  • We propose an efficient method of extracting targets within a region of interest in non-homogeneous infrared images by using a principal component analysis (PCA) plane and adaptive Gaussian kernel. Existing approaches for extracting targets have been limited to using only the intensity values of the pixels in a target region. However, it is difficult to extract the target regions effectively because the intensity values of the target region are mixed with the background intensity values. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel PCA based approach consisting of three steps. In the first step, we apply a PCA technique minimizing the total least-square errors of an IR image. In the second step, we generate a binary image that consists of pixels with higher values than the plane, and then calculate the second derivative of the sum of the square errors (SDSSE). In the final step, an iteration is performed until the convergence criteria is met, including the SDSSE, angle and labeling value. Therefore, a Gaussian kernel is weighted in addition to the PCA plane with the non-removed data from the previous step. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves better segmentation performance than the existing method.

  • In this paper, we propose a Fuzzy Cellular Neural Network(FCNN) that is based on a-Least Trimmed Square Hausdorff distance(a-LTSHD) which applies Hausdorff distance(HD) to the FCNN structure in order to remove the impulse noise of images effectively and also improve the speed of operation. FCNN incorporates Fuzzy set theory to Cellular Neural Network(CNN) structure and HD is used as a scale which computes the distance between set or two pixels in binary images without confrontation of the feature object. This method has been widely used with the adjustment of the object. For performance evaluation, our proposed method is analyzed in comparison with the conventional FCNN, with the Opening-Closing(OC) method, and the LTSHD based FCNN by using Mean Square Error(MSE) and Signal to Noise Ratio(SNR). As a result, the performance of our proposed network structure is found to be superior to the other algorithms in the removal of impulse noise.

  • A Hausdorff distance (HD) is one of commonly used measures for object matching. It calculates the distance between two point sets of edges in two-dimensional binary images without establishing correspondences. This paper proposes three object matching algorithm using robust HD measures based on M-estimation, least trimmed square (LTS), and .alpha.-trimmed mean methods, which are more efficient than the conventional HD measures. By computer simulation with synthetic and real images, the matching performance of the conventional HD smeasures and proposed' robust ones is compared.

  • In this paper, we propose a phase offset estimation algorithm which is based on turbo coded digital broadcasting system. The phase estimator is an estimator outside turbo code decoder using LMS (Least Mean Square) algorithm to estimate the phase of next state. While the conventional LMS algorithm with a fixed step size is easy implemented, it has weak points that are difficult the channel estimation and tracking in the multipath environment. To resolve this problem, we propose new phase offset estimation method with a variable step size LMS (VS-LMS). Additionally, we propose a scheme which consists of a conventional LMS. The performance is verified by computer simulation according to a fixed phase offset and a increased phase offset, the proposed algorithm improve the bit error rate performance than the conventional algorithm.

  • This paper describes a single-chip full-custom implementation of pipelined adaptive decision-feedback equalizer(PADFE) using a 0.25-${\mu}m$ CMOS technology for wide-band wireless digital communication systems. To enhance the throughput rate of ADFE, two pipeline stages are inserted into the critical path of the ADFE by using delayed least-mean-square(DLMS) algorithm. Redundant binary (RB) arithmetic is applied to all the data processing of the PADFE including filter taps and coefficient update blocks. When compared with conventional methods based on two's complement arithmetic, the proposed approach reduces arithmetic complexity, as well as results in a very simple complex-valued filter structure, thus suitable for VLSI implementation. The design parameters including pipeline stage, filter tap, coefficient and internal bit-width, and equalization performance such as bit error rate (BER) and convergence speed are analyzed by algorithm-level simulation using COSSAP. The single-chip PADFE contains about 205,000 transistors on an area of about $1.96\times1.35-mm^2$. Simulation results show that it can safely operate with 200-MHz clock frequency at 2.5-V supply, and its estimated power dissipation is about 890-mW. Test results show that the fabricated chip works functionally well.

  • Through time-series BV CCD photometry of the open cluster NGC 225 region, we have detected 30 variable stars including 22 new ones. They are five ${\delta}$ Scuti-type variable stars, a slowly pulsating B star, six eclipsing binary stars and 18 semi-long periodic or slow irregular variables, respectively. We have performed multiple-frequency analysis to determine pulsation frequencies of the ${\delta}$ Scuti-type stars and a slowly pulsating B star, using the discrete Fourier transform and linear least-square fitting methods. We also have derived the periods and amplitudes of 6 eclipsing binaries and a long-period variable star from the phase fitting method, and presented the light curves of all variable stars. A slowly pulsating B star is a member of NGC 225, but ${\delta}$ Scuti-type stars are not members from the positions in the color-magnitude diagram and the radial distancies from the center of the cluster. From Dias et al. (2014, A&A, 564, 79), only three variable stars including the slowly pulsating B star are members of clusters: two are in NGC 225 and one is in Stock 24. But a variable star in Stock 24 is not a member of the cluster because of its position of color-magnitude diagarm.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the relationship between sleep bruxism(SB) and pulpal calcifications in young women. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 female participants between 20 and 31 years of age who were referred to our radiology clinic for a dental check-up, including 59 SB and 41 non-SB patients, were sampled for the analysis. SB was diagnosed based on the American Academy of Sleep Medicine criteria. All teeth were evaluated on digital panoramic radiographs to detect pulpal calcifications, except third molars, teeth with root canal treatment, and teeth with root resorption. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to determine the risk factors for pulpal calcifications. The Spearman correlation coefficient was applied and the Pearson chi-square test was used for categorical variables. To test intra-examiner reproducibility, Cohen kappa analysis was applied. P values <.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: A total of 2800 teeth were evaluated (1652 teeth from SB patients and 1148 from non-SB patients), and 61% of patients had at least 1 dental pulpal calcification. No statistically significant relationship was found between SB and pulpal calcifications (P>0.05). In SB patients, the total number of pulpal calcifications was 129, while in non-SB patients, it was 84. Binary logistic analysis showed that SB was not a risk factor for the presence of pulpal calcifications(odds ratio, 1.19; 95% CI, 0.52-2.69, P>.05). Conclusion: No relationship was found between SB and pulpal calcifications.

  • In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for designing the R-G filter that has optimum performance in terms of mean square sidelobe level(MSSL) for the Barker code. The advantage of the conventional R-G filter lies in its simple structure so that it can be easily implemented. However, the conventional R-G filter dose not have optimum performances in terms of peak sidelobe level(PSL), mean sidelobe level(MSL), and MSSL. Recently, a(R-G)LP filter of which filter coefficients are obtained by the linear programming algorithm was proposed and known to have optimum performance in PSL. The proposed (R-G)LS filter keeps the simple structure of the conventional R-G filter and has the filter coefficients that minimizes the sidelobe in the least square sense. The analytic results show that the proposed (R-G)LS filter has better performances than the conventional R-G filter in terms of PSL, MSL, and MSSL. Compared with (R-G)LP filter, the proposed (R-G)LS filter has better performances in terms of MSL and MSSL. The proposed filter design algorithm can be applied to the other binary codes such as truncated pseudonoise(PN) codes and concatenated codes.

  • Many image hiding schemes based on least significant bit (LSB) transformation have been proposed. One of the LSB-based image hiding schemes that employs diamond encoding was proposed in 2008. In this scheme, the binary secret data is converted into base n representation, and the converted secret data is concealed in the cover image. Here, we show that this scheme has two vulnerabilities: noticeable spots in the stego-image, i.e., a non-smooth embedding result, and inefficiency caused by rough re-adjustment of falling-off-boundary value and impractical base translation. Moreover, we propose a new scheme that is efficient and produces a smooth and high quality embedding result by restricting n to power of 2 and using a sophisticated re-adjustment procedure. Our experimental results show that our scheme yields high quality stego-images and is secure against RS detection attack.

  • To investigate the equalizer performance in underwater acoustic communication m the presence of intersymbol interference (ISI) due to multipath, computer simulations are carried out in discrete multipath shallow water channels for three different horizontal ranges. For the purpose of computation simplicity, least mean square (LMS) algorithm is adopted both in linear equalizer and nonlinear equalizer, decision feedback equalizer (DFE) to cancel out ISI effects. Binary phase shift keying (BPSK) signals have been transmitted with high data rate of 2000bps through the use of equalization technique. The results demonstrate that equalization is an efficient way to achieve high transmission data rate in the shallow water channel.
