  • The effects of joining process such as contact method, shape of joined area and pressure on the properties of Bi-2223 superconducting tape have been optimized. In the process tapes were etched to expose the superconductor core in the shape of 'ㅁ' and 'ㄷ'. The exposed cores of the two tapes were brought into contact, uniaxially pressed and sintered. Subsequently, the current capacity of the joined tape was measured as a function of uniaxial pressure. It was observed that the current capacity was significantly dependent on uniaxial pressure. The joined tape, fabricated with a pressure of 1,600 MPa, showed the highest value of current capacity(90%) of highest value of current capacity is resulted from improvements in core density, contacting area and grain alignment, etc. In addition the effect of processing variables on microstructural evolution and mechanical property of joined tape will be presented.

  • Considering the application of high temperature superconductor to MRI, the loss at conductor joint would be very important. Therefore, we have carried out a measurement of joint resistance of Bi-2223/Ag tapes at 77 K. A pancake coil was wound by Bi-2223/Ag tape. Both ends the tape were overlapped and soldered to each other. The DC current is induced in the pancake coil by energizing the excitation coil wound by copper wire closely located to the pancake coil. The decay behaviour of the current in coils was clearly separated in two regimes, and initial fast decay of the order of minutes followed by a slow logarithmic-like decay, From this data, the resistance of the joint was evaluated as 2.74 n$\Omega$.

  • There are many problems in wire fabrication of long length Bi-2223 superconductor by using conventional extrusion method. They are mainly due to high surface resistance and inhomogeneous distribution of inner stress. Hydrostatic extrusion process will not only decrease the extrusion pressure but also enhance homogeneous deformation of material by reducing friction force between billet and container Hydrostatic extrusion method is considered to be useful fur fabrication of the homogeneous wire with high density. In this paper, hydrostatic extrusion process is introduced to fabricate Bi-2223 superconducting tape, and also discussed are the interface homogeneity and microstructural aspects of extruded BSCCO/Ag billet.

  • In order to investigate 95% retained critical current of Bi-2223/Ag tapes under various stress-strain conditions, load cell attached tension and bending apparatus was used. The critical current of stress-strained tape was degraded below 95% retained critical current when tension and bending was simultaneously applied together. But only one of this tension or bending did not degrade the tape below 95% retained critical current. Deformation temperature was important to maintain the 95% retained Ic of Bi-2223/Ag tapes after bending or tension deformation because mechanical strength of tapes can be changed drastically between room temperature and 77 K.

  • A Bi-2223 tape has been developed for power applications such as power cables or transformers working at liquid nitrogen temperature. For such applications it is required to understand fault current characteristics of the Bi-2223 tape. In this paper, we report fault current characteristics using two types of samples, straight sample and pancake coil sample. It was found that the fault current characteristics of the Bi-2223 tape are depend on electrical insulations and fault durations strongly. Also it was shown that the fault current characteristics in the insulated straight sample are similar to those in the pancake sample with a conductor insulation. Finally, it was shown that the pancake sample with a layer insulation has better characteristics than that with a conductor insulation for fault currents.

  • Using Ag sheathed multi filamentary Bi-2223 tape, stability against heat pulse has been investigated. The measured normal zone propagation(NZP) velocity of the tape was found to be faster due to increase of operating current and magnetic field, and agree well with calculated data from one dimensional heat balance equation. Minimum quench energy(MQE) was found to be larger than 17 J at 30 K zero magnetic filed at operating current of 96.5 with respect to I$_c$.

  • Magnetization losses of a Bi-2223 tape in magnetic fields parallel to the tape surface were measured by a room temperature cancellation and a cryogenic temperature cancellation. The results indicate that the same loss data are observed for both methods. The magnetization losses are hysteretic because the measured losses agree well with calculated ones based on a critical state model. In the full field penetration cases the magnetization losses increase with the frequency but in the partial field penetration cases the influence of the frequency is opposite.

  • Superconducting tape is being developed for electrical equipment such as superconducting transformers and generators etc. AC loss reduction is primary concerned in the development of such high-efficiency equipment. AC losses in Bi-2223 silver-sheathed tapes, both single and multi-filamentary, were investigated by means of AC magnetization techniques when longitudinal fields are applied. The experiment resultswere compared with the hysteresis loss equation based on Bean model and the eddy current loss equation. The AC loss of the mono-filamentary tape was dominated by the hysteresis. On the contrary, the AC loss of the multi-filamentary tape was substantially dominated by the eddy current loss in the silver matrix.

  • The effect of twisting on the microstructure and AC losses of Bi-2223 superconductor tape has been evaluated. Twisting pitches of the tapes are in the range of 12~60 mm and uniformly deformed. The critical current of the tapes was measured to decreased with decreased pitch. This reduction is believed to be due to the irregular interface, poor grain alignment. In addition, AC losses of the tape reduced as the pitch decreased probably due to combined effects of lower critical current and electrically decoupled filament of twisted tape.
