  • The rupture of the Achilles tendon is rather uncommon, but its incidence has been increasing. Main causes are usually due to direct injury or sudden indirect high energy trauma such as sports activity without predisposing disease. Spontaneous rupture of the Achilles tendon are sporadically reported especially from person who took steroid or with similiar predisposing disease. We experienced a patient with bilateral ruptures of the Achilles tendon that had occurred almost spontaneously, without any steroid related medication or underlying diseases.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method to convert a low-resolution depth map into its high-resolution one called distance transform-based bilateral upsampling. Since the proposed method controls the spatial domain weighting function based on distance transform values of the depth map, it increases the input depth map resolution while preserving edge sharpness. The proposed method is composed of three main steps: distance transform, spatial weighting control, and image interpolation. Experimental results show that our method outperforms the conventional bilateral upsampling in terms of the quality of output depth maps.

  • BSSRO (bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy) is frequently performed to correct dentofacial deformity and malocclusion. Among its complications the incidence of post-operative facial nerve palsy is very rare, but it is one of the most serious complications. The case of a 21-year-old male patient who underwent facial nerve palsy after BSSRO is described. After surgical intervention and conservative therapy, the patient recovered his facial nerve function successfully.

  • Transparency has been considered as a performance measure in bilateral teleoperation system. Therefore, many issues of transparency have been studied. This paper investigates the transparency in two-channel control architectures. At first, we show the feasibility using analytic transparency-conditions and present the two classes of two-channel control architecture, which are perfectly transparent under ideal situation. In addition, remedies to problems due to impedance model estimation errors under real situation are introduced. They are as fellows; design guideline of control parameters to reduce the effect of model estimation error effect and introduction of time delay estimation for unknown dynamics. From these analyses, the systematic control scheme, which is stable and well transparent under real implementation, is proposed in two-channel control architecture. Finally, the proposed scheme is applied to a 2 D.O.F master-slave system and the experimental results show the validity of the theoretical work.

  • Page kidney refers to the phenomenon of hypertension secondary to long-standing compression of renal parenchyma caused by renal subcapsular collection. The most common cause of renal subcapsular collection is a hematoma which usually occurs after a history of blunt trauma. A 42-year-old female patient who received botulinum toxin injection in her back during chiropractic care was admitted to the emergency room with sudden bilateral flank pain and hypertension. The computed tomography (CT) images demonstrated the presence of bilateral subcapsular renal hematoma. The patient was treated conservatively and recovered well. The follow up CT images showed markedly resolved bilateral hematoma.

  • Congenital deficiency of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a rare disorder that has been reported in association with other knee dysplasia like as congenital knee dislocation. congenital short femur, congenital absence of menisci, congenital ring meniscus, and thrombocytopenia-absent radius syndrome. There has been no published explanation about the etiology of bilaeral ACL deficiencies without other abnomality. The patient of congenital ACL deficiency must be carefully inspected about combined anomaly. Those efforts may be helful in treatment or ACL deficient patients and evaluation of pathophysiology or ACL deficiency. However there has not been a ruptured congenital deficiency of the ACL without other dysplasia or the knee and other congenital skeletal abnomalities. We reported a case of symptomatic bilateral congenital deficiencies of the ACL which have not been associated with other skeletal abnormalities.

  • Put ($$^*$$) $$G[x,y]={\sum}\limits^{p+q=n}_{p,q=0}[-n]_{p+q}c_{p,q}x^py^q$$, where $[{\lambda}]_m$ is the Pocbhammer symbol and the $c_{p,q}$ are arbitrary constants. Making use of the specialized forms of some of his earlier results (see [8] and [9] the author derives here bilateral generating functions of the type ($$^{**}$$) $${\sum}\limits^{\infty}_{n=0}{\frac{[\lambda]_n}{n!}}_2F_1[\array{{\rho}-n,\;{\alpha};\\{\lambda}+{\rho};}x]\;G[y,z]t^n$$ where ${\alpha}$, ${\rho}$ and ${\lambda}$ are arbitrary complex numbers. In particular, it is shown that when G[y, z] is a double hypergeometric polynomial, the right-band member of ($^{**}$) belongs to a class of general triple hypergeometric functions introduced by the author [7]. An interesting special case of ($^{**}$) when ${\rho}=-m,\;m$ being a nonnegative integer, yields a class of bilateral generating functions for the Jacobi polynomials $\{P_n{^{{\alpha},{\beta}}}(x)\}$ in the form ($$^{***}$$) $${\sum\limits^{\infty}_{n=0}}\(\array{m+n\\n}\)P{^{({\alpha}-n,{\beta}-n)}_{m+n}(x)\;G[y,z]{\frac{t^n}{n!}}$$, which provides a unification of several known results. Further extensions of ($^{**}$) and ($^{***}$) with G[y, z] replaced by an analogous multiple sum $H\[y_1,{\cdots},y_m\]$ are also discussed.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to identify any differential point in computerized tomographic[CT] findings between aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage[ASAH] and traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage[TSAH], which sometimes make us not confident in differentiation. Methods : CT of 142 ASAH and 82 TSAH patients over the last 2 years were retrospectively reviewed. We evaluated the thickness of SAH, the laterality of sylvian cisternal hemorrhage, the location, the number of involved cisterns, and the associated other lesions between two types of SAH. Results : Suprasellar cisterns and sylvian cisterns were most prominently and frequently involved cisterns in ASAH but cortical sulci and sylvian cisterns were most frequently involved in TSAH. Intraventricular and intracerebral hemorrhage were frequently seen in ASAH. Thickness of SAH over 1mm, bilateral sylvian SAH, multiple cisternal SAH were in favor of ASAH. The number of involved cisterns were more frequently seen in ASAH than in TSAH. In ASAH, bilateral sylvian hemorrhages were more frequently seen than in TSAH. Skull fracture, subdural hematoma, subgaleal hematoma, and hemorrhagic contusion were frequently associated with TSAH. Conclusion : As a result of our study, the authors conclude that when IVH, hydrocephalus, thick SAH > 1mm bilateral sylvian SAH, and multiple cisternal SAH are seen in CT, immediate angiography should be performed to rule out cerebral aneurysms whether associated with other traumatic lesions or not.

  • We report a very rare case of cervical compressive myelopathy by an anomalous bilateral vertebral artery (VA) entering the spinal canal at the C1 level and compressing the spinal cord. A 70-year-old woman had been suffering from progressive gait disturbance. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed that a bilateral VA at the V4 segment had abnormal courses and caused compression to the high cervical cord. VA repositioning was performed by anchoring a suture between the artery and around the arachnoid membrane and dentate ligament, and then, microvascular decompression using a Teflon sponge was done between the VA and the spinal cord. The weakness in the patient improved in the lower extremity after the operation. Anomalous VA could be one of the rare causes of cervical compressive myelopathy. Additionally, an anchoring suture and microvascular decompression around the VA could be a sufficient and safe method to indirectly decompress the spinal canal.
