal, categorical and binary) and BATM method was developed and applied only to binary data. The MLLM analyses underestimated parameters for binary as well as categorical traits compared to normal traits; with the bias being very severe for binary traits. The accuracy of major gene and polygene parameter estimates was also very low for binary data compared with those for categorical data; the later gave results similar to normal data. When disease incidence (on binary scale) is close to 50%, segregation analysis has more accuracy and lesser bias, compared to diseases with rare incidences. NDL data were always better than categorical data. Under the MLLM method, the test statistics for categorical and binary data were consistently unusually very high (while the opposite is expected due to loss of information in categorical data), indicating high false discovery rates of major genes if linear models are applied to categorical traits. With Bayesian segregation analysis, 95% highest probability density regions of major gene variances were checked if they included the value of zero (boundary parameter); by nature of this difference between likelihood and Bayesian approaches, the Bayesian methods are likely to be more reliable for categorical data. The BATM segregation analysis of binary data also showed a significant advantage over MLLM in terms of higher accuracy. Based on the results, threshold models are recommended when the trait distributions are discontinuous. Further, segregation analysis could be used in an initial scan of the data for evidence of major genes before embarking on molecular genome mapping.

  • In this paper, a new estimation algorithm for the rotor speed for SRM drives is described. The algorithm is implemented by the binary observer. The stability and robustness of the binary observer for the parameter variations of the SRM are proved by variable structure control theory. Variable speed control of the SRM is accomplished by the estimated speed. Experiment results verify that the binary observer is able to estimate the speed.

  • Vapor-liquid equilibrium apparatus is designed and set up. The vapor-liquid equilibrium data of the binary system HFC125/134a are measured in the range between 268.15 and 283.15K at five compositions. Twenty-five equilibrium data are obtained. To verify consistency of these data, they are tested for thermodynamic consistency. Based upon the present data, the binary interaction parameter for CSD and RKS equation of state is calculated at five isotherms and comparison with the data in the open literatures is made. Results of Nagel and Bier are in very good agreements with those from this study within 0.32∼1.11% for bubble point pressure and -0.66∼0.18% for vapor mole fraction.

  • Vapor-liquid equilibrium apparatus is designed and set up. The vapor-liquid equilibrium data of the binary system HFC32/134a are measured in the range between 258.15 and 283.15K at compositions of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mole fraction of HFC32. Twenty-two equilibrium data are obtained. Based upon the present data, the binary interaction parameter for Carnahan-Starling-De Santis equation of state is calculated. Temperature range of data is extended to 313.04K using the data in the open literatures. Interaction parameters are determined at nine isotherms.

  • Brushless DC(BLDC) motor have been increasingly used in machine tools and robotics applications due to the reliability and the efficiency. In control of BLDC motor, it is important to construct the controller which is robust to parameter variations and external disturbances. Variable structure controller(VSC) has been known as a powerful tool in robust control of time varying systems. In practical systems, however, VSC has a high frequency chattering which deteriorates system performances. In this paper, a binary controller(BC) which takes the form of VSC and MRAC combined is presented to solve this problem. BC consists of the primary loop controller and the external loop controller to change the gain of primary loop controller smoothly. So it can generate the continuous control input and is insensitive to parameter variations in the given domain. To confirm the validity, various investigations of control characteristics for various design parameters in a position control system of BLDC motor are carried out. • We consider methods of estimating a binary regression function using a nonparametric kernel estimation when there is only one covariate. For this, the Nadaraya-Watson estimation method using single and double bandwidths are used. For choosing a proper smoothing amount, the cross-validation and plug-in methods are compared. In the real data analysis for case study, German credit data and heart disease data are used. We examine whether the nonparametric estimation for binary regression function is successful with the smoothing parameter using the above two approaches, and the performance is compared.
