  • A routing strategy based on traffic prediction and dynamic cache allocation for satellite nodes is proposed to address the issues of high propagation delay and overall delay of inter-satellite and satellite-to-ground links in low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite systems. The spatial and temporal correlations of satellite network traffic were analyzed, and the relevant traffic through the target satellite was extracted as raw input for traffic prediction. An improved gradient boosting regression tree algorithm was used for traffic prediction. Based on the traffic prediction results, a dynamic cache allocation routing strategy is proposed. The satellite nodes periodically monitor the traffic load on inter-satellite links (ISLs) and dynamically allocate cache resources for each ISL with neighboring nodes. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed routing strategy effectively reduces packet loss rate and average end-to-end delay and improves the distribution of services across the entire network.

  • Road movement pollutant air environment big data is a link between real-time traffic data such as vehicle type, speed, and load using AVC, VDS, WIM, and DTG, which are always traffic volume survey equipment, and road shape (uphill, downhill, turning section) data using GIS. It consists of traffic flow data. Also, unlike general data, a lot of data per unit time is generated and has various formats. In particular, since about 7.4 million cases/hour or more of large-scale real-time data collected as detailed traffic flow information are collected, stored and processed, a system that can efficiently process data is required. Therefore, in this study, an open source-based data parallel processing performance optimization study is conducted for the visualization of big data in the air environment of road transport pollution.

  • The number of traffic accidents caused by wet or icy road surface conditions is on the rise every year. Car crashes in such bad road conditions can increase fatalities and serious injuries. Historical data (from the year 2016 to the year 2020) on weather-related traffic accidents show that the fatality rates are fairly high in Korea. This requires accurate prediction and identification of hazardous road conditions. In this study, a forecasting model is developed to predict the chances of traffic accidents that can occur on roads affected by weather and road surface conditions. Multiple deep learning algorithms taking into account AlexNet and 2D-CNN are employed. Data on orthophoto images, automatic weather systems, automated synoptic observing systems, and road surfaces are used for training and testing purposes. The orthophotos images are pre-processed before using them as input data for the modeling process. The procedure involves image segmentation techniques as well as the Z-Curve index. Results indicate that there is an acceptable performance of prediction such as 65% for dry, 46% for moist, and 33% for wet road conditions. The overall accuracy of the model is 53%. The findings of the study may contribute to developing comprehensive measures for enhancing road safety.

  • As interest in traffic safety increases, research on autonomous driving, which reduces the incidence of traffic accidents, is increased. Object recognition and detection are essential for autonomous driving. Therefore, research on object recognition and detection through traffic image big data is being actively conducted to determine the road conditions. However, because most existing studies use only daytime data, it is difficult to recognize objects on night roads. Particularly, in the case of a light source object, it is difficult to use the features of the daytime as it is due to light smudging and whitening. Therefore, this study proposes Yolo based light source object detection for traffic image big data processing. The proposed method performs image processing by applying color model transitions to night traffic image. The object group is determined by extracting the characteristics of the object through image processing. It is possible to increase the recognition rate of light source object detection on a night road through a deep learning model using candidate group data.

  • This study investigates the effect of real-time traffic information on the traffic flows in Korea. Recently, the development of smartphones has made it easier to use the route guidance service based on real-time traffic information. By the Big Data analysis in the study, it was found that the number of postings on the web community sites increased sharply in 2010 and 2011 when the smartphones spread widely. In the analysis of the traffic speeds by time, the average traffic speeds for morning and evening rush hours on weekdays from 2009 to 2014 of the 142 sections in the 6 national highways in Gyeonggi-do, Korea were used. From the results of the analysis, it was found that the percentage of the number of sections with the improved traffic flows increased greatly in 2012 compared to 2011. The findings of the study indicate the effect of the real-time traffic information on improving traffic flows.

  • The traffic accident reports that are generated by the Traffic Broadcasting Networks(TBN) are unstructured data. It, however, has the value as some sort of real-time traffic information generated by the viewpoint of the drives and/or pedestrians that were on the roads, the time and spots, not the offender or the victim who caused the traffic accidents. However, the traffic accident reports, which are big data, were not applied to traffic accident analysis and traffic related research commonly. This study adopting text-mining technique was able to provide a clue for utilizing it for the impacts of traffic accidents. Seven years of traffic reports were grasped by this analysis. By analyzing the reports, it was possible to identify the road names, accident spot names, time, and to identify factors that have the greatest influence on other drivers due to traffic accidents. Authors plan to combine unstructured accident data with traffic reports for further study.

  • The research aims to find implications of machine learning and urban big data as a way to construct the flexible transportation network system of smart city by responding the urban context changes. This research deals with a problem that existing a bus headway model is difficult to respond urban situations in real-time. Therefore, utilizing the urban big data and machine learning prototyping tool in weathers, traffics, and bus statues, this research presents a flexible headway model to predict bus delay and analyze the result. The prototyping model is composed by real-time data of buses. The data is gathered through public data portals and real time Application Program Interface (API) by the government. These data are fundamental resources to organize interval pattern models of bus operations as traffic environment factors (road speeds, station conditions, weathers, and bus information of operating in real-time). The prototyping model is implemented by the machine learning tool (RapidMiner Studio) and conducted several tests for bus delays prediction according to specific circumstances. As a result, possibilities of transportation system are discussed for promoting the urban efficiency and the citizens' convenience by responding to urban conditions.

  • In motorway traffic flow control, the conventional way based on real-time response has been changed into advanced way based on proactive response. Future traffic conditions over multiple time intervals are crucial input data for advanced motorway traffic flow control. It is necessary to overcome the uncertainty of the future state in order for forecasting multiple-period traffic volumes, as the number of uncertainty concurrently increase when the forecasting horizon expands. In this vein, multi-interval forecasting of traffic volumes requires a viable approach to conquer future uncertainties successfully. In this paper, a forecasting model is proposed which effectively addresses the uncertainties of future state based on the behaviors of temporal evolution of traffic volume states that intrinsically exits in the big past data. The model selects the past states from the big past data based on the state evolution of current traffic volumes, and then the selected past states are employed for estimating future states. The model was also designed to be suitable for data management systems in practice. Test results demonstrated that the model can effectively overcome the uncertainties over multiple time periods and can generate very reliable predictions in term of prediction accuracy. Hence, it is indicated that the model can be mounted and utilized on advanced data management systems.

  • Big data information and pattern analysis have applications in many industrial sectors. To reduce energy consumption effectively, the eco-driving method that reduces the fuel consumption of vehicles has recently come under scrutiny. Using big data on commercial vehicles obtained from digital tachographs (DTGs), it is possible not only to aid traffic safety but also improve eco-driving. In this study, we estimate fuel consumption efficiency by processing and analyzing DTG big data for commercial vehicles using parallel processing with the MapReduce mechanism. Compared to the conventional measurement of fuel consumption using the On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD-II) device, in this paper, we use actual DTG data and OBD-II fuel consumption data to identify meaningful relationships to calculate fuel efficiency rates. Based on the driving pattern extracted from DTG data, estimating fuel consumption is possible by analyzing driving patterns obtained only from DTG big data.
