A modified Mukerjee's model considering the microstructural evolution was developed to study the superplastic bulge forming process of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Through the microstructual observation after deformation, it was found that the grain growth rate of uniaxially tested specimens was different from that of biaxially deformed specimens. From this result, bulge forming experiments with and without back pressure were performed to examine the grain growth behavior and to compare the results of biaxial test with those of triaxial test. Good agreement between the prediction by a modified Mukerjee's model and the experimental measurements was obtained for bulge profile and thickness distribution.
In recent years, there has been a considerable interest in the application of super plastic forming in the aircraft and automotive industries. This requires a detailed design of the technological process in order to exploit its peculiar potentialities better. Nowadays, the finite element method is used to plan the sheet metal forming processes whose simulation requires determination of material constants for super plastic materials. The present work is aimed to show a simple method to characterize super plastic materials duplex stainless steel which was formed by a constant gaspressure to hemispheres with and without back pressure. The forming operation was performed using an in-house designed and built biaxial forming apparatus. The temporal change of dome heights of hemispheres were measured for applying the pressures. The flow stresses and strain rates developed at the top of the dome during the forming step were shown to follow closely the flow stress - strain rate relationship obtained from the strain rate change tests performed at the same temperature.
Recently the use of ferritic stainless steels for automotive exhaust system has been increased dramatically. A detailed knowledge of material behavior of ferritic stainless steel is important for successful manufacturing of exhaust systems. To achieve this goal, numerical study of square cup deep drawing for ferritic stainless steel sheet, type 409L was conducted with Yld2000-24. Uniaxial tensile test and hydraulic bulge test were performed to characterize plastic material behavior. Finite element simulation of square cup deep drawing was performed successfully.
The modified yield function of Gologanu-Leblond-Devaux in conjunction with the Barlat and Lian's yield criterion is studied to clarify the plastic deformation characteristic of voided anisotropic sheet metals. The void growth of an anisotropic sheet under biaxial tensile loading and damage effect of void growth on forming limits of sheet metals are investigated. Also, the shape parameter defining non-spherical(prolate ellipsoidal) voids with initially random orientations is introduced in M-K model. The predicted forming limits are compared with the published experimental data.
Although the bulge forming technique is currently employed in commercial superplastic forming processes, the uniaxial tensile test is still the most commonly used method for the evaluation of the superplasticity of materials due to its simplicity in testing. However, the results obtained from the uniaxial tensile test can not be applied in analyzing the characteristics of the real parts formed in multi-axial stress state. In this paper, using the tensile test specimen obtained from the square cup manufactured by superplastic forming, tensile strength and elongation have been investigated according to the strain and cavity volume fraction. From the result of experiment, tensile strength and elongation are decreased according to the strain and cavity in Al-6%Cu-0.4%Zr alloy. On condition of uniaxial stress, cavity volume fraction is increased on linear according to the increasement of thickness strain. However, on condition of biaxial stress there are critical point( E t=1.5-1.6) that the slope, the ratio of cavity volume fraction and strain, have been changed. Therefore, cavity volume fraction is different with respect to stress condition, although the same strain.
The inner-structure bonded(ISB) sheet metal is defined as a composite sheet metal which has middle layer of truss-structure between two skin sheets. The characteristics such as ultra-light weight, high rigidity, high strength, etc are required especially for automobile parts. The characteristic of ISB sheet metal depends on inner-structure pattern or method of bonding. Pyramid type of crimped expanded metal is used for inner-structure and both of resistance welding and adhesive bonding are applied to make a specimen. As a result of compression test, it is appeared that forming limit is 10% reduction in thickness under a load of 8kgf per unit element(one inner-structure). In case of uniaxial tensile test the non-uniform surface integrity rather than the buckling of inner-structure happened at a load of 450kgf, which indicates elongation of 7.2% and thickness reduction of 13%. The eye-inspection method was applied to examine the defects occurring on the specimen during stretch forming. In case of biaxial stretch forming only the non-uniform deformation on the surface of a skin sheet could be observed. The forming limit in stretching of ISB sheet metal with the hemi-spherical punch of 150mm in diameter was 3mm in forming depth and 5% reduction in thickness.
Superplastic formability depends on flow parameters such as temperature, strain rate, strain and stress, microstructures. Usually, superplastic properties of materials are characterized with using a uni-axial tension testing. However, superplastic sheet is formed under mutiaxial loading condition in most forming practices. In the present study, superplastic characteristics of A15083 alloys were determined with using both a uni-axial and biaxial bulging tests. Specially, cone-type die was used to achieve constant strain rate under constant pressure condition. Even though constant strain rate under a certain pressure was achieved only approximately, a cone-type bulging test was found to be quite beneficial to get a multiaxial formability of superplastic materials.
A wrinkling is the instability phenomenon influenced by material properties, shape geometry, forming conditions, stress state, etc. The wrinkling is considered as a critical defect in appearance of product. Many wrinkling prediction methods using thickness strain distribution and farming analysis have been proposed. The wrinkling, however, is not easily predicted precisely by these methods. In this study, the region in the biaxial plane stress state is modeled with a rectangular plate introducing the effective dimension, and critical stress values for the wrinkling are calculated. Prediction index for the wrinkling is then evaluated by normalizing the actual stress with respect to the critical stress. In order to show the validity and efficiency of the method proposed, the wrinkling prediction for a squared sheet in the uniaxial tensile stress and auto-body front finder panel is performed.
Many laboratory experiments on crack propagation under uniaxial loading and biaxial loading have been conducted in the past using transparent materials such as resin, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), etc. However, propagation behaviors of three-dimensional (3D) cracks in rock or rock-like materials under tri-axial loading are often considerably different. In this study, a series of true tri-axial loading tests on the rock-like material with two semi-ellipse pre-existing cracks were performed in laboratory to investigate the acoustic emission (AE) characteristics and propagation characteristics of 3D crack groups influenced by intermediate principal stress. Compared with previous experiments under uniaxial loading and biaxial loading, the tests under true tri-axial loading showed that shear cracks, anti-wing cracks and secondary cracks were the main failure mechanisms, and the initiation and propagation of tensile cracks were limited. Shear cracks propagated in the direction parallel to pre-existing crack plane. With the increase of intermediate principal stress, the critical stress of crack initiation increased gradually, and secondary shear cracks may no longer coalesce in the rock bridge. Crack aperture decreased with the increase of intermediate principal stress, and the failure is dominated by shear fracturing. There are two stages of fracture development: stable propagation stage and unstable failure stage. The AE events occurred in a zone parallel to pre-existing crack plane, and the AE zone increased gradually with the increase of intermediate principal stress, eventually forming obvious shear rupture planes. This shows that shear cracks initiated and propagated in the pre-existing crack direction, forming a shear rupture plane inside the specimens. The paths of fracturing inside the specimens were observed using the Computerized Tomography (CT) scanning and reconstruction.
Climate changes brought on by human interventions have proved to be more devastating than predicted during the recent decades. Recognition of seriousness of the situation has led regulatory organisations to impose strict targets on allowable carbon dioxide emissions from automotive vehicles. As a possible solution, it has been proposed that Fibre Metal Laminate (FML) system is used to reduce the weight of future vehicles. To facilitate this investigation, FML based on steel and self-reinforced polypropylene was stamp formed into dome shapes under different blank holder forces (BHFs) at room temperature and its forming behaviour analysed. An open-die configuration was used in a hydraulic press so that a 3D photogrammetric measurement system (ARAMIS) could capture real-time surface strains. This paper presents findings on strain evolutions at different points along and at $45^{\circ}$ to fibre directions of circular FML blank, through various stages of forming. It was found initiation and rate of deformation varied with distance from the pole, that the mode of deformations range from biaxial stretching at the pole to drawing towards flange region, at decreasing magnitudes away from the pole in general. More uniform strain distribution was observed for the FML compared to that of plain steel and the most significant effects of BHF were its influence on forming depth and level of strain reached before failure.
