Two iterative solvers are applied to solve the modified mild slope equation. The elliptic formulation of the governing equation is selected for numerical treatment because it is partly suited for complex wave fields, like those encountered inside harbors. The requirement that the computational model should be capable of dealing with a large problem domain is addressed by implementing and testing two iterative solvers, which are based on the Stabilized Bi-Conjugate Gradient Method (BiCGSTAB) and Generalized Conjugate Gradient Method (GCGM). The characteristics of the solvers are compared, using the results for Berkhoff's shoal test, used widely as a benchmark in coastal modeling. It is shown that the GCGM algorithm has a better convergence rate than BiCGSTAB, and preconditioning of these algorithms gives more than half a reduction of computational cost.
We are concerned with mathematical analysis related to the bi-pointwise control for a mixed type of wave equation. In particular, we are interested in the systematic build-up of the bi-pointwise control actuators;one at the boundary and the other at the interior point simultaneously. The main purpose is to examine Hilbert Uniqueness Method for the setting of bi-pointwise control actuators and to establish relevant algorithm based on our analysis. After discussing the weak solution for the state equation, we investigate bi-pointwise control mechanism and relevant mathematical analysis based on HUM. We then proceed to set up an algorithm based on the conjugate gradient method to establish bi-pointwise control actuators to halt the system.

A numerical method on multi-block technique by Bi-CGSTAB(Bi-Conjugate Gradient STABilized) solver has been proposed. The present multi-block technique can reduce the numerical manipulation greatly because the common regions at the interface of each block are not necessary. In order to test the computational performance of present multi-block technique, the flow characteristics in a T type duct system and a N type duct system have been investigated by three kinds of methods such as the single-block method, the previous multi-block technique and the multi-block technique with Bi-CGSTAB solver. The results indicated that the required CPU time by present multi block technique was shorter than that of other two numerical methods and the convergency history was shown very stable at the present multi-block technique.

A parallel algorithm of bi-conjugate gradient method was developed based on CUDA for parallel computation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The governing equations were discretized using splitting P2P1 finite element method. Asymmetric stenotic flow problem was solved to validate the proposed algorithm, and then the parallel performance of the GPU was examined by measuring the elapsed times. Further, the GPU performance for sparse matrix-vector multiplication was also investigated with a matrix of fluid-structure interaction problem. A kernel was generated to simultaneously compute the inner product of each row of sparse matrix and a vector. In addition, the kernel was optimized to improve the performance by using both parallel reduction and memory coalescing. In the kernel construction, the effect of warp on the parallel performance of the present CUDA was also examined. The present GPU computation was more than 7 times faster than the single CPU by double precision.

We present a parallel bi-conjugate gradient (Bi-CG) matrix solver for large scale Bio-FET simulations based on recent graphics processing units (GPUs) which can realize a large-scale parallel processing with very low cost. The proposed method is focused on solving the Poisson equation in a parallel way, which requires massive computational resources in not only semiconductor simulation, but also other various fields including computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer simulations. As a result, our solver is around 30 times faster than those with traditional methods based on single core CPU systems in solving the Possion equation in a 3D FDM (Finite Difference Method) scheme. The proposed method is implemented and tested based on NVIDIA's CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) environment which enables general purpose parallel processing in GPUs. Unlike other similar GPU-based approaches which apply usually 32-bit single-precision floating point arithmetics, we use 64-bit double-precision operations for better convergence. Applications on the CUDA platform are rather easy to implement but very hard to get optimized performances. In this regard, we also discuss the optimization strategy of the proposed method.
In this study, a parallel performance of CUPID-code has been investigated for both Ethernet and Infiniband network system to examine the effect of cache memory and network-speed. Bi-conjugate gradient solver of CUPID-code has been parallelised by using domain decomposition method and message passing interface (MPI). It is shown that the parallel performance of Ethernet-network system is worse than that of Infiniband-network system due to the slow network-speed and a small cache memory. It is also found that the parallel performance of each system deteriorates for a small problem due to the communication overhead, but the performance of Infiniband-network system is better than Ethernet-network system due to a much faster network-speed. For a large problem, the parallel performance depends less on network system.

The main goal of this work is to develop a numerical simulator to study an isothermal single-phase two-component flow in a naturally fractured oil reservoir, taking into account advection and diffusion effects. We use the Peng-Robinson equation of state with a volume translation to evaluate the properties of the components, and the discretization of the governing partial differential equations is carried out using the Finite Difference Method, along with implicit and first-order upwind schemes. This process leads to a coupled non-linear algebraic system for the unknowns pressure and molar fractions. After a linearization and the use of an operator splitting, the Conjugate Gradient and Bi-conjugated Gradient Stabilized methods are then used to solve two algebraic subsystems, one for the pressure and another for the molar fraction. We studied the effects of fractures in both the flow field and mass transport, as well as in computing time, and the results show that the fractures affect, as expected, the flow creating a thin preferential path for the mass transport.
An efficient two-level domain decomposition parallel algorithm is suggested to solve large-DOF structural problems with nonlinear material models generating unsymmetric tangent matrices, such as a group of plastic-damage material models. The parallel version of the stabilized bi-conjugate gradient method is developed to solve unsymmetric coarse problems iteratively. In the present approach the coarse DOF system is solved parallelly on each processor rather than the whole system equation to minimize the data communication between processors, which is appropriate to maintain the computing performance on a non-supercomputer level cluster system. The performance test results show that the suggested algorithm provides scalability on computing performance and an efficient approach to solve large-DOF nonlinear structural problems on a cluster system.
A three-dimensional numerical model called NEWTANK is employed to investigate solitary wave run-up with an internal wave-maker on a steep slope. The numerical model solves the spatially averaged Navier-Stokes equations for two-phase flows. The LES (large-eddy-simulation) approach is adopted to model the turbulence effect by using the Smagorinsky SGS (sub-grid scale) closure model. A two-step projection method is adopted in numerical solutions, aided by the Bi-CGSTAB (Bi-Conjugate Gradient Stabilized) method to solve the pressure Poisson equation for the filtered pressure field. The second-order accurate VOF (volume-of-fluid) method is used to track the distorted and broken free surface. A solitary wave is first internally generated and propagated over a constant water depth in the three-dimensional domain. Numerically predicted results are compared with analytical solutions and numerical errors are analyzed in detail. The model is then applied to study solitary wave run-up on a steep slope and the obtained results are compared with available laboratory measurements.

Three-dimensional (3-D) electromagnetic (EM) modeling algorithm has been developed using finite element method (FEM) to acquire more efficient interpretation techniques of EM data. When FEM based on nodal elements is applied to EM problem, spurious solutions, so called 'vector parasite', are occurred due to the discontinuity of normal electric fields and may lead the completely erroneous results. Among the methods curing the spurious problem, this study adopts vector element of which basis function has the amplitude and direction. To reduce computational cost and required core memory, complex bi-conjugate gradient (CBCG) method is applied to solving complex symmetric matrix of FEM and point Jacobi method is used to accelerate convergence rate. To verify the developed 3-D EM modeling algorithm, its electric and magnetic field for a layered-earth model are compared with those of layered-earth solution. As we expected, the vector based FEM developed in this study does not cause ny vector parasite problem, while conventional nodal based FEM causes lots of errors due to the discontinuity of field variables. For testing the applicability to high frequencies 100 MHz is used as an operating frequency for the layer structure. Modeled fields calculated from developed code are also well matched with the layered-earth ones for a model with dielectric anomaly as well as conductive anomaly. In a vertical electric dipole source case, however, the discontinuity of field variables causes the conventional nodal based FEM to include a lot of errors due to the vector parasite. Even for the case, the vector based FEM gave almost the same results as the layered-earth solution. The magnetic fields induced by a dielectric anomaly at high frequencies show unique behaviors different from those by a conductive anomaly. Since our 3-D EM modeling code can reflect the effect from a dielectric anomaly as well as a conductive anomaly, it may be a groundwork not only to apply high frequency EM method to the field survey but also to analyze the fold data obtained by high frequency EM method.
